Garfield Heights D-3 District Rankings (Off-Season #1)

These initial off-season rankings will have the wrestlers ranked at the weights that they competed at last season. I’ll start moving wrestlers around as the off-season progresses, but for now, everyone is listed at last year’s weight.

The team rankings are also based off of the returning wrestlers and do not yet include the incoming freshmen.
I paired the freshmen with the school that they were listed at on the Yappi thread about middle school state placers. If there was more than one possible school listed, I took a guess.
If there are any freshmen listed at the wrong school, feel free to let me know. Also, if there are any other wrestlers who have transferred, decided not to wrestle next year, or graduated (but I mistakenly left them in the rankings), please let me know.

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

* = unsure about participation or availability

# = A second wrestler from the same school ranked at the same weight. I will add an extra wrestler to the rankings at each weight that contains a #.

1. Brett Szuhay- Crestwood (8th state)
2. Michael Prikryl- Rootstown (SQ)
3. Dylan Martin- (W.S.) Northwestern (SQ)
4. Brandt Virden- Columbiana (5th district)
5. Deagan Foster- Waterloo
6. Daniel Demma- Garfield
7. Joey Bond- Newbury (6th district)
8. Jarrison Moore- Norwayne

Incoming Freshmen:
Nolan Frye- Cuyahoga Hts (2nd middle school state)
Patrick Reineke- Hawken (2nd middle school state)

Hopefully, these wrestlers spread out in weight over the off-season. 1, 2, 4, and 5 were all at the same sectional last year, which also included returning state placer Boot Kuhlins.

1. Caleb Edwards- Rootstown (3rd state)
2. Jacob Edelman- Pymatuning Valley (SQ)
3. Jackson Reineke- Hawken (SQ)
4. Kyle Keenan- South Range (SQ)
5. Gabe Mathias- Waynedale (5th district)
6. Trevor Meeker- Grand Valley (6th district)
7. Dominic Savoca- Crestwood
8. Zach Lahood- Black River (6th district 2017)

Incoming Freshman:
Jeremiah McKee- Wellington (8th middle school state)

I was pleasantly surprised by Edwards at the state tournament last season, placing 3rd as a freshman after knocking off 2x state placer Ray Adams in the consolation finals to avenge an earlier loss.

1. Jake White- Manchester (8th state)
2. Robert Pinkie- Lutheran West (SQ 2017)
3. Konnor Duncan- Kirtland (SQ)
4. Storm Stanley- Waynedale (SQ)
5. Blake Rising- Mapleton (6th district)
6. Andrew Kollin- Rittman
7. Reggie Bouchonville- Oberlin
8. Lachlan Thomas- Lutheran W.#
9. Andrew Wenzel- Tuslaw

Incoming Freshmen:
Jacob McHood- Mogadore (4th middle school state)
Tate Geiser- Dalton (8th middle school state)

Duncan started the year up at 132 before gradually making the cut to 120 with ever improving results. His efforts culminated in an 8-1 win over Stanley in the district semis, earning him his first trip to the state tournament.

1. Zach Larue- Manchester (4th, 6th, 6th state)
2. Seth Majewski- Brooklyn (SQ)
3. Jamie Viront- Tuslaw (SQ)
4. Michael Kucera- Independence (SQ)
5. Noah Campbell- Pymatuning Valley (6th district 2017)
6. Austin Shepherd- Norwayne (5th district)
7. Cory Stiffler- Orrville (6th district)
8. Austin Partlow- Mogadore

Larue will have a serious shot at a state finals appearance this season after placing at state in each of his first 3 years. His only losses at state last season were to 3x state champ Hoskins by 1 and 3 points. He defeated the wrestlers who finished 5th, 6th, and 7th, all by 5 points or more.

1. Niko Chilson- Rootstown (5th, 5th state)
2. Parker Watson- Lutheran W. (4th state)
3. Cael Rowland- (W.S.) Northwestern (8th state)
4. Nick Cianciola- Canton C.C. (6th district, SQ 2017)
5. Kollen Butler- Orrville
6. Maison Martell- Smithville
7. Trey Wonner- (Columbiana) Crestview
8. Ryan Staton- Jackson-Milton

Incoming Freshman:
Maxwell Kirby- Fairless (3rd middle school state)

This weight returns 3 state placers from the previous season. It’ll be interesting to see if everyone bumps or cuts weight to stay away from 3x state champ D’Emilio. We could potentially see the top 3 at this weight joins state champ Burgard at 145 if D’Emilio goes 138. Nationally ranked state champ Mattin could wind up at 132, which could further incentivize the move to 145.

1. Nick Burgard- (Ashtabula) St. John (1st state)
2. Brier Marthey- Tuslaw (SQ)
3. Trent Duvall- Rootstown (5th district, 6th district 2017)
4. Donovan Palmer- Lutheran W.
5. Chase Keener- Smithville
6. Clayton Baglia- Chippewa
7. Jarrod Malkus- Berkshire
8. Hunter Yeaples- Black River

Incoming Freshman:
Jacob Walsh- Rittman (7th middle school state)

I was impressed with Burgard at Top Gun, but I didn’t expect him to hit a whole new level at the state tournament where he beat an ever improving Morgillo in the semis before pinning Hostetler in the finals to earn his first state title.

1. Brennan Shirley- Tuslaw (SQ)
2. Beau Lefever- Mapleton (SQ)
3. Jack Brocco- Independence
4. Jarrett Varner- Waynedale (6th district)
5. Wyatt Zimmerman- Orrville
6. Chandler Keener- Smithville
7. Brock Lowery- Loudonville
8. Carl Ramser- Brooklyn

Incoming Freshman:
Ian Mariola- Triway (8th middle school state)

I’d be surprised if Shirley wasn’t a state placer this season. He beat state placer Hardenbrook 15-6 in the district semis last year and made it to the blood round in Columbus where he was pinned by the dangerous Danishek (who had all 5 of his state tournament bouts end in a pin).

1. David Cumberledge- (Ashtabula) St. John (2nd state)
2. Kyle Ryder- Tuslaw (5th state)
3. Nick Skye- Mogadore (SQ)
4. Connor Hrubik- Garfield (6th district)
5. Jeremy Tracy- Mapleton*
6. Micah Hershberger- Waynedale
7. Devon Dillon- South Range
8. Jimmy Senick- Independence

If he’s healthy, I probably have former middle school state champ Tracy ranked too low, but unfortunately, he’s missed his first two seasons with injury.

1. Sevi Garza- Rittman (7th state)
2. Clayton Takacs- Grand Valley (5th district)
3. Christian Blank- (Ashtabula) St. John (SQ 2017)
4. Gavin Davis- Loudonville (6th district)
5. Chris Anderson- Rootstown
6. Nick Rossi- Independence
7. Logan Penix- Mogadore
8. Max Lemon- Waynedale

Incoming Freshman:
Logan Shephard- Fairless (2nd middle school state)

I really like the youth contingent at this weight. Garza placed at the state tournament as a freshman last year, Anderson was a middle school state finalist in 2017, Davis will only be a junior, and Shephard was a middle school state finalist last year.

1. Jacob Lagoa- (Ashtabula) St. John (1st, 1st state)
2. Julian Colbert- Clearview (SQ)
3. Kaden Kidd- Norwayne (SQ)
4. Nathan Shaw- Waynedale
5. Doug Byrne- Wickliffe
6. Mike McHale- Newbury
7. Hunter Morris- Southern
8. Josh Kasler- Tuslaw

Colbert was a revelation to me at the district tournament last year. I didn’t know much about him, and he got pinned by Shaw in the 1st round. He came all the way back through the tournament to place 3rd, defeating Kidd 6-5 in the consolation finals.

1. Chris Langguth- Rootstown (4th, 6th state)
2. Jake Loar- Tuslaw (6th state)
3. Alex Merwin- Triway
4. Kaleb Merrick-Neff- Liberty
5. Zach Hazlett- Grand Valley
6. Jordan Krucek- Cuyahoga Hts.
7. Alex Piczer- Newbury
8. Latrell Crute- Southern

Incoming Freshmen:
Lucas Stoddard- Berkshire (4th middle school state)
Michael Lowe- Mogadore (5th middle school state)

Langguth (along with teammate Boyle) will be a legit threat for a state title this year, though the upper weights in D-3 will be dense with talent. Langguth is the highest returning state placer at 182, though he may need to move up to 195 if 2x state champ Lagoa wrestles 182. 195 returns state champ Jump as well as 4th place finisher Nassar, either of whom could grow into 220.

1. Ryan Boyle- Rootstown (7th, 4th state)
2. Mitch Sanders- Newbury (6th district)
3. Kiras Kijauskas- V.A.-St.J.
4. Luke Clymer- Independence
5. Anthony Czap- South Range (5th district 2017)
6. Mason Shreve- Grand Valley
7. Joe Hackett- Brookfield
8. Dylan Gubanyar- Lutheran W.

I expect Boyle to move back up to 220 next year where he wrestled most of last season and placed 4th in the state in 2017. Among his wins at 220 last year was a 7-5 victory over D-2 state champ Tyler Stein.

1. Justin Bell- Columbia (6th district)
2. Chase Cottrell- Grand Valley
3. Dante Pelino- (Columbiana) Crestview
4. Jeff Kusar- Kirtland
5. Joe Conners- Cuyahoga Hts.
6. Brice Swindall- Loudonville
7. Luke Daley- Triway
8. Gavin Lever- Beachwood

Incoming Freshmen:
Austin Ryder- Dalton (2nd middle school state)
Aidan Ritaccio- Kirtland (4th middle school state)

I’m glad to see a few talented freshmen are expected to be at this district. This weight graduates a ton of talent with 2x state champ Willis, 3x state placer Skye, state placer Hamrick, state qualifier Auble and state alternate Thompson all leaving.

1. Joe Warren- Smithville (8th state)
2. William Lindsey- Hawken
3. Owen Stoudemire- Norwayne
4. Coddie Phillips- Orrville
5. Noah Hoffman- Garfield
6. Jack Decker- Elyria Cath.
7. Elijah Caraballo- Columbia
8. Brady Brungard- (N.M.) Springfield

Incoming Freshman:
Ryan Elrod- (Ashtabula) St. John (3rd middle school state)

I’d be surprised if Elrod was as good as his brother right out of the gate as a freshman, but I don’t think state qualification is out of the questions. This heavyweight classification graduates a great deal if talent at the Garfield Heights District, and there’ll be plenty of room for talented underclassmen to seize a state qualification spot.

1. Rootstown
2. Tuslaw
3. (Ashtabula) St. John
4. Waynedale
5. Grand Valley
6. Lutheran West
7. Independence
8. Smithville

St. John will likely be the state runners- up in D-3 again this season, though I’m not sure if they will claim a district title. Rootstown and Tuslaw have a higher number of potential scorers, but St. John could make a push if the freshman Elrod can reach the district finals.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Baum’s Page and Jake’s Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.

Patrick Reineke is very talented. Hopefully he can hit a big growth spurt and add about 25 lbs over the summer.

You're right. He'll definitely be contending for state placement during his high school career, but he may need a year to grow into the weight.
