The timing of this, both in terms of the calendar and in terms of Stoops' relative youth is quite odd. Seems like something more going on.

Says it isn't health related and that he wants to "go live life." But yeah it's weird timing.

Considering fall camp probably starts the first week of August, this is mighty strange timing. Either this has been planned for a long time & they're just springing it on everyone now, or something very odd is going on.
There's almost no choice, but to have an assistant take over for this season at this point. You couldn't possibly do an external search quickly enough now.

33-year-old offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is the new Oklahoma head coaching. Not part of the Stoops tree but actually a Leach guy, know for developing WRs. This situation is just as wacky as the Matta one with regards to timing...

Here is my take and I could be way off. It is funny he wants to retire in Chicago which leads me to believe he may have had some conversations with the Bears in going to the NFL next year. The Bears will probably get rid of their head coach in a year or two.

I think it's entirely possible he ends up coaching ND if Kelly gets the boot. He was a former ND Asst, and Chicago is only 45 minutes from South Bend.

I wonder what Stoops' connection to Chicago is. Is it his wife?
This Tribune article says they already owned the house next door to the one they just bought.

Kelly's not going to be back this year IMO. ND is only a 7, maybe 8 win team and with Stoops a Free Agent, there's no way ND doesn't pull the trigger.

Does have side by side multi million dollar townhouses in Chicago. But I would think he's done.

He's the same age as Saban when he took the Bama job.

Yes. I think the only reason Kelly was saved this year was bc the lack of suitable replacements. There's dumb fans who would say "anyone is better than Kelly", but it's not true. He's a decent coach, just not up to par for ND.

And Saban didn't have a National Championship as HC, 2 Heisman winners, nor dominate his conference when he took the Bama job. The fact he did it mid offseason makes me think something in his personal life came up. I don't see him returning.

I'd be surprised if Stoops returning to coaching at all, as well.

Sources telling me UC is the only job that would bring him out of retirement.

Saban won a title at LSU. He also bolted from the Dolphins after saying he wouldn't. I'm not saying it's a certainty, in fact I hope Kelly wins enough games to justify his return, but if not Stoops isn't unrealistic.
