Darby D-1 District Rankings (Off-Season #5)

I love doing these rankings, but as it has been pointed out before, they are just for fun. To any wrestlers who read these and feel that they are ranked too low, you may be right.
I am bound to be wrong on many of the rankings, but fortunately they have absolutely no impact on how anyone will finish at any tournament this season or any other year.

I started moving wrestlers up and down from their previous year’s weights. The new weights are partially based off of where they’ve been wrestling in the off season, though a lot of it is pure guesswork at this time.
Please let me know if anyone has inside information about new weights, schools, or wrestlers that they think should be added.

I’ve tried shifting the wrestlers around from schools that changed divisions. Please let me know if any are wrong, or if I’m forgetting any schools/wrestlers.

* = unsure about participation

-The schools of the incoming freshmen are based off of the previous Yappi thread. Please let me know if any are wrong or have changed.

106-
1. Jacob Reed – Lancaster (4th middle school state)
2. Mitch Herren- Upper Arlington
3. James Baumann- Coffman (7th middle school state)
4. Trevor Mangahas- Pickerington C. (6th district)
5. Mason Boyd- Watkins Mem.
6. Michael Jones- Marysville*
7. Evan Grose- Darby
8. Deacan Sawchuk- Bradley

113-
1. Logan Agin- Lancaster (4th state)
2. Lucas Seibert- Westerville N. (5th district, 6th district 2016)
3. Jacob Sherman- Olentangy (SQ)
4. Doug Patterson- Mifflin (SQ)
5. Kyle Murray- Coffman (SQ)
6. Tyler Bemrose- Bradley
7. Nate Hammond- Teays Valley*
8. Cole Jackson- (Olentangy) Orange

Sherman earned an 8-3 win over Georgia state placer Joey Felix (8-3) at Super 32.

120-
1. Jordan Rosselli- (Olentangy) Liberty (4th state)
2. Micah Norwood – Lancaster (1st middle school state)
3. Micah Dusseau- Davidson (SQ)
4. Alec Fulwider- Watkins Mem. (5th district, 5th district 2016)
5. Jesse Bowers- Upper Arlington (6th district)
6. Lupe’ Velasquez- Coffman
7. Christian Salazar- Lincoln
8. Ben Brown- Darby

Norwood showed that he is ready for prime time at Super 32. His two losses at the event were to Michigan state champ Ben Kamali and Iowa state champ Brody Teske by scores of 1-0 and 4-2 respectively. Kamali is ranked 15th in the country by Flo Wrestling, and Teske, a Penn State recruit is ranked 6th in the nation.

I thought that I saw a Ben Brown from Ohio wrestling at the Grappler Fall Classic at 140, though I’m not sure if it’s the same wrestler. If it is, then he’s grown considerably from 113 where he was at last year.

126-
1. Gio DiSabato- Davidson (2nd, 4th, 6th state)
2. Blake Saito- (Olentangy) Liberty (7th state)
3. William Harris- Tri-Valley (SQ 2016)
4. Teddy Hill- Upper Arlington (6th district 2016)
5. Zane Rennie- Watkins Mem.
6. Griffin Wilfing- Lancaster
7. Hudson Leapley- Central Crossing
8. Mitchell Coultas- Licking Hts.

DiSabato has improved his state placement each season, and there is only one spot left to climb up the podium this year. It’ll be a stern test, but he’s as capable as any of the top wrestlers to walk away with a gold medal at the end of the year.

132-
1. Mason Sparks- Marion Harding (SQ)
2. Zach Williams- Hayes (SQ)
3. Bailey Munday- Big Walnut (SQ)
4. Devin Wood- Central Crossing
5. Zander Ellison- Bradley (SQ)
6. Cray Miller- Lancaster
7. Brandon Hassel- Pickerington N. (6th district)
8. Nick Varanelli- Olentangy

This weight looks like it could be a lot of fun to watch at the district tournament if it stays the way it’s currently constructed.
There are 3 returning state qualifiers, Hassel (who I’ve heard is improving rapidly), Wood (who can hang with anyone here), and Miller who had some impressive results as a freshman last year including a pin over Hassel.

138-
1. Daniel Segura- Scioto (SQ)
2. Blake Wright- Westerville N. (5th district)
3. Chase Haimerl- Thomas Worthington (6th district)
4. Ryan Fahy- Central Crossing
5. Brady Pethtel- Olentangy
6. Jayce Fitzpatrick – (Olentangy) Liberty (8th middle school state)
7. Justin Swavely- Grove City
8. Jared Droesch- Watkins Mem.

Blake Wright posted a 2-1 win over Michigan state champion Skyler Crespo at the Hoosier Preseason Classic.

145-
1. Walker Heard- Marysville (7th state)
2. Demetrius Monroe- Davidson (SQ)
3. James White- Olentangy (5th district 2016)
4. Derrick Mitchell- Lancaster
5. J.T. Lemmerman- Bradley
6. Cole Foster- Big Walnut
7. Corbin May- Hayes
8. Tristan Bluntschly- O. Orange

White pinned state bronze medalist Kyle McDonough at Super 32.

152-
1. Connor Brady- (Olentangy) Liberty (3rd, 4th state)
2. Jake Marsh- Marysville (SQ, 6th state 2016)
3. Xander Gore- Olentangy (SQ)
4. Ben Yost- Coffman (SQ)
5. Connor Evans- (Olentangy) Orange (6th district)
6. Luke DeWeese- Davidson
7. Cody Mayes- Westerville C.
8. Max VanFossen- Mt. Vernon

I was bummed that Brady didn’t wrestle at Super 32, but he’ll get a crack at Cadet World Freestyle champ Will Lewan at Ironman.
Marsh will also be at the event, and we could potentially see an early season match-up between the two district favorites.
Marsh beat state placer Wyatt Pfau (6-1) and state champ Ryan Luth (8-1) at Super 32.

160-
1. Jaden Mattox- Central Crossing (2nd, 1st, 2nd state)
2. Tyler Bates- Marysville (8th state)
3. Hunter Thornsberry- Newark
4. Avery Flanagan- Olentangy
5. Emmanuel Johnson- Teays Valley
6. Mark Trifelos- Upper Arlington
7. Hunter Barker- Grove City
8. Reid Conrad- Davidson

Mattox will get a crack at the #1 ranking at Ironman where he could see current #1 David Carr as well as #5 Andrew Merola, #18 Ryan Thomas, and potentially #14 Carson Kharchilava (if he’s still at this weight).

170-
1. Carson Kharchilava- (Olentangy) Liberty
2. Lennox Wolak- Coffman (SQ)
3. Mitch Potterf- Westerville N.
4. Cole Foor- Watkins Mem. (SQ)
5. Jordan Deluse- Lancaster
6. Seth Morley- Upper Arlington
7. Logan Tate- Mt. Vernon
8. Josh Keese- Thomas Worthington

Kharchilava (Kharchla?) keeps putting on more and more impressive performances. He finished 3rd at Super 32 (@160) where he beat Oregon state champ Sean Harmon (5-2), Minnesota state champ Kenny O’Neil (4-1), as well as #16 ranked (by Flo Wrestling) Danny Braunagel (7-1), 10th ranked Erich Byelick (8-2), and 6th ranked Philip Conigliaro (5-1).
That’s not a bad season’s worth of wins, and Carson pulled it off in one weekend.

182-
1. Trevor Lawson- (Olentangy) Liberty (3rd, 2nd state)
2. A.J. McRitchie- Lancaster (5th district)
3. Deron Pulliam- Scioto
4. Garegin Soghomonyan- Upper Arlington (6th district)
5. Charlie Kneessi- Thomas Worthington
6. Nathan Dewitt- Marysville
7. Brendan Yoder- Davidson
8. Nate Garbark- Lincoln

195-
1. Jared Ball- Darby (3rd, 3rd state)
2. Ashton Spurgeon- Mt. Vernon (SQ)
3. Brady Garren- Logan (6th district)
4. Bodi Bien- Westerville N. (6th district)
5. Issa Khalil- Bradley
6. Levi McKee- Newark
7. Quinn Kelley- Lancaster
8. Jake Waldrop- Watkins Mem.

Ball wrestled up at 220 for the Grappler Fall Classic where he beat Ben Goldin 3-2 in the semifinals before falling 6-3 to Brandon Whitman in the finals. Goldin, a Florida state champ, is ranked 13th in the nation by Flo Wrestling while Whitman is ranked 4th (@195).
He followed that performance with an even more impressive Super 32 where he won the tournament title after knocking off Lucas Davison 5-1 in the finals. Davison is currently ranked 6th in the nation by Flo Wrestling.

220-
1. Jacob Cover- Darby (SQ)
2. Dante Landolfi- Upper Arlington
3. Spencer Smith- Lancaster
4. Assante Ndongo- Whitehall-Yearling
5. Soriba Kaba- Westland
6. Jaden Smith- Teays Valley
7. Ethan Smeagal- Marysville
8. Tanner Stevens- Grove City

I was sorry to hear that state placer Bryce Houston is likely done for the season after a football injury.
Good luck to him in his college football career.

285-
1. Tyler Connolly- Marysville (SQ)
2. Davin Lambert – (Olentangy) Liberty (5th district)
3. Derick Bowman- Lancaster (6th district)
4. Nathan Murphy- Olentangy
5. Dawson Shaw- West
6. Davis Gaylord- Westerville N.
7. Braden Fields- Lincoln*
8. Efrain Lopez- Northland*

Teams:
1. Lancaster
2. (Olentangy) Liberty
3. Marysville
4. Upper Arlington
5. Olentangy
6. Westerville North
7. Davidson
8. Coffman

There haven’t been many moves since the last set of rankings, and I certainly encourage any fan-editing if anyone has inside information about the weights of wrestlers.
After the northeast district posted the sectional distribution, we were able to see just how loaded the Perrysburg District will be this season.
I’m guessing that when the central district sectional selections occur, we will see a very thin sectional heading to Perrysburg.

Lancaster still looks like the favorite, though the margin will likely be narrowed a bit by the number of bonus points that Brady, Kharchilava, Lawson, and Rosselli are likely to rack up.
That being said, I’m always impressed with how Lancaster wrestlers are able to push the pace, especially late in matches. That should be worth a few pins, majors, and techs at the district tournament.

I expect teams like Westerville North and Coffman to reload, especially in the upper-weights, but I just don’t know enough about their middle school/reserve line-up from last year to know who will be the next line of district caliber wrestlers for each team.
If they’re as deep as they have traditionally been, we could see both teams climb in the rankings.

A special thanks to Boro Fan for all the insight into the weights of the wrestlers, Inside the Circle for all of their great coverage and promotion of the Central District, Baum’s Page and Jake’s Wrestling for all of the results that they provide, and to any of the other wrestling nerds that actually read these things.

Totally agree. I'd imagine even in February we would have multiple changes. I think it'll be an exciting year! I'm more impressed how large this district has grown and how the competition has gotten better.

Tristin Siemer who was a 2x state qualifier at Bishop Ready as a Freshmn and Sophomore, before taking last year off, will be wrestling for Grove City this season. Guessing possibly at 195

I was disappointed when he didn't wrestle last year. Glad to hear he will be back this year.

At 220, Westerville Central's DeRose will be in the mix in that 5-8 range.

So a question. With the added Whitehall Section, does that mean that 9 of these schools that are traditionally Darby, will go to the NW? That means some of these kids will not be part of the Darby District?

If that is the case, I assume we will have to wait for selection day to find out who?

Although your sentiment is correct, technically, there is an error.

Two teams (actually three) that will attend the WY sectional have never been to the Darby District. The two teams from the north as well as Whitehall are those teams. And this year will be no different.

The remaining six teams will travel to the NW district this season.

...and they will 'self-select', correct? I.e. choose to go to WY, and thus choose to go NW for Districts.

Does is makes sense that most Central Ohio teams will not want to travel for Districts, so in all likelihood the better teams will go to Darby, the the teams that are most likely to get bumped during sectional selection will go to Whitehall?

Lambeau,

It will be more less of a bump that will put teams in the WY sectional from higher teams that do not want to go to WY.

Lima Senior will be a new addition to the Darby District since they will be put in the Marysville Sectional.

Probably, but not entirely true. You may get 1 or 2 in the middle of the pack that may jump to Whitehall because of the possibility of getting more guys to the district tournament.

This news came out before I accepted my new position (D3 school), and I remember sitting with my assistants talking about this. If you have 1 or 2 studs that'll make it out anywhere and several middle of the road guys, maybe opt to go to Whitehall to increase the chances of getting more guys to the district and getting those guys experience at the next level (thus helping seed criteria as well). Or even if you don't have those studs, the second part still applies in trying to get guys to the district tournament.

Agreed. I should have qualified it to say the only "good teams" that go there will self-select. Lower seeded "bumped" teams, won't have a choice.

I'm on record as stating that at least one teams - possibly two teams - between the rankings of #8 & #20 will go to Whitehall, and thus the NW district, for the very reasons Cramer cited.

If the team is young, and those young kids are more likely to qualify for and experience the district tournament, I think the coaches will select the Whitehall sectional. Not to mention, the additional week of practice! That's right - I'm talking about practice.
