Dublin Freshmen All State

Thoughts

Any freshmen this year impress? This tourney and Centerville's Buckeye typically show us what schools have reloaded with young talent.

I will say ED's will have some hammers. Also, Solon will bring a good team with some future state caliber kids. They are always tough! Mason is the returning champ and will defiantly be looking at trying to win again this year. They always bring a good group of kids! Hey Bucksman what do you think?

Is this confirmed? If so that is a strong statement for Lakota West!

What about Moeller, I know they had a pretty strong freshman team, and link to placers/ brackets?

Moeller was not there. And yes, Lakota West won the tournament.

Did St.Eds send a Freshman B team or something. I thought they won the Centerville Buckeye tournament.

I know that the best Freshman (IMO) that Eds has was with the varsity team in Columbus, I'm guessing they had other freshman too, Freshman states is sort of filtered talent.

Freshman who wrestle varsity all season wouldn't even attend would they?
Or why would they?

That's the hard part in getting the full picture of a team's talent or up and coming talent. Freshman that wrestle Varsity aren't at this tournament. In most cases these are "Stud" type wrestlers. However, placing in this as a Team certainly is a positive sign and says something about the wrestling program.

Ed's typically sent most of their higher level Freshman to this event, essentially all Freshman not on the Gold Team. I remember when Mark Martin was here after a full year of Green Team action along with several others that were in the same boat. Not sure exactly why that was not the case this year.

First off congrats to West. The future looks bright for Whitey and the Chocolate gang! I believe the Centerville Freshman tourney is the better of the two when it comes to competition. Both tourneys are great for competition at the freshman level, I just think the competition....and of course the hospitality room at C'ville is the best!

St. Ed's Varsity Green team had a match Friday night against Bedford. Then most of them went to Columbus. The rest took a much needed rest since some wrestled on Wednesday against Solon.

Nice job West...going from from 12th at Centerville to 1st at Dublin.

They must have been hiding some of that talent at the varsity level

I can't speak for other schools and how they handle their Frosh, and who is healthy this time of year, but at Lakota West 34 of our 40 wrestlers are Freshman and Sophomores. As a result, a bunch of Frosh had to start varsity by default this year because that is all we have, and most of them have just been getting pounded week after week (except for 1 Frosh that actually has a winning record). We held them all out of a couple events during the season (like the Dayton Holiday) to buffer them a little bit from the beatings and save some points so they could all go to a Frosh event or two so they can actually experience a little bit of success here and there and realize they actually are pretty good for their level.

We had 11 Frosh total at this event, including 5 who have been going varsity (by default). I would say they had a pretty good weekend, and now are feeling pretty good about themselves again. I don't care what anyone says, losses pile up and beat kids down mentally and physically, and my kids needed a week on the Frosh level where most of them should have been all year if we had more upperclassmen.

That makes sense when you think about it....most freshman thrown into the varsity lineup by default are going to struggle. I think it is great to send them to a good frosh tourney to get them back in the winning mode. Its a great confidence builder! Nice work Lakota West!

I agree with you. They do need a break, but what about your Frosh who won the GMC league varsity tourney the week before and also wrestled at Dublin? Does it do any good to send him to a Frosh event or rest him for the post season run? Just curious as to what people thoughts are on that one? I can see good either way. Congrats again on what your doing over there on the West side!

You are talking about Fenton, our one Frosh who is doing decent on varsity. Due to missing a few weeks with injury, going into Sectionals he would have only had one event in the whole month (the GMC's) leading into the Sectional tournament. He needed some mat time. Plus, going into the GMC tourney he was barely over .500 for the year. Our other "varsity" kids finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th at Dublin...hardly what I would call ringers. We did what we thought was best for our program, and that was to try to give all our young kids a little bit of success as a group before the season ends.

Nice job west. Those kids will reap the benifits of early varsity experience later. I too agree that every now and then it's good for a freshmen to wrestle his peers after getting thrust into varsity. As good as they are they are still freshmen. Lean on them too much and they won't be there by their senior year. It's a balance.

I know others have responded "no", but it is simply not true. I saw several kids at the tournament on Saturday who I saw at previous varsity tournaments.

Nice job by the folks in Dublin BTW. Well run tournament. Good wrestling. Nice awards.

Freshman who wrestle Varsity can attend this event and are entitled to attend this event. It just depends on the needs of their specific teams, points available, coaches reasons, etc.
