Mason

Not so fast...Mason graduated six seniors who all started last year and are all playing at the next level. This includes the GMC P-O-Y and All-State pitcher.

This year they have a ton of seniors and their success depends on that group's ability to step up and lead (and starting pitching too ).

The GMC has some very good hitters this year...

Mason will be fine. I think their soph catcher is very good and they have some great options in the circle. Gabby Lasala is still there and she is as good as anyone in the league. No program deeper than Mason. They will be tough!

I would pick Mason or West to win it. Oak Hills should be in the conversation before Fairfied.

Should be another tight three team race like 2014. I give a slight edge to Mason.
The middle of the pack will be close like last year as well 4th through 7th and 5 through 7 go go any order between Colerain, Hamilton and Sycamore.

My prediction:

Mason: Co champs last year and a knack for winning big games lost a lot but, the cupboard is not bare with plenty of upperclass talent.15/16 GMC Ws
West: well coached and a solid program 2014 co champs as well. IMO best team to battle Mason. 15/16 GMC Ws
East: consistent program with good coaching they will be in the hunt all year. EAST,WEST and Mason have strong JV programs so talent should not be an issue for any one of them. 13/15 GMC Ws
OH Returns a lot with good coaching and should battle for the top four with 12/13 GMC Ws.
Fairfield: No repeat here, they lost a lot. Pitching will be key for them . They are well coached if they get some pitching could pick up 10/11 Ws in the GMC.
Sycamore: Lost several talented seniors but; they have been steady the past few years will get an upset or two but still finish under.500 in the GMC 8/9 GMC Ws
Hamilton: Lost a lot but should be a little stronger than the bottom three 7/8 GMCWs.
Colerain: Colerain will be very young but should have enough athletes to best Princeton and Middletown 2x and get some Ws that slipped away from them last year... 5/7 Ws in the GMC.
Middletown : Not much will change from last year 2/4 Ws in the GMC.
Princeton: Will be another long year. No O no D no pitching+= 0 GMC wins

Here is a link you can use.
Since the 2000 the GMC has done a good job of getting to the final 4. Its hard to beat the Hoovers etc from up north.
Just a Quick look, Mason and Hamilton 3X ...Colerain, East and Sycamore 1X GMC trips total 9X to the state finals since 2000
If you go back to the 80S including slow pitch the GMC had several more final / final four trips and took a few state titles. Princeton, Fairfield Hamilton...

Interesting - I don't think Hamilton will be anywhere above 8 or 9. I see it a bit differently. Sycamore is the best of the bottom half.

1. Mason
2. West
3. Oak Hills
4. East

I don't see why Hamilton would be 8, they finished 5th last year in the league behind (Mason,West,Fairfield,East) whom all have multiple college players. Hamilton loses 3 starters (1 who was the starting pitcher and is hard to replace because I don't believe there is one as good as her)

Mason,East,West,Fairfield--- all will still be top contenders for the league.

Oak Hills- A very good coach who will get them wins, very young last year as well. (Probably will be above Hamilton)

Colerain--Still young, but not very good.

Middletown/Princeton---Awful

Sycamore- Not so sure, lost a lot of seniors, but will figure it out.

GMC predicitions

I think West will be the strongest team. Solid pitching and good offense. Although West lost 2 Div. 1 players (Sharp and Hedric) and 1 Div. 2 player (Burbrink), I think they have enough to get the job done. As always, East and Mason will also be in the picture.

East and Mason have the best single players - Rachel Lewis of East & Gabby LaSala of Mason but West may very well have the best TEAM. And that is usually most important. Going to be a fun year because for once we don't have a returning stud pitcher for any team. Looks like East returns a good pitcher in Junior Kianah Towe but she did not throw every game last year so still some uncertainty there.

Who is Fairfield gonna put in the circle? I'm not sure they have much pitching coming up from the 7th and 8th grade class either. Is talent pool drying up in Fairfield?

You would have to go further back than the 80's as suggested in the quote above to find any slow pitch titles, if any existed. The GMC was a fast pitch league from 1979 on and the member schools were pretty much, if not entirely out of slow pitch by 1980 and beyond.

Although the GMC started in 1966-67, they did not sanction softball until 1973-74 so the slow pitch softball era in the GMC only lasted five seasons.

The first, last, and only state title for a GMC school is by the 1985 Hamilton team as far as I know.

I think HSFB might be making reference to current GMC member schools that weren't part of the conference in the 80's like Mason, Colerain and Oak Hills that were still playing slow pitch at that time.

I wouldn't say by far - Oak Hills is squarely in the mix when talking about East, West, or Mason this year. They will contend for the title.

All OHSAA sanctioned softball state tournaments starting with the first in 1978 have been fast pitch.

The only state wide slow pitch tournaments were sponsored by a state coaches association. There were just 8 such tournaments held and those occurred in 1991 through 1998. None of the eight slow pitch championships were won by Mason, Colerain, or Oak Hills.

Ok so why were schools competing in slow pitch if not sanctioned by the state? I do not recall slow pitch being a club sport when I was at Colerain. But I look forward to your answer Shelby Foote.

In the late 60's and early 70's high schools were adding girls sports to remove the inequities of athletic opportunity that existed between boys and girls.

In the early 70's one of the popular girls sports being played outside the schools in the spring and summer was softball. That made softball a natural to add to the high school programs.

In southwest ohio the most popular variant of the game was slow pitch but that was not necessarily the case in other parts of the state. Since the state through OHSAA did not sanction high school state tournaments for any sport until it was offered by 150 schools (about 25%) the race was on between the slow pitch and fast pitch advocates. In 1978 the fast pitch proponents reached 150 schools first and OHSAA started sanctioning state championship tournaments. Over time the slow pitch advocates hung on but slowly dropped by the wayside. Lakota, with which I'm most familiar, added slow pitch to the high school program in 1974. Their league the MML also was a slow pitch league. By 1978 Lakota was playing some fast pitch so that they could compete in the state tournament but were also playing slow pitch in their league. In 1980 Lakota joined the GMC which was a fast pitch league and abandoned slow pitch all together. In the nearly 40 years since the first OHSAA tournament the number of high school teams offering fast pitch has grown from 150 to nearly 800 and slow pitch which probably got up to 100 schools or so early on has now, as far as I know, completely disappeared from the high school scene.

Colerain looks as the surprise team so far... run rulling Hamilton 12-0?? Not that Hamilton is great or anything but an average team..

Mason beats Granville 18-1, then loses 9-7? I know Mason isn't as good as last year but they are still solid.. Is granville good?

West goes 2-5 out of town, playing very good teams though.

IMO, East is the favorite so far. Outscoring opponets 29-0 through 3 games, wow.

Any other thoughts???

Oak Hills hasn't played anyone to really know yet. But they do return everyone. Could help.

West seems less than the typical team they produce but they are always fund. sound.

My guess is East and Mason will battle for the #1 spot..

Fairfield may have spoken too soon regarding never having a losing season. Seems they are going to struggle.

Weather looks to suck this week so hopefully they can get some games in.
Good start for Colerain, Oak Hills and EAST but there have not been enough games played to see who has what. WEST hitting .226 after 7 games is a little of a shock but the teams they faced may have had stud pitching.

Big game tonight between Lakota East and Mason. Should be a tough game with East having a solid lineup from top to bottom. Mason is young but the coaching is top notch over there. Should be a great game tonight!!

Mason or East will win the league, after Mason winning tonight 4-3 @ East, Mason has an advantage. I wouldn't count out West however.

Looks like OH is much better than the bottom half . May 21st vs. FF will be a good one battling for 4th.

WEST and MASON, play 2X next week I see Mason taking them out of the race.

The schedule is set for FF to go on a GMC Run next week. They were competitive vs. Lebanon and Harrison in close games OH and FF will battle for 4th

Princeton is working to lock down last again, C-rain, Midd, Ham, Sycamore appear to be battling for next to last.
