OHSAA Fall Sports Practices Begin Friday; Football Update

Eight new football-playing schools result in minor changes to division and regional alignments

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Practices for all fall sports get underway Friday, August 1, for member schools of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. August 1 has been set as the universal practice start date for all OHSAA sanctioned fall sports, which include girls tennis, girls and boys golf, girls and boys cross country, field hockey, boys and girls soccer, volleyball and football.

Football Updates and Notes
Of the OHSAA’s 824 member schools, 723 sponsor football teams, which is eight more schools than 2013 (see list below). Seven of the eight new schools are in Division VII. A total of 224 schools – 32 in each Division – will qualify for the playoffs when the final computer ratings are announced Sunday morning, Nov. 2. During the 2014 playoffs, Divisions II, III, IV and VI will play on Fridays, while Divisions I, V and VII will play on Saturdays (same format as 2013).

State Championships Information
One of the divisions playing on Fridays during the playoffs will play its state championship game on Thursday, Dec. 4. The other Friday divisions will play their state championship games on Friday, Dec. 5, while the Saturday divisions will play their state championship games on Saturday, Dec. 6. The state championships schedule will be announced after the state semifinals. For the first time since 1989, the state championship games will be hosted at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.

One confusing part is the: "723 sponsor football teams, which is eight more schools than 2013". We have 8 new schools participating in football for the 2014 season but at least one that has closed (Brookhaven). Just a mistake in the press release or am I missing something?
