Week Five is here

Well, four weeks are in the books. We are now at the midpoint of the 2019 regular season with four more weeks until we arrive at District week. Today is the day for one of the oldest Invitationals in Cincinnati, the Colerain Invitational. Some would say it's between Colerain and Anderson for the oldest.

OMG, today is the 50th Anniversary for the Colerain Invitational which started in 1970. I called the school and they knew that fact, put it in the meet program.

Check out the Finneytown Invite from last night. https://oh.milesplit.com/meets/35490...w#.XLcs49h7lZo

Gabe Vanskiak (listed as Gabe Van Skaik) from Reading long jumped 23' 6".... That might be a facility record at Finneytown, and just might be a Reading HS record as well. Anyone know much about this kid? Heck of a jump. Reading's track program has been around since at least the mid 1920's.

Mt. Healthy's 15-foot vaulter, Justin Abrams, vaulted 14' 6" into the wind. I KNOW that is not a facility record at Finneytown, but it might be the best HS vault ever there.

Lakota West's sophomore Annika Kinley HJ'ed 5' 7 1/2" last night at Colerain! That might be a Cincinnati area record for sophomores.

Ursuline's Madi Person darn near got another UA school record in the 400m, running 58.08 in second. Last I knew, 57.8 MT was the school record set way back in 2006 by Katelyn Hausfeld at the Mason District meet. Person last week had broken Lindsey Biddle's 2000 record of 14.79 in the 100mH with Person's 14.67 at the Zuleger Invite.

Some good marks I saw from Colerain last night in the boys were Rodney Heath Lakota East 10.76 in the 100, and in the girls Serena Clark East 24.76 in the 200 and Danni Stoughton East 57.79 400.

La Salle won their third Invitational of 2019 holding off Lakota West 161 - 148.
The indoor state champion Lakota East won the girls meet with 132 points. Can they win the outdoor state meet as well?

Jaydon Wood looked very good at the Joe Lenge Dublin Classic last Saturday. She ran a 24.82 in the 200 with a little bit of a head wind. (And ran the prelim in 24.96). She looked fit and smooth in the 200 and the 100.

Never mind. FinishTiming did the timing.

+3.7 mps wind-aided run by Rodney Heath with his 10.76

-0.1 mps legal wind by Serena Clark with her 24.76

This is Day 1 of the Anderson Inv., one of the oldest meets in Cincinnat if not the oldest. This meet has some different events 40 yard dash and 2k steeplechase

Two of the best marks I see from Day 1 at Anderson

Gabe Hickman - Turpin - 56'5" - Boys Shot Put

Miya Brines - Loveland - 17'00" - Girls long jump

Another interesting person I note is junior Willow Keneda of Williamsburg (OH). She won the discus with 114' 1". Nothing stupendous, but she is within 6' of the LONG time Division III district record of 119' 2" set way back in 1984 by Clinton-Massie's Rhea Aker. Last year's winner with 116' 2", Yvonne Colson, now a sophomore at Madeira, should provide the competition to spur a new record at long last! Carlson is already out to 117' 6" herself.

Another one is Mariemont senior, Marin Valentine, who high jumped 5' 6", which might be a new school record for them. I believe that takes down Mariemont great Missy Castetter's 1982 record of 5' 5" set at the 1982 Region meet.

Lastly, I note that all the sprint events were into decent headwinds out of the south. Hopefully, those will turn around for today's finals.

Anyone know if the Gahanna Relays had a wind gauge or not? I don't seem to see one in the results - https://results.timingfirst.com/meets/2622

I note that LaCarr Trent ran 10.60 there.

Toss in Triple Jump. Coach Wolf likes his unique events. Also has the fat man relay but it is not a scored event (or at least they did back in my day).

My gut hunch says "no"

I sent an email to the timing company asking them if one was used. We'll see if they answer.

I have 29 girls listed on the high jump rankings at 5'6" or higher. No female from Mariemont is on there, so I think it's safe to say that is a school record. Did Missy win the AA Regional in 1982 at 5'5"? At state places 3-6 all went 5'4" but Missy is not listed as a scorer. She won the 1981 AA 100m low hurdles in 14.55, but finished second in 1982 in 14.59.

Affirmative on Castetter's win at the 1982 Dayton AA Region HJ with her 5' 5" best. All four qualifiers out of that Region jumped 5' 4" at that meet.

This may be my memory fading but has the Anderson Invite field become a bit lackluster compared to previous decades?

The last several years it's run up against the Eastern Relays in Louisville, which tends to attract some of the top Cincy-area teams

The good times never last forever. You should look at the fabled Mansfield Relays. They've been decimated in the past 20 years. That used to be THE premier early season invite for decades. Now....

I suspect a temporary malfunction.

One good event today so far: West Clermont's Maddie Walker takes over the yearly Ohio 800m lead with her 2:14.70 after running a fine 5:05.94. Both in crappy weather.

I don't. Only two finishers in both girls hurdles, and four in the 100m.

I suspect a lot of kids didn't show for the events. The weather was absolutely miserable, windy, rainy, and cold.

Here is one result that I can't really evaluate. Is it good or not?

3000m Steeplechase, Ian Hanthorn, Anderson, 10:38.25

Somewhat later, I did find this mark as the Anderson school record and also the city record. 3,000m SC, 9:36.7 (MT), Shawn Proffitt, Anderson, DI, Keebler Inv., 6/18/88, 1st. The 2k steeple is much more common in Ohio meets than the 3k.

No malfunction. Only athlete that stayed to race and she stopped to walk the last 10 meters. Both girls hurdle races had just two of the finalist run.

The 800 was won by Morgan Walsh of West Clermont, the 2:14.70 broke the meet record she set last year.

My mistake.

Maddie Walker - 16/32
Morgan Walsh - 8

Two M.W.'s on the same team winning the distance events. It can confuse one

At the Eastern Relays, Taylor Ewert won the 3200m in 10:45.58 in a monsoon. Not too shabby.

I would love to see Taylor Ewert battle Sam Bush at the Angela Bizzarri mile in two weeks at Mason.
