Matthew Boling

Been seeing videos of this kid all season... Went 9.98 in the 100 this past weekend. Just absurd

That race had double the allowable tailwind to be legal (4.2 mps). They even ran the 100 the opposite direction to take advantage. A news article quoted a website formula that said it was worth a 10.26 with no wind. This was for comparison only.

I don't know the wind on his 26'3" long jump earlier in the season.

Wind or not he is very talented.

Thanks for posting that. Id only seen the video on Twitter. Definitely not (as) impressive, but quicker than me

Yeah the wind was over the limit still pretty good. Also ran sub 20.6 into the wind High Jump 6'7 Ran the 400 in 46 and some change so I think he is pretty good none the less.

With no wind, the conversion tables say 10.16. With a 2.0 wind, worth a 10.07.

His 26' 3 jump was legal, but he's not the furthest on the season. Tony Martin out of Michigan went 26' 6" with a 1.6 aiding wind. There's a thread about this on T&F News. The only caveat I would add is that the wind reading appears to have been taken with hand-held anemometer. I don't know what the regs are on that in HS competition, but I suspect for USATF & IAAF purposes, it wouldn't.

His numbers are rarified air no matter how you cut it.For a high schooler he's getting right up there with some of the all-time best. Nelloms ran 20.49 in the 200 and this kid is on the same plane...

Boling has a legal 10.20 under his belt.

His PRs:

HJ 6-7
LJ 26-3.5
PV 13-0
TJ 42-5.5
100 10.20 & 9.98 (wind aided)
200 20.55
400 46.15

Methinks he has a good future as a multi.

He committed to Georgia. Since he's a Texan I was somewhat surprised that Carl Lewis didn't snatch him up for Houston.

Boling's 10.20 is wind-aided (+2.2 mps). His 10.22 (+1.3 mps) is legal, and hence, his PR.

I don’t know how strong he is in the throws but with the above performances, he would compete for the NCAA decathlon championship TODAY.

Georgia is currently the premier multi school right now. They typically place more than one in the Dec and Hep each year at the NCAA Championship. Their women have been runner-up the past two years scoring with hep women and a 400 runner only. It appears that he probably chose the right school as far as track & field.

Nothing against the decathlon, but in this day & age, if you want to make a good living as a track & field athlete (and who knows what this guy wants), you want to be the world's fastest man. With his speed potential, that is where I'd point the focus. With the exception of possibly the long jump, forget the other events...My 2 cents.

My comments expressing surprise that Boling did not commit to Houston are rooted in the fact that Houston is currently one of the preeminent programs for sprinters. Not many programs can boast of sprinting coaches that are on caliber with Leroy Burrell and Carl Lewis. With Boling currently attending high school in Houston, I would assume that Houston did recruit him. Perhaps he wanted to get away from his hometown and that is understandable.

I believe that Boling's immediate future will primarily be in sprinting events and the Long Jump. The multis will more than likely be a post-collegiate endeavor.

I agree with you that it would be hard for a top Texas sprinter to turn their back on Houston with Burrell and Lewis in charge and knocking on your door. This kid going to Georgia instead is what makes me believe he is looking the multi route.

Not necessarily related to his college choice, that list of marks is incredible. Almost every mark would challenge to win Ohio's D1 state title.

44.7 in 4 x400 was down 2.5 seconds and won scores 36 points. And finished only 2 in state.

A wind legal 10.13 (1.3) yesterday to win the Texas state championship. This is now the national record, breaking a 29-year-old record of 10.15.

I'm hoping all of the "white lighting" and "he's white" talk will die down.

Yes, the National FEDERATION record; however, Boling is now equal to #5 all-time. He's still got to go sub-10 legal to get the all-time best of 10.00

HIs accepting a $10,000 challenge from Ted Ginn Jr (who will win for us old farts), how does that affect the kids status? Won't that remove college opportunity and why would Ginn even make such a proposal if it would?

I doubt the kid accepts the money. When he DUSTS Ginn Jr., the money could go directly to charity and not transact at all thru the kid.

Ginn's an idiot. His comments that he was "only 1 second" from the Olympics demonstrates either he has no clue what he's talking about or that he's talking smack to an audience that has no clue about Olympic qualifying standards and procedures.
