Purcell was top notch in the late 40s too, with WR Ron Beagle. They were voted the best team to come out of Cincinnati in 1947, but never got to play Massillon to see who should be named the best in Ohio.

Old Purcell HC Herb Woeste lived in my neighborhood when I was a kid.
His 1986 Purcell team was special.
They were DII state champs that year and even beat the DI state champs (Fairfield) in regular season.

Just like D2 champ LaSalle beat my D1 champ Bombers last year.

The dangerous thing that everyone has to understand is that Winton Woods does not care about losing these games. We are going to line up and go to battle, and give it our best. You guys would do a whole lot better just giving us credit for doing what few other schools has to the GCL. St. Eds, St. I, Trinity and Winton Woods.

Potential GCL final standings
1. St. X. 3-0
1. Winton Woods 3-0
2. LaSalle 2-1
3. Elder 1-2
4. Moeller 0-3
DMR you sandbagger, WW has a very good shot to beat Elder again at home. The week 10 game with Moeller will be tough, but again at home. Both games will be big for the GCLS teams as they could use a 7/8-win Harbin cow to boost their playoff chances.

Being called a "sandbagger" is not sitting well with me. I mean what exactly should I be saying? We're talking about a tier 2 against 3 out of 4 mighty GCL South teams.

Wood Peckers are a "decent tier 2" squad. As it's been over 1,000 days since they've won a D2 playoff game, I'm not yet ready to bump them up to a "good tier 2" team.

LaSalle 25-2

X 19-8

Elder 15-12

All of the above.

Only "bad loss" this year was game with St. X.
Lost to LaSalle in last minute of play. Lost to KY #1 ranked Trinity in a good, back & forth, game.

Though I believe Moe is on the verge of going winless in the GCL for the second year in a row....

SCHEDULE and AD! AD schedules the games and since he has been doing that the past three years our schedule has been brutal. The GCL South has provided great games so far this year. Moe had LaSalle beat and lost at the end. Elder almost beat X at X. I think the Crusaders rise up Friday night and win at The Pit. I think they end up at least 5-5 and get in the Playoffs. X was 5-5 last year and won State. GBM!

Almost counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. How exactly did Elder "almost" beat X. They never had the lead the entire game and although they racked up some yardage they never scored a touchdown. Now did they play X tough, the answer is yes, but to say they almost beat X is a bit of a stretch.

A little history lesson. The great Paul Brown built Massilon Washington into a state power in his 9 year span as head coach (1932-1940). This was before the AP poll started their HS football poll in 1947. The reputation and strength of the team that Paul Brown built didn't wane, as they were named AP Ohio champs 13 times in the first 27 years of the AP poll, including the 1st year of the playoffs when Warren Western Reserve won the first D1 championship. I think during that era, if Massilon went undefeated, the AP gave them the nod as state champions. If they lost, the team that beat them got the nod. Not to knock a great program, but Purcell during the Roger Staubach era (I think undefeated his senior year), and Roger Bacon during the Bron Bacevich era (4 undefeated teams) both had teams, had there been playoffs, that might have been been the best teams in the state.

And for those wondering where the best football in the state is played, let's start with qualifiers. I'm only counting D1 programs, even though a select few D2 programs, like LaSalle last year, could make a valid claim to being better than the D1 champ.

NW Ohio has 2 titles (Lima and St. Francis)
Central Ohio has 3 titles (Hilliard 2, UA 1)
SW Ohio has 19 titles (Mo 9, X 3, Princeton 3, Elder 2, Colerain 1 and FF 1)
NE Ohio has 21 titles (Iggy 11, Eds 3, McKinley 3, Warren Harding 2, Warren Western Reserve 1, Cardinal Mooney 1)

So Massillon was "state champs" 13 times when title was decided by the polls?
But not once when the title was decided on the field?

Does elder provide a video stream of the game?

Would be nice to watch the game online, so I can watch my Crusaders play tough and then ultimately get out coached in the end and lose.

The OHSAA shows the AP champs dating back to 1947, after the Paul Brown era (1932-1940). Perhaps the AP goes back further than what the OHSAA shows. During the 1947 to present, I only count 13.

http://ohsaa.org/Portals/0/Sports/Re...lChampions.pdf

However, I did find this gem on the Massillon website:

http://massillontigers.com/massillon...all-history-2/

There, they boast of 24 state championships and 9 national championships. However, they have zero playoff era championships. If there's any Massillon fans reading this thread, they should read the link above unless they've already done so. One of my favorite stories was about a 1945 game against Cleveland Cathedral Latin played in front of 57,000 fans at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. And tOSU coach Earl Bruce was a Tiger head Coach along with the legendary Paul Brown (tOSU, Browns, Bengals).

And we should change this thread to "Massillon Tigers."

So those that have watched Moeller play the past few years, from that perspective, what is Moeller lacking?

Is it talent or is it coaching? I find it hard to believe it’s a talent level issue, but I just want to hear the opinions of those outside the program.

I’ve never seen my alma mater play this bad of defense over multiple seasons and I’m really not a young guy anymore.

Yes they do. It's run by the students, but it's a decent picture. Not sure who does the commentary or if there is any?

Happy Friday to all my fans out in Yappiville.

Does Big Brother (St. X.) take care of Little Brother (LaSalle) tonight at X?
Or do the Lancers put themselves in position to win a 2nd straight GCL title with a win?

And does Moeller get a long overdue (going on 3 years) win in the GCL?
Or can the Panthers defend their home turf and hope to play for a share of the GCL week 10 vs. LaSalle?

Elder is destroying Moeller. Surely Bittner will be the QB going forward? They are a different team with him in there.

LaSalle got exposed tonight! Something that was not as visable in the early weeks b/c they played 4 of 5 against an option or wing t team. If a team can throw the ball at all, they will put up points in LaSalle easily and I don't think they have the offense that is going to put up big numbers against decent competition. I really can't see this team making it much further than the 2nd round of the playoffs.
