The tailgating scene has (to my knowledge) always been an open secret at St. X. I don't ever remember there being any problems back in the day, but apparently that has changed. Seems there are a few who can't control themselves and are in danger of ruining it for everyone else.

I assume they will crackdown on it tonight and maybe at the start of next year, but if everyone behaves I'd imagine things will be more lax after that.

I don't see a problem with fans getting together and drinking a few beers before a game. I have never seen anyone from my kid's school get drunk while tailgating. Four or five beers is probably the most I've seen consumed. The people who make idiots of themselves are usually the sober parents.

Definitely a local decision. Honestly, it's sad to say but if you eliminate tailgating at a place like St. X or Elder attendance would fall. Many alumni go to hang out have a few beers with old friends then watch the game. The tailgates at many schools are as much a part of the reason for going to the games as the games themselves.

Jerk fans are Jerk fans whether they drink a couple beers or not.

Drunk fans are going to get drunk whether you allow tailgating or not.

Most people who don't make a spectacle out of their tailgate don't ever have a problem.

Always has been, always will be.

I say if your of legal drinking age and not intoxicated then you should be able to enjoy an adult beverage wherever you like. How is having a beer at a tailgate any different than having a beer during a family get together where there are kids present. Now as far as public schools where alcohol is prohibited on school property then that is a different story.

St. X is such a bunch of prudes. I can't believe they won't even let their cheerleaders wear skirts.

your topic and your poll don't match. the topic is alcohol at tailgates and the poll is tailgates only. We tailgate at every game and everyone who stops by is welcome and has a good time even sometimes people from the visiting team or friends from YAPPI. There is never any alcohol.

All St Xer's should take a knee while the rest of the GCL tailgates tonight to protest the brutal oppression they are facing by having their tailgate rights removed. oh boy!!!

If they start tailgating at 430 and the game is at 700, thatís more than a beer or two.

Permitted? - Yes, with simple restrictions.

Limit the time the parking lot is open pre-game. Control or deny any entry after halftime.

Sorry I screwed up assuming folks would understand I meant "tailgating with alcohol". University of Minnesota study on tailgating showed that only 8% of adults do NOT consume alcohol while tailgating at sporting events. Therefore I was speaking to the 92% of fans who do consume alcohol while tailgating. And yes, I'm well aware they weren't doing surveys of high school games.

Thanks to moderators for tweaking my thread title to include "with alcohol".

While I support it as a local decision, I fail to see why drinking on school grounds should be tolerated. Its a game between teenagers. Why the he11 drink over that? I drink, but there is a time and a place for that. The decorum of society is screwed up. To "socialize" among friends at a H.S. Game doesn't "need" alcohol. Save that for AFTER the game. Share some pizza ,wings and chili before the game. Have a coke, root beer, etc instead.

I donít like it but it should be allowed. If someone is acting like a fool, arrest them for public intoxication.

For those suggesting drinking on school grounds should be prohibited, how do you address the annual festivals? Why is that any different? And before this becomes a catholic issue, what about annual events like a sports stag/Vegas night held by the area public school where alcohol is served and students are working?

Believe me, if the schools could somehow make $$$$ off the beer and not open themselves up to attention and scorn, they'd do it.

I've no issue with tailgating before a high school game. In many situations (like Elder) the ability to spend time with family, see old friends, bond of food/drink is more appealing than the game for many.

Like anything, the issue is moderation. No one should be arriving more than two hours before the game. No one should be allowed to walk around with open containers. Don't flaunt it. Put it in a cup. No one should be getting drunk. And lastly, absolutely no one should be leaving at halftime for the sole purpose of drinking one or two beers at the car.

99% of people tailgating are not a problem. Deal with the 1%

Alcohol consumption on school grounds? We're even debating this? If you need a buzz, try the local tavern for your pregame and drive over before the kick.

I've always wondered why Ohio has such outdated laws about liquor sales. Now I know. Sweet goodness.

I don't participate myself, but that doesn't mean I want it banned from people who do it responsibly.

Itís only against the law if itís on school property. If itís on private property like a church parking lot adjacent to the school then itís not against the law.
