Copley: Mastrangelo - gave up 2 hits and 4 runs in 4+ innings.
Tallmadge: Burick - gave up 3 hits and 0 runs in 6 innings.

Copley starter gave up a couple of runs on two errors. The other two were off a hit, some walks, and a sac fly. Tallmadge got 6 hits and 5 runs off the relief pitchers over the last 3 innings.

MaxPreps had Copley 8th in Ohio D1 before this game. That will certainly change.

Overall bad game for Copley. Bats went cold all together, number of errors and defensive plays that weren't made and 4 pitchers had to walk at least 10 batters. Hopefully they got the "bad blow-up" out of their system and get back to playing the type of baseball this group is accustomed tonight at Highland.

The fact is that Copley has one dominate starting pitcher who can beat any team at any time, one senior with varsity experience who has proven he can win games, but also has struggled with control, and a bunch of inexperienced arms, other than Moses. The key factor is whether or not Moses can work his way back into pitching shape, and become the solid #2 they will need down the road. He threw 1 1/3 last night vs. Tallmadge for his first stint on the mound this year. Obviously, he was somewhat rusty, but at least he got some work in. With the games starting to back up, having multiple pitching options obviously would be beneficial, but at least having a big two can make a huge difference in league play. Tallmadge has solid and deep pitching, which should benefit them throughout the balance of the season. Now both teams need to avoid any slip up against some of the bottom teams in the conference.

Don't sleep on Highland. I think most were looking at Copley, Tallmadge, Aurora to be contenders for the league.

Highland has at least (4) pretty good arms and some good athletic players that swing the bats. They have played some decent competition already on the season and have faired well.

With Hays and Mastrangello unavailable to pitch today against Highland, would be curious how Copley fairs today and who they throw.

To the pitchers defense lastnight, HP ump was very inconsistent with balls and strikes for both sides.

The Hornets have a double-header with Green on Saturday, before the second game with Copley on Monday. It will be interesting to see what they save for Monday. If Highland wins today, do they go for the kill on Monday, or are they content to split ?

I'm guessing the Highland coach is aware that Hays will be pitching Monday, so I think the Highland coach will plan accordingly. This is the game they have to win because Copley is down to their 3rd starter.

If I'm Highland, old rivalry or not, I don't burn pitching on Green Saturday. I take the "BP" and try to knock out Copley on Monday, Hays or not. I expect Highland to win today. If they don't, it's obviously a different story.

If they go up 4 or 5 early, they have to think about it if there is a substantial difference in their pitchers, right ?

Not sure on the count rule, but if the #1 goes into late innings today, he'd need a few quick outs to be eligible Monday.

2017 OHSAA Baseball Pitch Count Regulation

Daily Pitch Limit: 125 pitches
Number of Days Between Pitching Appearances After Pitching:
1-30 Pitches: 0 days
31-50 Pitches: 1 day
51-75 Pitches: 2 days
76 or More Pitches: 3 days
Doubleheader Note: If a pitcher throws at least 31 pitches in a game, he may not pitch in another game that day (or the next day, per the chart above).
At Bat Completion: If the daily pitch count is reached during an at bat, a pitcher may exceed the pitch count only to finish pitching to the current batter.
Data Collection System: At the end of each contest, coaches must submit pitcher data to a designated data collection system. Schools are required to keep pitch count data on all pitchers and make the data available to the OHSAA upon request.
Regulation Violation: A team shall forfeit any victorious contest in which a player violates the pitch count regulation.
Suspended/Interrupted Games: All pitches thrown during a game that becomes suspended or interrupted (due to weather or darkness, for example) shall count toward the pitch count regulation.
Scrimmages and Previews: All pitches thrown in a scrimmage or preview shall count toward the pitch count regulation.

Copley Highland game was 3-2 thru 5 1/2 innings. Copley pitchers allowed 7 walks, and 6 hit batsmen. Been a problem early on for Copley, just way to many free passes and second chances. Highland pitching looks solid and deep, but they only had 5 hits against a trio of inefficient Copley pitchers, with only one extra base hit. Highland tried to run early on, but got two quick outs via steal attempts, which took them out of their game plan. Unless Highland just had a bad day with the bats, don't see how they will have much luck vs Hayes on Monday. Look forward to the Highland Tallmadge series the end of the month. Think as things stand now, Tallmadge look to have the better bats, with both teams having quality hurlers. Should go a long way toward determining each teams fate in the conference.

Tallmadge/Barberton game was close early (2-0) going into the 4th. Tallmadge had a big inning. After that, it was never really in contention. Barberton's starter was decent but struggled with control in the 4th. The Barberton relievers struggled to get outs. Tallmadge batted 10 straight in the top of the 5th before getting an out.

Tallmadge 2 0 0 5 8 2 -- 17
Barberton 0 0 0 3 4 0 -- 7

Nordonia has a game with Highland, too. If Highland beats Nordonia by more than 4, does that mean Highland is even better ?

Tallmadge was trailing GlenOak 6-1 early in the game after some sloppy baseball. Then it was GlenOak's turn to play some sloppy baseball as Tallmadge came roaring back to take the lead and win going away.

GlenOak . 0 5 1 0 1 0 0 -- 7 - 6 - 3
Tallmadge 1 0 2 8 0 3 . -- 14-13 -1
