why? Other than Castillo no one else really grabbed the bull by the horns. Shoot, Price stated that Finnegan, who pitched a handful of innings and Disco, who didn't pitch at all and Bailey, who was monumentally bad will all be in the rotation if they are healthy. That's how bad the young arms pitched last year. I'd say Travieso has as good a shot as the rest of them.

This pretty much guarantees Travieso will be the Redís next ace.

Wow. You mean a pitcher who was in Double A in 2016 and didn't pitch at all in 2017 isn't on the 40 man roster?! This is shocking news!

The Reds front office should hire 14Red. Hear what he has to say and do the exact opposite. We'd have a World Series in no time.

Not heard a whiff from anyone with the Reds about Travieso, other than he's been hurt. Would be great if he came back, but at this point I believe alot of guys have passed him.

The Reds today bolster the bullpen signing 32 year old journeyman Jared Hughes. He was with the Brewers last season, the Pirates six years previous. He is the definition of middle relief. Over the last 4 seasons, apparances 63, 76, 67, 67 and innings 64, 67, 59 and 59. Only 3 major league saves so he does not finish games. He's been in our division and I honestly don't remember him, but he's been pretty effective. Good signing!

He has a career ERA of 2.85. Past two years has posted 3.02 and 3.03 ERAs. Solid numbers and only a 4.5 million dollar 2 year deal with a club option for a 3rd year.

Looks like a solid pick up. I suspect he'll be around for his 2 years, then gone. Nice stats for his career.

Most middle relievers don't finish games that's why their middle relief.

Yes it is, and Dick Williams most likely isn't done. I think he'll find guys like this out there at a decent price. The Reds are not going to go all in and throw a ton of money at a name. Guys like this can be found in some of the smaller market teams where they simply can't pay top dollar for their entire roster.

My only concern with Hughes, is that with those stats, and his track record, what do we not know? You would think the Brewers would have wanted to keep him, unless they have a bunch of bullpen guys. Guess we'll all find out together.

Very true. Also, they did not use 32 year old journeyman middle relief guys when they built Rome. As Houston and the Cubs re-built, no one cared about the 32 year old bullpen guys they signed short-term.

Reds sign journeyman Vance Worley to a minor league contract. Worley's been with...most recently, the Marlins, Orioles, Pirates, Twins and Phillies. 30 years old. Been a relief pitcher mostly the last 3 years, started 17 games for the Pirates in 2014, easily his best season.

In other news, Scooter Gennett has turned in his uniform #4, for #3 moving forward. Gennett initiated the change in numbers as he's always liked #3 because it was Dale Earnhart's number. So, now, will the Reds re-issue #4, who was worn for years by Brandon Phillips? Will the Reds hold onto 4 and possibly retire it someday?

Of course the Reds will re-issue #4. Why wouldn't they?

Brandon Phillips had a good run with the Reds. Good enough to retire his jersey? Not even close enough for a discussion about it.

I certainly don't need to debate it. If you think he belongs with:
Fred Hutchinson
Johnny Bench
Joe Morgan
Sparky Anderson
Barry Larkin
Dave Concepcion
Pete Rose
Big Klu
Frank Robinson
Tony Perez

Go for it.

Pretty difficult to break that list of players. But as I said, at least debatable. Phillips is largely known as the franchises 3rd best 2nd baseman of all time, behind Joe Morgan and some guy named Bid McPhee, who played in the late 1800's. So I'm going to move Phillips past him simply because baseball was so much different 100+ years ago. I'll admit I didn't see Joe Morgan play everyday, I did see him play some. Joe was certainly and all-star more for his bat than his glove. That's not a knock on him defensively, because he was such a great offensive player in a time when 2nd basemen simply did not hit. Actually, if Phillips played for most other franchises, his offensive numbers would put him in the top spot for most franchises. I know that makes some of you cringe, but think about guys like Larry Bowa and Frank White, two long time all star 2nd basemen with their respective franchises, Phillies and Royals. Phillips numbers far surpass them.
But the real reason Phillips can also be considered is that I don't know that you can name another 2nd baseman in the last 20 years who has been better defensively than BP. Routinely in the top 10 plays on a nightly basis, Phillips has made 106 errors in 16 major league seasons. And incredible number.

Lastly, you don't tend to retire numbers solely based on stats. Phillips seemingly did anything the club asked, including batting in nearly every spot in the batting order, many times batting in the 3 or 4 hole, or even lead off, places where he probably didn't belong, yet he produced in most cases. He's also PLAYED, he's rarely in 16 years, missed any long stretches, and played hurt for at least parts of two seasons that I can specifically recall. He had a thumb issue years back that really hurt his batting, but he worked through it and his numbers suffered.

Finally, to close my case, I'm sure many of you will bring up the CTrent rant, some of his other surlyness, and those are all valid. But I think you'll also be hard pressed to name any other Reds in history that don't have a number retired who has the criteria that BP does. I rest my case.
