Believe me, if the schools could somehow make $$$$ off the beer and not open themselves up to attention and scorn, they'd do it.

I've no issue with tailgating before a high school game. In many situations (like Elder) the ability to spend time with family, see old friends, bond of food/drink is more appealing than the game for many.

Like anything, the issue is moderation. No one should be allowed to arrive more than two hours before the game. No one should be allowed to walk around with open containers. Don't flaunt it. Put it in a cup. No one should be drinking getting drunk. And lastly, absolutely no one should be leaving at halftime for the sole purpose of drinking one or two beers at the car.

99% of people tailgating are not a problem. Deal with the 1%
Well said. In my case I usually show up shortly after 6pm for the 7pm kickoff. Grab a bite to eat, have one or two beverages then head in for kickoff. I feel at Elder it's a lot more of a social event as opposed to people getting drunk and drinking in excess. I'm sure there have been a handful that have crossed the line, but like you said 99% are fine. It's the 1% that needs to be dealt with and usually ruins it for everyone.

I own what I posted. I added a request that would clarify the post of yours which I quoted. Nothing more.

I believe the more responsible schools prohibit students being put in that position.

I don't equate 1 or 2 beers with getting a buzz.
Like most things, I'll bet the problem comes from a small percentage of the tailgaters.

Personally I used to have a drink before the games in the parking lot. We used to dump some pepsi out of the 20oz bottle or whatever and fill it back up with something else. We never got smashed or made it obvious what we were doing.

The Louisville crowd tailgated pretty regular 2007 to 2011. It started off with mainly food and a few adults very discreetly drinking. A small group of people and over time it grew and grew.
We had one of the biggest tailgates in Massillon during the state playoff run. People were there all day drinking like fish. It looked the muni lot, open containers everywhere.

I stopped in 2009 when the mansfield cops started going into people's rvs at away games opening coolers and putting cuffs on people. We had the reputation for drinking at games and the cops caught on.

I know Carrolton has a VIP part of their stadium and adults may drink discreetly.

Personally I do not think it is a good mix, High schools do not have the security professional stadiums do, so I would never say a school should allow it. It puts the coaches, players, and refs at risk.

I say the President of St X should "build a wall" in the parking lot. Tailgating on one side, boring folks on the other side.

On the "fun" side of the wall you might as well allow pot smoking too. Why not? Let's throw gun possession and trading in there too to make it more fun. Might as well go Full ATF on the party. And the kids should be allowed to participate. I'll bet you could convince some hookers to show up and REALLY make it a good time.

St X alums (myself included) were just advised by the school that tailgating (with alcohol) in the school parking lot will no longer be tolerated due to a few idiots.

So what's your opinion?
Do you tailgate with friends and foes before high school games?
Or do you feel tailgating and high school games don't mix?
just like smoking is prohibited. If you need alcohol to enjoy a HS game, then don't go!

The OHSAA prohibits the sale, distribution or or consumption of alcoholic beverages at the site of any contest involving HSAA member schools.

The schools that allow this are complicit to any issue that arises related to this and are playing with fire by doing so.

I stopped working youth basketball 20 years ago because schools were selling alcohol at their events and I stopped working youth football 10 years ago because the tailgating got out of hand.

That could be true. I only made a suggestion following the comment if someone needs a buzz, they should try the local tavern for pregame and drive over before the kick.

Dude you are messing up a perfectly good tailgate....ssshhh.
What do you think the RV's are for?
You think those Cousin Eddie guys are showing up at 3:30 just to stake out a tailgate spot?

This is "Pope's Pick" for my favorite post. Makes me very nervous that I agree with the thoughts of an Elder guy!

Confronted at our cars by a group of dad's who had a few too many....

Took two weeks for the tailgating to resume....that coincided with my final youth game as well.

Already have enough "fans" in the stands who are obnoxious. Why loosen them up more with a few drinks?

This is a private school issue.....

No public school can publicly condone this (even though it goes on almost everywhere)

......And to all of you private holy rollers who say (no alcohol on school property) then go ahead and shut down your bingo's and multiple school functions that include such vices.

Nothing to see hear folks. Throw out the hell raisers and bad apples and problem will be solved.

I could be wrong however I am fairly certain these church festivals and other similar events with alcohol involved on school property are being held with out a liquor license.

So how is it any different?
