So maybe now is the time to bring this up. What about the big Catholic schools in Ohio creating a football league and play each other every year. LaSalle could participate too. This would include the big schools in Cleveland, Toledo and Cincinnati. That would give them a guaranteed 6 or 7 games. Then they can fill in with schools that have no fear like Colerain, Winton Woods, Mentor, etc. What does everybody think? This could clear up the schedule problems all these schools have every year.

I reported that a deal was in place for Winton Woods to join the SWOC.The majority of superintendents approved it, but athletic directors in a couple districts pushed back. Arvie Crouch even threatened to step down at My. Healthy over the matter. So a couple of superintendents caved (not Mt. Healthy tho) and the deal died. So nothing will change next season but possibly 2019.

That is too bad. Forest Park and Mt. Healthy was quite a rivalry when I was a kid. In fact I remember one game at Mt Healthy where Forest Park was really late to arrive. Like it was kick off time and Forest Park had not arrived yet. Then the Forest Park buses showed up and out came the players fully dressed and ready to play. That was something else.

The Louisville and Indy schools are closer to the Cincy schools than Toledo or Cleveland, makes friday games viable.

Great point. LaSalles should be a good enough program now that they can hang with those two.

Won't happen. Elder and Moeller play both Cleveland Catholic now. Elder had it lucky hand has only one 250 mile trip per yer. That trip is harder than you think and the Cleveland schools would have to do it twice a year. Not going to happen.

I certainly don't speak for them, but I think St Edward would do it. They played in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Indiana this year. They've gone to New Jersey and Philadelphia as well in recent years. I'm sure they'd love to play more Cleveland area teams, but you end up playing where you get games. Other than X not regularly being on the Ed's schedule (they are at times) I've considered St Edward to be a stepchild member of the GCL South. St Edward fans really respect the GCL South and love the games in Cincy. I'm going to guess that Iggy fans feel the same way, especially since they have a more natural connection to X. And there's always the possiblility of playing in Columbus as has happend with Iggy and Moeller. And Ed's is now playing Indianapolis Cathedral Prep. Cath. Prep is once again a Holy Cross school, so it's likely that relationship will continue. For a "so called" mega conference (Provided the OHSAA would allow the travel) I don't think St Edward would have a problem scheduling and going to Louisville. Of course, the scholastic responsibilities of the students comes first. So you'd have to have a system to balance the travel, but if it could be done with Saturday games and in a responsible way, its a great experience for young people to travel and gain some life experience.

Along the lines of this discussion, it would be interesting to have an event either in Columbus or one that rotated in Cleveland and Cincinnati (maybe Toledo also) where a doubleheader is played. But since there are 4 Cincy schools and 2 Cleveland schools it makes it a little tough. Also St Xavier and St Ignatius have specific things they do when they play in the Jesuit Bowl, so you wouldn't want to change much there.

For instance:
Play a doubleheader on a Saturday at 3pm and 7pm in Cleveland at John Carroll or UC in Cincinnati.
Elder vs. St Edward
Moeller vs. St Ignatius

Or just have the schools meet in Columbus and play at a school like Wittenberg just Moe and St Ignatius did Friday night.

I think that if all the schools involved knew that they were playing each other, they could include it in the travel schedule/budget. For example, I think X and Iggy's stay the night before the game and then drive back afterwards. The reason X does not play Ed's has to do with travel also. But I know the Cleveland schools have big problems scheduling games. Heard a few years ago that one of big sport's shoe/apparel companies wanted to create a football league with teams from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey to try and alleviate the scheduling/competition problems. Look down south and out west with the Aquinas's and Bishop Gormans of the world. I think something like that might be coming our way if the scheduling does not get any easier.

A few years ago I ran the Math for the Super league with the Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Louisville Catholics.

Here are the numbers for average travel.

Moeller 105.08
Elder 106.1857
Cincy X 104.17
LaSalle 105.55
Lou X 164.4
Trinity 157.71
Iggy 239.35
Eds 236.5

When Louisville St X would play Ignatius one school would be driving 350 miles.

When you add in that Kentucky has district games that would account for at least 3 games for Trinity and X, I don't see this happening.

Valid points, but those could be overcome by picking a mutually agreed site in Columbus or Dayton and reducing the travel distance considerably. There's talk in another thread that Columbus Crew stadium may become available.

As far as the conflicts with existing local schedules, the 8 listed teams would play 7 league opponents so there woud still be room for those 3 games in a 10 game season. If there are more conflicts you could have certain teams not play each other in certain years. For example, I don't think everyone in the Big Ten plays every team each year. You could have a staggard schedule system.

It's just something to talk about. And again, I think the big consideration is the impact on academics. If they can be minimized and in the end enhance the high school experience positively it may be doable.

It's at least worth a discussion.

My point about the big Catholic schools playing each other has as much to do about level of competition as anything. Sometimes when they Cincy teams go to Indy, those teams are not up to par. Sometimes the KY are the same way. But the Cleveland and Cincy teams are fairly consistent year after year.

Pope's Tip of the Year -
Sat Dec 2nd - for football fans who've never been, the B10 championship game is held at Lucas Oil in Indy. Usually a great game, with a fun atmosphere, in a fabulous venue! Put it on your bucket list. It's well worth the trip!

Sorry, I got worn down on my "tailgating thread" defending heavy drinking before high school games. May take a while for me to get back to my normal endearing insults.....

You've got to give ReLoad a little bit of slack. He has a lot to keep track of and sometimes he forgets which screen name he is posting under.
