2017 U23 World Team Trials

Thought I'd put some thoughts down on the U23 trials this weekend. Bunch of Ohio guys going, including some Ohio State studs. Not really sure who is gonna show up, but I'm going off who is registered on Track.

57kg: Ohio State's Nathan Tomasello is the favorite here, but I'm really excited to see Oklahoma State freshman (and Junior world champ) Daton Fix wrestle. Alex Mackall, Gage Curry, Gary Harding, and Timmy Lambert are other names from the college scene you might know that are entered.

61kg: Only six entries here right now, with Junior silver medalist Mitch McKee the favorite to me. NCAA qualifier Josh Terao is also here

65kg: New Ohio State 141 pounder Joey McKenna is the favorite here, and I am excited to see him wrestle freestyle (he has a junior silver medal in his past). All-American Jaydin Eierman, NCAA qualifiers Brock Zacherl and Colton McCrystal, and freestyle specialist Robbie Mathers are also here.

70kg: A weight with some depth, including three All-Americans in Anthony Collica, Lavion Mayes, and Tyler Berger. Also interested in Steve Bleise and Richie Lewis, with Ohio's Josh Heil also entered. Would love to see Collica win this weight

74: There are two entries in this weight, but are they good: it's Isaiah Martinez vs Chance Marsteller. IMar beat him I believe at universities last year, but don't count Chance out. Healthy, motivated Chance Marsteller can hang with the best wrestlers in the USA- he is that skilled

86kg: Four All-Americans, including some studs here. Brett Pfarr is making the drop, with Sammy Brooks, Myles Martin, and Nate Jackson as the top four. Sammy Brooks has a Cadet bronze medal and a junior world team appearance, so I think he is the favorite

97kg: Former Ohio standout and VT All-American Ty Walz is here and is probably the favorite. Other nice names are Nikko Reyes and Riley LeFever

125kg: Only six guys entered here, and Michael Kroells is the only All-American. I think Mikey Kosoy can give him a run for his money.

All together, a group of Tomasello, McKee, McKenna, Collica, IMar, Brooks, Walz, and Kroells would be okay with me. As the event gets bigger, hopefully more names attempt to make their team, but for the first year of U23s this isn't a bad group.

No men's freestyle until tomorrow. I'll update pretty regularly then.

Okay, into the semis.

57kg: Tomasello 10-0 tech over Gage Curry, faces Timmy Lambert in the semis. Daton Fix has two techs, including Alex Mackall, and will wrestle Joshua Rodriguez

61kg: McKee-Robbins, Jimenez-Terao

65kg: McKenna into semis vs Clarion's Brock Zacherl (rematch of wrestle-off for 2015 junior world team spot). Boo Lewallen has Jaydin Eierman in a good match on the bottom

70kg: Collics two close wins, faces Richie Lewis in semis. Berger vs (Grant) LaMont in other semi; Josh Heil went 0-2, losing to Berger and Bleise

86kg: Myles Martin 2-0 into semis, faces Jaron Smith who beat Nate Jackson. Brett Pfarr vs Sammy Brooks in semis as well, which is a good one.

97kg: Ty Walz vs LeFever, Dan Chaid vs Nikko Reyes

125kg: Mikey Kosoy vs Hemida, Goodhart vs Kroells.

Semis:

57kg: Tomasello vs Fix in the finals after Nate techs and Fix wins 8-3. I'm so excited for this one. Might be the first of many battles over the next cycle

61kg: Mitch McKee vs Isaac Jimenez, who has surprised me today. Might be a good match

65kg: Joey McKenna will take on Boo Lewallen, who beat Eierman 11-5. Lewallen just beat Mathis and Eierman and may not start for Okie State, which shows how crazy their lineup is gonna be and how wild it is that Okie State is gonna finish 3rd at NCAAs.

70kg: Berger will face Richie Lewis after Lewis beat Collica 10-3.

86kg: Myles Martin vs Sammy Brooks in the finals. Myles beat Jaron Smith (who I will be keeping an eye out for this year since I hadn't heard of him before today) and Brooks beat Pfarr 4-0

97kg: Ty Walz posted a good win over LeVefer, and Danny Chaid beat Reyes 6-6. Chaid a guy I'll be looking at this year too in a weak 197

125kg: Kroells vs Hemida in the finals.

Most excited for 57, 65, 74 (Chance vs IMar), and 86

Finals (they aren't in order btw), which are best of 3:

65kg match 1: McKenna beats Lewallen 5-1

125kg match 1: Kroells techs Hemida 10-0

61kg match 1- McKee techs Jimenez 11-0

86kg match 1: Brooks beats Myles Martin 9-5

74kg match 1: Martinez over Marsteller 8-2

97kg match 1: Ty Walz beats Danny Chaid 8-1

70kg match 1: Richie Lewis beats (upsets?) Tyler Berger 6-2

57kg match 1: Daton Fix OVER Nathan Tomasello 8-7. I'm following on Track, it was 9-8 Tomasello for a minute and I think a takedown was waived off

61kg match 2: McKenna beats Lewallen 8-4 to take it. Excited to see Lewallen if he wins the 149 spot for them

125kg match 2: Kroells beats Hemida 9-4, he wins both easily

61kg match 2: McKee techs Jimenez again, this time 15-4. Great summer/fall for him

97kg match 2: Walz wins 10-0 over Chaid, he'll make his first world team at any level

57kg match 2: Fix beats Tomasello again 7-4, confirming what I believed: this dude could be our rep next year at senior worlds

70kg match 2: Richie Lewis is the real deal, beats Berger again (7-1)

86kg match 2: Sammy Brooks too much for Myles, beats him 13-6

74kg match 2: IMar wins 7-6 over a game Chance.

Trials done. All series went two matches. Fix-McKee-McKenna-Lewis-IMar- Brooks-Walz-Kroells is the team, interested to see how good this event is.

What's crazy is that Okie State may not even take 3rd. As much as I dislike Michigan, that school up north is gonna be good this year.

Okie State will have great (NQ or AA) backups at 125, 133, and 141.

I'll show my ignorance (and perhaps laziness) ...

Without looking up Ok St's lineup, with all the talent they have in the low weights, is there no thought (or possibility) of pushing one or more people up one weight in order to get one more of these guys in the lineup?

I suspect that both Fix and Picinnini have quite a challenge making 125, and I suppose that's probably the case for a couple of the others in the weights in question. Is Smith at 157 the "lid" that prevents such a move??

If it's simply "not possible" then how long do the ones left out stick around?

The "lid" on Okie St's lineup is actually probably Dean Heil. Heil isn't going to bump to 149- he's a two time champ at 141 and has little shot against Zain. Their lineup is really good too- Piccinnini, Brock, Heil, Martinez (or Lewallen), Smith, and Rogers are their first six wrestlers and are all All-Americans.

I don't think Fix really struggles to make 125- he probably could have made 50kg last year and I don't think he struggles to make 57kg (he made 55kg at juniors).

Redshirting Fix makes sense for one main reason- doing so allows Fix, Piccinnini, and Brock to wrestle four years. Fix redshirts this year, Heil graduates, Brock goes to 141 next year, and Fix/Piccinnini take 125 and 133 in some order.

I don't think Fix makes 50kg very easily. I believe the last time he was there was in 2013 @ FILA Cadets when Spencer Lee teched him. Not sure what weight he wrestled in 2014, but in 2015 Lee and Fix faced each other at UWW Cadet Nationals at 54kg with Fix beating Lee. Lee subsequently dropped down to 50kg for Juniors and won Worlds while I believe Fix took Bronze at 54kg Cadets that year.

So Fix hasn't seen 50kg in quite some time. His walk around weight is probably 135-140lbs.

0 chance Fix even comes close to making 50 kilos imo. He's a very good sized 25 who imo may grow out of it in the next couple years.

No, I don't think he can make 50kg now, but I don't think he struggles to make 57kg, which is 125ish. I just think he can stay at 125 for a while

Any details on the scoring breakdown of the Tomasello/Fix matches. While both are outstanding on their feet, I feel Fix has a much more varied offense. Fix scores from the top position in FS, much better than Tomasello. This upcoming cycle is interesting with Gillman, Fix, Tomasello, and Lee.

I think #6 ranked McKenna's stock rises somewhat with this showing. #4 Eirman got teched by Lewallen, who McKenna beat 2x. And word on the street is that #5 Ashault may not wrestle this year due to injury.

And NaTo's stock slips slightly, but still #1. Fix likely RSs this year along with Spencer Lee. But this loss kind of puts him more in the mix with the top few 125s like Cruz and Suriano, rather than a step ahead of these two.

MyMar was solid, losing only to Brooks, who graduated.

Just read about it. He’ll be out until January. Apparently happened during championship round with Fix.

He won the first match with a head pinch in the closing seconds. I saw on a forum that he was losing the 2nd match until the last minute of the match, can someone provide details on how he scored his 8 points?
