D VI State Championship: Kirtland (14-0) vs Marion Local (13-1)

Rematch of 2015 and 2017 title games, which they split. Who wins this one?

Marion Local, by a fairly wide margin. Worse than last year I believe

Marion's high-octane balanced offense (kind of pass heavy at times) vs Kirtland's excellent power running game.

Similar to last year except ML is noticeably smaller at many positions in its defensive front seven (particularly at the d ends - they're much lighter than last year's behemoths) and might struggle a lot to slow down the Hornets' punishing ground attack.

I believe this game will definitely be closer than last year. Marion will win if they can hold Kirtland to three scores, but ML might not be able to do that.

ML should be slightly favored, but I believe Kirtland will play with a tremendous level of focus and intensity (after so many things went wrong for them in the game last year), and I will not be surprised by a Kirtland victory.

Go Flyers!!

I think Kirtland can win by winning the time of possession. Keeping ML’s offense off the field. I’m predicting another grind it out game. Kirtland 34 ML 27

^^^ Dang - was hoping for a Sat game (even though the chance of that was slim). I don't want to take off work, but I may just do that.

Marion Local has made the D6 final all 4 years since making the move from D7. They've played CVC teams all four years. Cuyahoga Heights once and now a third game with Kirtland. Marion Local had more rushing yards than Kirtland in the 2017 game but that is unlikely to happen this time. If Bruns is on his game I'd give a slight edge to MSML. Flyers have an opportunity to match St. Ignatius in state titles with a win here.

Do you see why the games belong in a central location now?

Kirtland is looking to go .500 VS the MAC at 3-3.

The MAC has played 126 different schools in the playoffs and Kirtland would be the 11th to go .500 VS the MAC.

108 have losing records and
8 have a winning record against the league. (4 of those were 20 plus years ago since they last faced the league).

With that said, it is Kirtland's year as this has been their end game since losing last season.

Hornets 27
Flyers 13

Flyers need to pass block much better vs Kirtland than they did tonight, Bruns was sacked and rushed more tonight than maybe in any game all season. Also weather will be a key, ML has not played well in rainy conditions. I am hoping for decent weather and because I am a homer for ML, going with the Flyers 42 to 38.

How does this Kirtland team compare to teams of the past that have won a tittle? It doesn’t get much better this game. Two historically great coaches that have always done it right the way. This is going to be a hell of a game. I would give the slight edge to Marion Local but haven’t seen much of Kirtland this year.

This team is the best in the past four years (Ď15-Ď18). Those teams from (Ď11-Ď14) were just awesome to watch. Nevertheless, this yearís team could give those teams from 2011-14 a game, but donít think theyíd beat them. How does this ML team compare to other teams since 2015?

It is difficult to compare teams but I will give it a try. I know you said from 2015 but I will go back to 13. ML's best team since than was the 2014 team maybe ML's best team ever. This years team maybe compares to the 2013 team that had Adam Bertke at QB, although the 13 team probably had a better running game and run defense than the current Flyer squad.

If you were to guess, are they above average compared to the other teams since Ď13 or below average? I understand itís hard to gauge, but just have a guess at it. Since Ď11, this Hornets team fits right in the middle.

If this team is better then those teams then they can defiantly win this game. Those Kirtland teams 2011-2014 were special. Good luck to both teams! Marion Local fans, how does this team compare to years past? Iíve seen a couple of their games on replay and it seems like they arenít as good on defense but the offesnse is a typical ML team.

I think Bruns is the best QB theyíve had in a while. Donít know much about the players of their past, but thatís just what Iíd assume. 6í6, strong, mobile, gifted passer. What more could you ask for?

I'd agree. Pretty similar to the 2013 team. Just not as deep. The 2013 team lost Bertke to injury for several games and didn't really miss a beat, including a big win over eventual D5 champ Coldwater during Bertke's absence. If this team were to lose Bruns, I think the ship sinks. Fortunately the team has stayed very healthy this year.

John Tangeman was injured last night vs SE, if he can't go that is a big loss to the defense. Agree about Bruns.

And how would those teams compare to the early 2000 teams. Like the 2000 team that ended the DSJ winning streak I believe.

Injured on kick coverage after ML's last td. Hobbled off to sideline and never came back into the game, was not walking very good on the sideline.

2000 and 01 teams were more talented over all and physically bigger. However when a team has a QB like Bruns, he can make up for some deficiencies that you may have on offense.

Unbeaten leading up to the state championship game? Betting on the Kirtland defense grinding one out to bring another state championship back to Lake County. Go Hornets!

ML is pretty great but not to the level of greatness they typically are. Kirtland could take this one.
