WJ's 50 worst cities to live in America

The Wall Street Journal issued a list of the 50 worst cities to live in America. Much to my surprise, my native Cleveland only came in as fifth. Other Ohio cities to make the list were Youngstown, Canton, Dayton, and Toledo. My adopted city of Tucson was #31. The No. 1 worst city was, if you haven't guessed it already, was Detroit.

Surprised Dayton made the list. Springfield is probably too small to be considered but would hands down rival Detroit for the top spot, but suspect crime rate would put Detroit over the top.

Provide a link? I'd like to know criteria?

Regardless I hope they keep telling everyone the old rust belt is a miserable place to live so everyone keeps moving to wonderful Colorado and California.

I know one thing, it is dirt cheap where I live. My money goes a lot further here then it does for my counterparts across the country (making same $).

Dog food is cheap too. Doesn't mean I'm going to pretend it's preferable to a steak.

Frankly, I don’t believe the writers at WSJ have any idea what living in a Midwest city is like these days. More than likely the picture in their minds is from 10-15 years ago

I used to work in Dayton and I can say it has come a long way from the early 2000s when you would drive down Route 4 and it looked like Beirut. Out of the bigger cities in Ohio it and Youngstown should be on the list.

I believe I found the article he's referencing and here's the criteria they claim to be using: crime, economy, education, environment, health, housing, infrastructure, and leisure

Nope, pretty accurate as I'd rather eat dog food than live in most of the listed cities.

and just because it's cheap, doesn't mean its dog food.

We breed complainers up here, this is true. And they're complainers without solutions. They're complainers who left and complain from a distance. They're complainers who often were the source of the problems before they left.

But at the same time, the place isn't what it could be, the leaders are slow, in-bred and unlikely to listen to "out-siders," meaning someone not from the union or someone that has left, seen how the real world does it, came back. Problems fester, mostly because out-of-sight, out-of-mind or lack of imagination by people who have never gone somewhere where success had to occur without knowing someone. Like Cinci's Over the Rhine, maybe ours will make a come-back too but all the institutions, Art, Zoo, minor league sports are and have been pretty solid. Admittedly, the local higher educationals, cannot meet the standards of the three C's or even Dayton. But we march on.

But it's such a nice natural geographical location, life is good. Things that cost a fortune, even in the three C's, are cheap to free here. Gas, food, housing, entertainment.... Just careful dodging potholes as you get there.

The down side, as I've explained to foreign friends that think we Americans are all rich, because we can travel to their countries, have cars.... because it is so cheap here, our economics, salaries can be lower. We may save a larger proportion but still might not be able to put as much into bank and investment as someone "poorer" in a high economic zone.

and we're grossly obese.

Youngstown not being number 1 is a lot like the NBA MVP voting in 1997.

Karl Malone only got the award because they were tired of giving it to Jordan every year.

I think we all know who the real #1 is.

Have the WSJ writers ever been to even half of the cities on this list?

Lol Cincinnati made the list of top 15 cities for attracting millennials, not worst cities in the country to live.
