Friday Night Lights not just for football

My hat is off to Moeller for going head to head with varsity football on Friday night under the lights. These race are going to be run at the same time as high school football games and under the lights just like high school football. Moeller trying to show everyone that cross country deserves the same hype as football. Here is the Moeller Primetime meet schedule all run under the bright lights of Friday night. Congrats to Moeller.

Varsity Races UNDER THE LIGHTS

High School Varsity Girls Gold 5K Race 7:40pm (max 20 runners)

High School Varsity Boys Gold 5K Race 8:15pm (max 20 runners)

High School Varsity Girls Blue 5K Race 8:45pm (max 20 runners)

High School Varsity Boys Blue 5K Race 9:15pm (max 20 runners)

Good for them. I know the Centerville meet under the lights is a fun one to watch.

Two best boys programs in Cincy go at it in week one

St. Xavier and Mason went at it head to head with the Bombers edging the Comets by a mere three points. Results are here: http://live.finishtiming.com/#/resul...-xc/results/10

The one-two punch of St. Xaviers Joe Dugan and Matt Hoak is seen here. Photo of Geoff Blankenship for the Enquirer.

Destroy ......that's a bit dramatic, Lancermania. Ursuline was without their #1, no?

These early season meets don't mean a lot and not much should be read into them. It gives teams an okay idea of where they are now and where they need to go. I pegged Ursuline as a contender to Centerville last year and I was laughed at and essentially told that I was crazy. They were 2nd to the Elks at state, 15 points down on them (122 to 137). I'm not saying that Ursuline is a contender this year, as they did lose 2 of their top 5 to graduation, but a lot can change between now and late Oct/early Nov.

Sophomore Hope Erbach from Lebanon dominated the Girls Varsity D1 race. Led from about the half mile in and never looked back. Broke a few girls trying to keep her pace in the last 1/3 of the race. This time last year she was having surgery to fix severed tendons in her foot.

Only 4 competitions ever mattered a hill-of-beans to me when I coached; they were these in order:

#4 - League
#3 - District
#2 - Regional
#1 - State

Everything else was PRACTICE

Partly agree

#1- State
#2- Regional
#3- League/Conference
#4- District-

*never put much stock in the district meet. The only purpose is to qualify out and move on.
I could care less if we win or get second.

I understand placing League/Conference before the district meet, but given that it was only a week before District, the league/conference meet served basically the same thing. You're placing athletes in the correct events in order to achieve the maximum output. After district, the numbers get whacked down significantly and only the best get through. If you score more than 20 points at any regional, you've done really well.

For an experienced coach of a very good team this is true.

But to runners particularly ones that have never been on varsity that is not true. It is a big moment to finish your first 5k, run a PR or score for your team for the first time.
