I assumed he must have been a better football player in HS if he got a football scholarship to OSU ??

I remember Arnie Fontes off of the 1965 and 1966 Buckeye football team. He was a backup quarterback to Don Unverferth in '65 and hardly ever saw the field and then in '66 I'm thinking he was switched to either running back or a receiver and again hardly ever got in a game as I recall. I think Woody probably gave up on him as a QB with the arrival of Bill Long as QB in 1966 and Long lasted until Rex Kern arrived in '68 with the super sophs.

JB
Arnie did play as a RB in '66. He played in a total of 17 games in the 2 years at OSU.
He then left to finish his education else where. I sort of lost track after that, I was
busy working for Uncle Sam (USMC). His oldest brother (Wayne Fontes) was also a multi-star
athlete for McK (football/basketball/baseball) and later would eventually become
Head Coach of the NFL Detroit Lions.

Ted lives in California and plays golf with Arnie.

Wow, I actually knew one! Mr. Slippery knew it, too - the Jon Diebler answer.

May be of interest to some that James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt are at the Schott on June 30. I like both of them.

Bonnie Raitt inspired my outfit with my husband when we played in our duo, Charade. She likes tunic tops with tights/leggings, and I liked one I saw that she wore on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" in the early 80s. I made a sparkly black sheer short skirt and jacket, put a black leotard and tights underneath, and finished it off with the cutest black suede boots with silver buckles. I wore that for years until I couldn't fit it anymore because I was pregnant with our third child. I still have it somewhere.

Lots of information and more than a few "aha moments" for me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the info.

Very good guess, Zunardo, but you're off by about 5 miles (literally).

Diva, sorry that you didn't get a chance to answer the Jon Diebler question. After all the Upper games that you attended, that question was a given for you. Also, thanks for the info on James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt. That concert should be a good one.

Wow ohiopup, your post has blown me away. I figured that you were a huge McKinley fan, but I had no idea that you were an encyclopedia of Bulldog athletics. I'm sorry if I insulted your intelligence by posting the trivia about McK players in the NBA for 35-straight years. Knowing what I know now about your expertise in Bulldog history, that was an elementary piece of information. Sort of like asking a trigonometry student to add 2+2.

Your comments, as well as "JB's" words about Arnie Fontes, made me once again realize how important frame of reference is. I had totally forgotten about Arnie's football success because, to me, he'll always be that basketball player from McK who gave me "fits" on the court. I had also forgotten exactly what year it was that McK got the "death penalty" and did not play football for the entire season. Also, I didn't realize that Coach Branin was at McK when you were there. I always figured that the Branin Natatorium was named after a famous person who excelled in swimming, but didn't know where he was from or from what era. Not being from Canton, the name just never "rang a bell" for me. I should have known better with all the great swim teams the Bulldogs produced.

Thanks for posting the link to the McKinley sport information. Wow, lots of really good stuff on there. The biggest surprise for me was McKinley's girls' basketball coach. Over the years, I had read that McK coach Pam Davis was exceptional. In fact, I think she's close to some record number of wins at this time. Until your posting, I had no idea that Pam Davis was Pam Arnold. Pam Arnold played and excelled in women's hoops at Akron when I was coaching there in the mid-1980s. Learning that Pam Arnold Davis was the McK coach was certainly an "aha moment" for me. All these years and I never knew that the outstanding coach for the McK girls was the former Akron star that I knew back in the '80s.

Since SALT is your slogan/acronym, you have had a SUPER successful day. Providing the info you posted and making a "light bulb flash on in my head" a number of times certainly fulfills your goal for today. Thanks again!

I'll re-post the updated quiz before noon and then everyone will be permitted two more guesses.

ROCK ON!

21. The late Dave Sorenson was a great Buckeye who also played for the Cavs. He hit the bank shot against Kentucky AT Kentucky to send the '68 team to the Final Four.

He is the reason this thread exists and he was a Findlay Trojan.

6. The great Larry Seigfried's jersey hangs behind glass in the trophy case at the new Shelby High School.

Larry came to Upper a few times in the old NOL and put up anywhere from 40-60 against most foes, including the Rams. Had a really good career with those 60's Celtic championship teams, playing along side Havlicek. Of course, he played on the last OSU national championship team.

Glad you were able to get a couple of answers in before heading to work. You are correct on all three of your answers. You also spot-on about "Sunshine" being discussed when this thread started in 2001.

6. Larry Siegfried - Shelby
21. Dave Sorenson - Findlay
G. What Buckeye is the all-time leader in rebounds? Jerry Lucas (1411 rebounds)

#12 Kelvin Ransey - Toledo Macomber is correct
#15 Craig Barclay - Zanesville is incorrect, but you're within about 25-30 miles.

The updated answers are on Post 5016.

19. Jim Cleamons - Columbus Linden McKinley
15. Craig Barclay - Newark

Interesting that these two questions were first answered by the absolutely
arch nemesis of both players, lol.

(Columbus East and Zanesville) Both players ended up as teammates at OSU with
Barclay being a year ahead of Cleamons.

Good job in answering both #15 and #19:
19. Jim Cleamons - Columbus Linden McKinley
15. Craig Barclay - Newark

Also, your comment about the previous incorrect answers being the rival of the school in question is very interesting (as well as being in close proximity).

The update is on Post 5016. We still need to correctly answer the following questions:

At what Ohio high school did these OSU stars play?
2. Gary Bradds
3. Robin Freeman

Extra-Credit:
I. Who has the single-game OSU scoring record?
J. Who has the single-game OSU rebounding record?

How many attempts can we take?

I'll start with Bradds from Jamestown and Freeman from Springfield. ( I met Robin once; nice guy and he was an attorney.)

Nice job identifying Gary Bradds' hometown as Jamestown. Yes, he played at Jamestown Greenville. Robin Freeman played high school ball in SW Ohio, but not in Springfield. You are about 75-80 miles off.

2. Gary Bradds - Jamestown Greenview
3. Robin Freeman- Springfield is incorrect

After 4:00, you may have unlimited guesses, but still no goggling. We still need to correctly answer the following.

At what Ohio high school did these OSU stars play?
3. Robin Freeman

J. Who has the single-game OSU rebounding record?

I know Robin Freeman played his HS ball in Cincinnati, but can't remember which school.

Perhaps that will narrow it down and jog somebody's memory.

Bradds and Lucas in that order for I and J. I believe Gary B. scored over 40 points in 6,7or 8 straight games and that included the OSU single game high of 49.

Every Buck fan knows that the leading scorer for OSU in the second championship game with Cincy was Bradds with 15. Luke was ailing with something.

We've had a little activity on trivia quiz:

At what Ohio high school did these OSU stars play?
3. Robin Freeman - Cincinnati Hughes ("JB")
*Monclova Steve also knew that Freeman was from the Queen City

Extra-Credit:
I. Who has the single-game OSU scoring record? Gary Bradds 49 points (Bevo)
J. Who has the single-game OSU rebounding record? Jerry Lucas is incorrect

We only need extra-credit "J" to finish up this quiz. Anyone is permitted to answer, but please no googling.

Yes, that is a fast climb up the charts for the Buckeyes at #13. It's great that they are being noticed nationally. Two teams from the City of Cincinnati (#8 Xavier) and #(9 UC) are ranked in the Top 10. Also, WVU (with former UC coach Bob Huggins) is ranked #7. That's a whole lot of Ohio influence in this week's polls.

On the trivia quiz, we need to correctly answer only one more question.

J. Who has the single-game OSU rebounding record? Jerry Lucas is incorrect
