I bowled a 238 once. Generally I'm in the 150-175 range. Every so often I'll figure it out and flirt with 200, but 238 was my all time best. I'll never forget the score because I beat my friend who is a really good bowler for the first time in probably 100 games over the years.
My uncle bowled a couple 300 games and was very good, won a bunch of local stuff in Ohio on well oiled lanes. Qualified for the US Open and barely broke 250 in 1 match during the event, he heard about the demanding oil pattern, which differs from most oil patterns the PBA employs, but could not get his ball to find the pocket if his life depended on it. Also said the PBA pros were jerks and were not good sports with the amateurs when they bowled against them.
For some reason I wasn't nervous. I was seeing and hitting the 11th board cleanly and following thru every shot. Every single shot was dead in the pocket. Hit the first 8 in a row, the 9th one buried itself in the pocket, left the 4-10. Everyone said it was exactly where the others were, but probably just drove a little harder at the end.
202, probably around 15-16 years old. Like others, just a day when gravity was strong and ran off three could rounds, 201, 202, 180 with a straight ball. 160 ave.
I've a friend who by chance stubled upon a bowling tournament in Las Vegas. He was amazed at how many balls a pro bowler brings today. He asked one bowler and was told one ball was used only for the 10 pin and another ball was used solely for the 7 pin. The guy had six balls in all, carried in something like a rolling luggage carrier.

You would be blown away by the amount of variables to consider with every bowling shot. Probably more than golf, and they carry more clubs than bowlers do bowling balls.
