TV blew up, need new one.... any suggestions?

I've always had Sony TV's but just like everything what once use to be good is now crap. You know, why make something last when we can get them to buy new ones every 5 years..... well, my "newest" Sony which is about 10 years old blew up today, well, I think that is what happened as I heard a loud pop and then the picture went away and now the only thing that happens is a bit of a screeching sound..... I still have my older Sony still getting the job done but I need to start looking for a replacement.....

I do not need any fancy smart TV or 3D tv or anything like that.... just a 48 to 52 inch HD TV.... not looking to spend more than $500..... I was thinking an LG but any suggestions out there.....

thanks.....

When I've spent some money, I've gone Mitsubishi. They've been awesome. For my cheap TV's, I've gone with Vizio. I've had very few problems, and when you call them, you get English speaking help located in Southern California. The 1 thing about Vizio is, the model numbers will be almost the same but research them. The difference between a 55 alas and a 55 alat ( I made up these model #'s) can be very good speakers in one but not the other. All in all, they've been good "cheap" TV's.

I second Vizio. All my tvs are Vizio and I've never had any issues. Walmart usually has them for pretty cheap. You could probably get a 50 inch for 3-400.

Just go with whatever's cheapest. There's very little difference between brands nowadays when it comes to TVs imo. I got a 50" Toshiba at Best Buy for $199 back in November. Also have an older Westinhouse, both are working great so far.

A few years ago while I was waiting for large screen tvs to drop to my price range, I bought two 19" Insignias (Best Buy brand) - one for the bedroom and one for the office. At the time, I had little time for tv.

About eighteen months ago, I bought a large screen Insignia for about $250 -not on sale. Around 48", I believe. Given the rapid change in technology and relative quick drop in price from year to year, I agree cheap is more than good enough! If my tv implodes today, I will have gotten my money's worth already.

I have an older Sony that's been a workhorse and a newer Samsung. If I needed another, I'd stick with one of those two brands.

I'd keep watching the broken Sony. It's still better than 90% of the programming.

Samsung

Still love the old Panasonic plasma, though. Indestructible, still sharp and 100%.

I have a brand new NEC Multisync V422 just sitting in the garage corner. Vamps lives too far away though.

We splurged on an LG 65" OLED for the great room, an awesome TV, but everyone seems to just watch their iPads and phones anymore, so I don't recommend it.

I wouldn't spend over 500 for a TV. You'd be nuts to. You can get a good sized TV with all the bells and whistles for less than that

The 4K LG OLED TVs are some of the best available today--and priced accordingly.

We have a 47" LG smart TV at home and have been very happy with it. We paid a little extra to get a smart TV because based on the reviews I read, at the time LG put better LCD panels in their smart TVs than the non-smart TVs.

I've had the same Insignia 42" 720p plasma TV for 9 years. Still going strong, and is the main TV in my house still today. Clear picture, not overly contrast like some TVs today. Menu is super simple and easy to use. I really like my Insignia. I would recommend you look into reviews for Insignia. Not as big of a name as the others, but I'll definitely look Insignia first when I get a new TV in 10 more years.

ep is correct, all the entertainment shows in our house are on demand services viewed on some kind of mobile device with headphones. Only thing I watch communally on a traditional TV is sports and picture quality is nice but not important. We have a basic Vizio and it works fine.

It's funny that Yappi decided to go in and remove "dummy" from both of our posts.

Smart TVs are a good choice, but not a requirement as long as you have a WiFi-enabled DVD player or some kind of Fire Stick or Roku, etc. My non-smart TV is 9 years old, and my WiFi-enabled DVD player is 4+ years old, and we are a 100% streaming family -- Netflix, Sling, Plex, and WatchESPN, and by hooking up HDMI to our laptop and watching free episodes available online.

I don't compare prices often, but I have noticed that Sam's Club has some pretty good deals.
