Penn State Frat Death

Anyone following this case?

Quote:
It took 65 pages to detail how, over a span of 12 hours, a 19-year-old from New Jersey fell down a set of stairs, was left on a couch while others debated the seriousness of his injuries, and, tragically, died as a result.

Timothy Piazza, who grew up in Readington Township in Hunterdon County, died on Feb. 4 in a hospital after falling at a Penn State fraternity house on Feb. 2. He was pledging at the Alpha Upsilon chapter house of Beta Theta Pi, and that evening he and 13 others were taking part in a bid acceptance ceremony. It was supposed to be an alcohol-free fraternity, but it wasn’t.

A Pennsylvania grand jury investigation, detailed in the report, showed there was heavy drinking. There was hazing. And, in the morning and days after his fall, evidence of a cover up.

The fraternity and 18 of its members are facing many charges, including involuntary manslaughter, Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller announced Friday.

I read about this the other day. Pretty sickening, but hard to be surprised by it if you've been on a college campus anytime in your life. Frats are seriously bad for society IMO.

No surprise that it involved a Beta chapter, those guys are at the top of the list when it comes to this type of behavior.

As always, it depends. I'm sure Greek Life at an SEC school is way different than Greek life at OU or UC.

Obviously not all frats have bad culture, but a high majority of them do regardless of the school.

I'm torn since Xavier doesn't have Frats. I know guys who got into Frats strictly for networking, they were never serious about Greek Life. They even lived off campus with guys who weren't in Frats. I also know guys who went all in and acted like tools.

Career wise, it was a great move. Went to school with a lot of smart people and made a lot of contacts throughout the country through the fraternity. People who view it as a 4 yr social club are morons.

At many schools, Greek frats and sororities do a huge amount of philanthropic work.

Depends significantly on the school. At some small schools in remote locations, fraternities provide the campus' social life. Many/most join a frat for, essentially, social insurance. At these small schools, frats tend to be egalitarian...all are welcome at parties, for instance. At a big school, like OSU, fraternities appeal to a more exclusive crowd, a much smaller percentage of the whole and there are lots of social options available outside of the Greeks.

Had I gone to a large college, I wouldn't have joined a fraternity.

College is a perfect place for getting a network started. It may be bigger than the actual degree as far as how successful you will be.

All the B1G schools are trending up when it comes to Greek life. Like many things related to the College social scene it comes and goes and right now Frats and Sororities are considered cool again at big schools. Helps kids gain an identity at these huge places and also gives them a sense of community. What is interesting is that at small Liberal Arts Colleges like CatAlum described frats that have been around since mid 1800s are now gone because the liberal Admins have decided that they are no longer are welcome. They cite mostly hazing and underage drinking as the reason for elimination but the primary reason is they are considered elitist and by nature not welcoming to all, especially to the snowflake constituents the Admin and Faculty identify with. A safe space for gay students only is cool but a Sig house for the country club set is not so cool.

There are many frats at OSU, but compared to the overall student population I'd imagine not as popular as a lot of others. Mostly just because of the sheer size of the school.

At my alma mater (VERY similar to yours), the fraternities live on though their wings have been clipped.

As for the drinking...no doubt, fraternities are a lot about drinking, but that's what most 18-22 year olds want to do. There is a decent argument to be made that frats provide a structure to drinking, even an organization (and its members) to BLAME when things go wrong. In a GDI only world, things could be more out of control and harder for a college to police.

btw...I have actually had the honor of saying the following in a meeting with the Dean of Students...."Dean ___, you can't blame the fraternity for the actions of certain individuals".

Deaf ears.

Yeah. Knowing the details and some of the texts sent. This just becomes worse and worse.

His skin was gray and he felt cold. And then some sick individual texted that they'd just tell 911 they found him like that and called right away because his 'health was paramount'. That's just so sickening to read.

Quote:
According to the grand jury report, in a deleted text that was recovered, one man wrote, "If need be, just tell them what I told you guys, found him behind [a bar] the next morning at around 10 a.m., and he was freezing-cold, but we decided to call 911 instantly, because the kid's health was paramount."
String 'em up. They're not human.

Really? Seems VERY human to me. We're all sinners. We do stupid, careless, thoughtless, awful things, especially in a tough situation.

I'm not defending them at all. I'm making a comment on the human condition. I'm actually a fan of punishment. I also like redemption and second chances.

Never did anything stupid, evil, regrettable? Read the Gross Sexual Imposition statute...a mid-level felony...ever violated that law? Better still...read the Sexual Battery statute, the part about taking advantage of a sexual partner who's drunk. How about possession of drugs, many of which are felonies even in small quantities. Every violated one of those laws? Ever driven drunk?

Yeah, this case is sickening. I guess I'm surprised, but having been at some of those big frat parties I'm really not.
