Carlton Bragg transferring from Kansas

Former VASJ star Carlton Bragg will be transferring from Kansas he announced earlier. I'm curious to where he will land but he will be ineligible to play next season due to the NCAA transfer rule.

I predict he will play for fellow St. Joe's alum Jerrod Calhoun at Youngstown State. Coach Calhoun is gonna make the Penguins a powerhouse.

There is no word on where he will end up. YSU I guess is as good a guess as any. It will be nice to see him around and surrounded by friendly faces that genuinely care about him.

Seems like a bad move to me. I think he's a good part at a high quality program, where he doesn't have to carry the team. Hard to see him leading a team like CSU or YSU, which what would be expected of a guy transferring from Kansas.

Probably Akron. Groce. just got hired at Akron and he recruited Bragg pretty hard to Illinois

Did he jump or was he pushed?

Interesting to me is that he certainly wasn't a star at Kansas but he played an important role...2nd guy off the bench, 14 min per game; 5 pts/4 rebounds.

Did he conclude that his future was dimmer than his past (an upcoming recruit)? Trying to get away from that crazy girlfriend? Bill Self sending him a message that, maybe, he'd be better off somewhere else?

Many people on the staff thought that Illinois was the best fit for Bragg and Groce recruited him hard from day one. It's a good guess that is where he is heading.

It would seem that he would try a D1 major before mid-major or lower. Just my opinion. He would be a great addition to Ohio St.

This is the side of big time college sports that does not get reported. Athletic scholarship are four one year deals and at the discretion of the coach. If a coach has a big, talented freshman class coming in, they are not obligated to giving last year's scholarship players another year. The boomerang effect of the one and done factories like Kentucky and Kansas is that you may start on a team as a sophomore, not be good enough to leave early, but next year there are two hot shot freshmen coming in who will start over you. You come back for your junior year in a lesser role, transfer or declare early, thinking your draft stock will never be higher.

Here's one of those cases where Bragg overextended himself. He goes to Ohio State/ Illinois or a MAC school and he's a significant part of the program. He's not in the plans for a program like Kansas. Too bad, wish the kid well.

Bragg should have never went to Kansas for many reasons. Among the reasons, it's better to be a big fish in a small pond similar to his former team mate Dererk Pardon at Northwestern. A fresh start for him will be good. Praying for him that he makes the right decisions. I am sure it will all work out.

No clue if there is any interest from either part but Cincy would be a good fit for him with Clark and Washington both being seniors next year and Cronin's past history of success with transfers.

While technically correct, any program that yanks a scholarship from a kid for reasons other than injury or discipline issues will quickly be punished by recruits passing over their school.
I also believe in the case of injury D1 players are covered by their schools insurance policy, so they get to remain in school covered same as they were recruited.

Doesn't Illinois still have the kid from Memphis (LeRon Black) who would be at Braggs position and is a Junior?

There is supposedly a 4 star recruit at center who was released from his commitment to Illinois when Groce left. If Groce can bring Bragg and that kid to Akron, it would be quite a coup and lessen the blow of Dambrot leaving. Not saying it will happen, but it's nice to dream!

Carlton Bragg was still very much wanted at Kansas and would have played significant minutes off the bench next season; lack of scholarships was not an issue. Bragg sees himself as a star player and is going to go to a program where he can be just that. He would have been behind Udoka Azubuike and very likely incoming freshman Billy Preston, and Dwight Coleby actually played more than Bragg down the stretch. This is very much a playing time related issue.

I would be shocked if he went from Kansas to Youngstown St. I think he would also be in shock with the difference. Kansas is a Blueblood of college basketball. Youngstown is at the other end. $$$$
