Cleopatra Jones (1973)
Blaxploitation: Cleopatra is ridding the hood of drugs but when she destroys a poppy field this gets drug lord super honky "Mommy" irate. Meanwhile, drug pusher Doodlebug wants more territory and becomes aggressive with help from his goons Plug and Pickle. I could not believe it when Mommy made her appearance and it was Shelley Winters... lol.... fun film to watch especially the interactions of Doddlebug and his crew......... 5.0/8
quotes:
Doodlebug: Hey, how do I look?
Pickle: You look good...
Doodlebug: I don't look good. I look marvelous. It's 'cause I take care of my hair. My hair is like a woman. You treat it good and it treats you good. Ain't that right honey? You hear what I'm saying? Yeah, you got to hold it, caress it, love it. And it will love you right back. And if your hair gets out of line, you take a scissor and say, "Hair, I'm going to cut you."

Il maestro del terrore (Italy-1988)
Horror: "The Prince of Terror" .... Well, this movie really doesn't exist but yet it does. Never released one's only hope of finding it was on bootleg.... A director of horror movies who calls himself the Prince of Terror finds himself in a real life horror script when somebody breaks into his home and terrorizes his family. This one was a mess by the great Italian director Lamberto Bava but then maybe we did not get to see the final work and never will.... though, watch out for those golf balls.... lol,.... 2.0/8
Gojira tai Mosura tai Mekagojira: Tôkyô S.O.S. (Japan-2003)
Kaiju: Godzilla 27: Tokyo SOS.... The fairies warn that Mothra will attack Tokyo if the bones of Godzilla are not returned to the ocean. The problem is that the bones were constructed into what is now Japan's only defense in Mechagodzilla. I did not care for this one, nothing new as all the monster fight scenes have been done before and the battle between Godzilla and Mothra was pretty weak..... well, there is 28 in the series so that leaves just 1 more left..... 3.0/8

Hail Cesar: 4/8
Interesting premise, but I just couldn't get into it. Seemed like it was on ADD a bit. I know that this was meant to be a film noir to an extent, but I'd love to see the premise in a more modern setting. A week in the life of a "Hollywood fixer", who has to deal with stars, issues on set, etc...
Sort of an Entourage meets Be Cool type of movie.

What Movies Did You Watch in May 2017?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: 6.8/8
Not quite the original, but that was always going to be hard to top. Also tough to really compare one movie you've seen 10 times to one you just watched for the first time a few hours ago.
It's very different from the first movie, even though the first movie is very different than any other Marvel movie.
More heart than the first one, more jokes too. Almost too many though. 138 minutes, which I think makes it the fourth longest Marvel movie behind only Civil War and the two Avengers movie, all which have a lot of characters to service.
The music was much better in the first movie IMO. In part, because the songs in the first movie were more well known in pop culture.
If you haven't heard, there's 5 after credits scenes. All fun, one that definitely leads towards future movies, 2 others that could.
As far as kids go, it is about on par with the first movie. There is some language and some sexual references. Nothing too extreme though, it is still Marvel and Disney.
One of the only movies I'm tempted to go back and see in 3D, which I'm not generally a fan of.

Gifted - Good not great movie about an interesting subject. Would you want your child to be world class at something if it meant that they could not have a normal happy life? I think of the young Olympic gymnasts and the fact that their whole being is focused on the games, no regular school, no regular family life, no boyfriends (generally), nothing but practice and competition only to be washed up at the age of twenty. I would rather my kids be happy rather than great. If they can be both, so be it, otherwise, I would have them eschew fame and fortune.

took the kids to see it today. Having watched it a second time, and also watching the first lastnight, I think I like the 2nd one more.
The second one takes everything you love about the first, and amplifies it. While I still think there's 2-3 specific jokes I'd remove, IMO the heart and emotion of the 2nd movie is what lifts it ahead of it's predecessor.

The Damned United 7/8. Great sports movie about a football manager in England during the 70s. Better if you are familiar with the events involved. Still very good on it's own.
Pool Hall Junkies 5.5/8 Not as good as I hoped considering it has Christopher Walken and Chazz Palmentieri in it. Gotta say having Rick Schroeder as the opposition was a great move. Highly unlikeable character.

Blood Sand (2015)
Horror... I was in the mood for a bad movie and this sure sounded like one so load it up and what do we got.... Oh, a bunch of 20 year olds partying on a beach. Everything seems to be going great but come morning only few remain and soon learn that there is something in the sand!!!!! Well, none of them have cell phones since they didn't want any nude pics of them to show up on the net.... they must be from Mason.... so they are on there own to figure out how to survive. Oh yeah, this one was bad. Poor acting, poor script, and inconsistencies with the sand creature. I got what I wanted so I am happy in my misery..... 2.5/8

Cherry 2000 (1987) - The worst movie I have ever seen...ever. Ok, Melanie Griffith is really cute in the red wig and hot body, but this film commits the second greatest sin; 1966 Mustang abuse (second only to 1965 Mustang abuse, or third if you count 1964 1/2 Mustang abuse as a thing). Besides this automotive sacrilege, the script is moronic (they want to kill the people in the Mustang so, while it is suspended from a crane, in order to be ferried across a river gorge, they shoot RPGs at it rather than just drop it from 200 feet onto the rocks).
Stupid, stupid, stupid film. No wonder it never got a theatrical release and went straight to video.

Midnight Special (2016) 5.0/8
I felt like there was much more to the story that was not told. My biggest question would be .... Why did Lucas drop everything and risk his life to help this family when he only knew the father when he was a small child.... ????

The Boss: 4/8
Entertaining enough for a Netflix DVD watch, but too hit or miss on the jokes.
Room: 6/8
Excellent character study of those going through trauma of multiple degrees.

Imitation of Life (1959) - An interesting study of race relations in 1950's America centered on two single mothers who combine efforts to obtain their own vision of "success" and their daughters who suffer, one from the absence of her ambitious actress mother and the other who is trying to "pass" as white who trys to distance herself from her dark skinned mother. Very well acted with strong performances all the way around.

Overall I thought the acting was exceptionally bad in the second one.

Madoff. As bad a subject this is, 6/8. Richard Dreyfuss is Madoff in this film version and narrates Madoff's thoughts throughout. Surprise: there are no good thoughts.

The Funhouse Massacre (2015)
Horror/Comedy: Serial killers who break out of an asylum on Halloween take over a funhouse trapping the guests and murdering them. Fun times, this movie does not take itself seriously and this one was shot in and around Middletown Ohio.... 4.5/8

The Phantom From 10,000 Leagues (1955)
Horror: 2 different investigators try and figure out who or what is killing those who go out in the water... Not much of a creature feature as the creature does not do a thing and is only seen for a few seconds. Dull story to go with it.... 1.5/8
Legion of Demons (1973)
Horror: A girl goes missing and her room mate takes over for her at her work but finds that the co-workers are pushy and a bit off.... this one was just boring.... 2.5/8

Of Human Bondage (1934) - Bette Davis sizzles in this film of the bad girl and the nice guy who cannot break away from her. Lesley Howard, famous for his role as Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind, plays the pathetic chump.

Nice little character driven drama, with a very good cast, but nothing that necessarily wows you.

Love is a Many Splendored Thing (1955) - A little soapy for my taste but I have always liked the song and thought I should see the film. Besides that, it has William Holden as one of my favorite actors. Jennifer Jones plays the biracial woman physician who, together with Holden make up the star-crossed lovers who would suffer the hurtles race, geo-politics and a scornful ex would place in their way.
