Brunswick is sending 3 to Iron Man. They only have one elite wrestler returning (Heil), so maybe.

Matt's a senior, so he'll probably be taking all of his classes at Tri C. That, and he won't have to sit out half of the season. Still, Brunswick's not a contender, even with both (they would have been two years ago). They might sneak into the top 10, like last year when they basically had a 5 man team.

They probably knew they were coming back when they submitted it. Unless they've got some other transfers or Jr High kids, who are under the radar. Heil and the Fields bros. are the only 3 who are Ironman quality

3 for Brunswick = Heil plus both Fields brothers. That's what they got. I don't see them on the board at state with that.

They got on the board last year with only 4 guys (1st, 3rd, 5th ?) plus one DNP. So it's doable if M. Fields and Heil make the finals. They had a decent freshmen at 220 who was injured. As you know Bucksman, if you can walk and chew bubble gum, you'll be a contender at 220.

Ohio finishes the year with 9 teams ranked in the Fab 50 by intermat. I know intermat hasn't been doing the rankings too long and I don't know if they did it at all prior to Josh Lowe, so, I think he might know the answer to a question I have. Is this the most teams from Ohio to ever be ranked Nationally?

Also, how long has intermat been doing National rankings?

When I was "growing up" Amateur Wrestling News would get delivered to my grade school and to my high school. We would flip through to see the National rankings, which at the time were just a top 25 if I remember correctly. AWN was like a bible back then. We were never allowed to take it out of the library until three more issues had arrived. Then, it would go into the "general collection" and you were allowed to check them out, but you had to get it inspected by the librarian before he would check it out to you and reinspected upon returning (even though, they would put the ANW in a magazine cover where it was sealed up and protected ion plastic). When I was young it was Maple Heights and St. Edward, with some others mixed in from time to time. Then, Walsh Jesuit and St. Edward, again with some others mixed in. Then Massilion Perry and St. Edward. Then St. Paris Graham and St. Edward. Now we have St. Paris Graham, Olentangy Liberty, Massilion Perry, Elyria, Wadsworth, Brecksville and of course St. Edward all in the top 50 almost every year, plus this year Mason and Elder joined the rankings party (the first Cinci team I have ever seen ranked outside of Moeller in my lifetime that I can remember).

I happen to think Josh does a pretty amazing job avoiding an Ohio bias. It would be very hard for me to do. As the Ohio teams are obviously the teams he (and the rest of us here) have the most exposure to. In fact, I sometimes think he makes it harder for a quality Ohio team to be considered for one of the bottom 10 spots in the Fab 50 just to avoid the appearance of bias. I do not blame him for that and I am probably wrong anyway, it just appears to be that way sometimes and I can't help but think he is impacted by the national posters on sites like the mat, where he has been called an Ohio homer (not much anymore, but a decade or so ago it was not uncommon). Just my random thoughts. We are truly blessed to have some of the best wrestling, coaches, athletes, fans, and wrestling media folks in the country here in Ohio and particularly in Northeast Ohio.

InterMat has been doing national team rankings for seven seasons now (starting with 2010-11). I started full-on with InterMat (after the transition in ownership) right at the end of 2008-09, the first full start-to-end process was 2009-10.

Under previous ownership, InterMat did not do team rankings. The site that the current ownership of InterMat ran prior to the spring 2009 transfer did not do team rankings either.

Prior to 2010-11, national team rankings were done by AWN and WIN Magazine primarily. I think you saw some in Wrestling USA Magazine, but not consistently. Also the USA Today did a Super25 for a chunk of time, then stopped, though that was revitalized during 2015-16 as underwritten by the NHSCA.

As for why you saw an increased number of Ohio teams ranked nationally this year, it goes to the increased consolidation of power happening in Ohio and across the country. You have super-teams, you have mega-wrestlers; there's a clear delineation between the haves and the have-nots, the garden variety average is becoming obsolete.

Pretty sure Lakota West broke AWNs top 50 around 2003 or 2004ish. They won Brecksville that year I think also. That would probably be your 1st non-Moeller team from Cincy ranked.

seems the fields would have been a better fit at Brecksville. they would have 3 possible state champs and 3 high placers. why Brunswick?

The main reason is friends it's where they grew up and want him to have a good senior year. I feel like I have ruined his high school experience over wrestling.

great kid enjoyed watching Matt wrestle over the years. the only parents that should feel like they ruined their kids hs experience are the ones that took no interest in what their kids were doing in school and out of school. Good luck in the wrestling season.

Without doing much research, you have 9 of the top 10 nationally ranked teams from last year. I would go out on a limb and say that this group will battle it out. The favorite would be Blair (aka The Evil Empire), followed by SPG and the rest of the field. Blair has plenty of fire power back from last year, and they typically "find" talent if they have a hole. SPG also returns a lot, so that's why I put them in 2nd. Some of these others (below) might return a strong team as well. I just don't know that much about them. I know Ed's lost a lot, but will always put a strong team on the mat, although, likely not as strong as Blair or SPG.

Here's the top 10 from last year:
RANK SCHOOL STATE INDIV RANKED
1 Blair Academy New Jersey 7
*2 Buchanan California 4
3 St. Edward Ohio 2
4 Lake Highland Prep Florida 3
5 St. Paris Graham Ohio 4
6 Malvern Prep Pennsylvania 3
7 Clovis California 2
8 Wyoming Seminary Pennsylvania 2
9 Nazareth Pennsylvania 2
10 Bethlehem Catholic Pennsylvania 3

*Buchanan is not participating.

Note: Blair returns 5 of 7 ranked kids. SPG returns 4 of 4.
