Serena Williams Penalized for Calling Umpire 'Thief' Amid Controversial US Open

Quote:
Serena Williams didn't take kindly to a rules violation in Saturday's 2018 U.S. Open women's singles final against Naomi Osaka at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York.

In the second set, chair umpire Carlos Ramos assessed Williams with a violation after he said she received illegal coaching from her players' box. The 23-time Grand Slam champion didn't agree with the call.

Diva played race and gender cards. I think that makes it a full house. Too bad that didn't get her the win.

I know nothing about tennis, Zero! I see she had to ask for the Referee. Where is Referee located during the match? Could Referee had overruled or change any Rulings/Decisions that the Umpire made?

Wasn't it an accumulative thing though?

She was getting kicked anyhow. Sounds like she went on a whiney fit but I'm sure they will be investigation to see if the guy is sexist, a thief,.... I guess they came to some understanding after the fact but I doubt we'll ever hear an "apology" out of her.

She had 3 code violations.

I believe (could be wrong) 1st is a warning, 2nd is a point, 3rd is a game, 4th is a set.

Glad that b1tch got what she deserved. I have never been a fan bc of how disrespectful she is but after her tirade on the linesman from a few years ago I actively root against her. She is a POS

Unlikely. At the end of the day, even though she looks like a man, she's still a woman with inferior female genetics.

It was cumulative and she just never let up. She doubled down in every interview yesterday about how this should not be happening to her as a woman. She feels the apology needs to come to her.

Maybe they crafted a new response today.

She did. First was a gesture between her coach and her, which you can't do. Second was the racket smash. Third was when she wouldn't let it go and went after the chair.

Feel bad for Osaka. First Japanese woman to win a grand slam and she has to listen to all the dimwits booing during her trophy presentation.

Exactly. It's not like this all came out of nowhere. She's always acted like a spoiled little girl.

I fail to understand how these calls are “sexist”. That would mean the calls favored a man over her because she’s a woman. In this case the calls benefitted another woman. No man received a benefit from these calls, so how can the calls be sexist?

They are suggesting a man wouldn’t have been treated as harshly if he acted in the same manner. Although I think you already know this and are playing dumb.

He has a point though. While she is treated different as a woman, there was no benefit to a man. To claim sexism is just an excuse for her poor behavior.

Women's tennis is best of three. Men's tennis is best of five. I've never heard anyone claim that is sexist...just a difference between the genders.

To be fair she did exhibit class during the trophy presentation where she told the crowd to stop booing and gave credit to her opponent.

Would really like to hear what the Chair Umpire has to say about all this.

Sexist? Oh my, yes. You never see a male player penalized in a smilar fashion, like, say, John McEnroe. Oh, wait - yes, you do. Or did.

A more cynical person might say Serena's magnanimous comments to the crowd to acknowledge Osaka's win actually drew more attention to Ms. Williams than the winner - but I would never say that. Uh-uh.

Classic stuff:

I think some people say “sexism” when they really mean “double standard”.

All those were far worse than Serena incident. Just curious, did McEnroe ever incur a game penalty? I think the worst he ever got was a point, but I could be mistaken.

In one of those clips you can hear the ump assessing McEnroe a point penalty, and they're short clips, so hard to tell how far he was penalized in them

Honestly, I didn't know you could be penalized in that fashion, I just thought the ATF assessed fines to the players. It seems it doesn't matter how egregious each violation is, you just have to have enough of them - like a basketball player getting ejected for dunking twice during warm-ups.

Would have been cool to hear Serena incorporate the phrase "you are the pits of the world", though.

Here is Mac hitting the trifecta and being disqualified at the Australian Open back in the day:

I saw people on Twitter trying to say he never got more than a point penalty but that is false.

This article talks about him being defaulted in the Australian Open.

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/24/s...lian-open.html

This one documents a game penalty and his actions drew a 2 month suspension (not sure if it was upheld)
https://www.nytimes.com/1987/09/07/s...uspension.html

McEnroe certainly got away with a lot that he shouldnt have but he received more than a point penalty on numerous occassions. He was a whiny and rude player.

Serena has had a target on her back ever since she threatened a lineswoman in her match against Kim Clijsters.
