The highest levels of soccer are only affordable to maybe 1% of the population

Also, this idea that the US has the best athletes in the world always seems fuzzy to me

We put far more resources into and reward athletic talent more than any country in the world

If we traded out our 300 million people for any other 300 million I imagine they would do just as well.

I think our resources help our athletes more so than most countries but 300 million asians with our resources would still be small and suck at basketball sans Yao Ming.

If Lebron had focused on soccer from a young age, he would almost certainly be very good and possibly elite.

If Messi had focused on basketball from a young age, he still couldn't start for a decent high school varsity team.

Lebron could be a center back or goalie but he is too big for anything else, has there ever been a top rated non goalie player over 6'5"? Carrying around that weight for 90+ minutes of constant running would be difficult. I actually think a speedy baseball player would make for an solid soccer player. Mike Trout would be the ideal size and offer the dexterity plus creative IQ needed to make plays.

OK. So Messi might not have because of his height? Even then, I've seen lots of small point guards starting for pretty good high school teams. But let's just say you're right.

Ronaldo who is possibly the top player in the game along with Messi is 6'2" I think. I imagine if he focused on basketball from a young age he'd be able to start on a decent high school varsity team.

I would think LeBron would change his fitness regimen to possibly be leaner.

To equate this to the horse world, I had a guy talking to me about his horses and how he said he liked smaller horses bc they were lighter. I said you know what is better than a fast small horse? A bigger and faster one. Point being size usually isnt a negative in any sport.

He's 5'7 - if you're able to take a "man" that height seriously then more power to you. But it's difficult not to laugh that the best soccer player ever is a midget with a dad bod.

Peter Crouch was 6'7". Not sure if he was top rated though.

Consider this - the greatest soccer player ever has essentially the exact same height and build as pboy.

Your argument was he couldn't start on a decent high school basketball team. I simply pointed out there are lots of kids that height starting on decent high school basketball teams every year.

Not sure what your point is really. Other than you don't like soccer.

Depends what you define as decent. There are very few 5'7 kids starting on quality teams.

The point was obviously to highlight the massive discrepancy in athleticism between sports. I'd say the fact we're debating whether Messi could start for a HS team while it's pretty obvious Lebron would have been elite exemplifies this pretty well.

Soccer has its place, similar to wrestling actually, it provides small and less athletic kids an opportunity to compete and still feel like athletes. Nothing wrong with that.

It's your argument so you decide "decent". I've seen 5'7" kids starting for state championship teams but ok.

I'm not sure Lebron would have been elite though at soccer. What he is really good at I don't know would translate well to soccer.

Messi is actually very athletic but I doubt he could play in the NBA or NFL due to his size...other than a kicker.

Are you certain Messi is the best in the world? Let's just say the southern hemisphere.

Obviously that would be quite the outlier. There is simply no way around it, the greatest player of all-time in soccer has the build of a moderately in shape 12 year old.

Pretty obvious he'd at the very least be an elite goalie had he focused on that his whole life like he did basketball. I'd say given his speed, strength, coordination, conditioning, etc. there's a good chance he could have excelled elsewhere on the field too.

As i said earlier I am sure his training regimen would differ and he would probably be leaner. But in reality when has being tall and jacked ever been a hindrance in sports?

Messi is interesting because he was diagnosed with a growth disorder when he was like 12. If he wasn't a god at soccer he'd be like 5'3" or something since Barca paid for his treatment.

Soccer is a game of skill more than pure athleticism. It's not surprising some of it's greatest players are short.
