VASJ is 4-3 beat New Day Academy handily the day after they beat JFK.

My picks:
Sectional Champs: VASJ, Lake, Perry, and Edgewood
District Semi Picks: VASJ and Lake
District Champ: VASJ
Reason: VASJ may be young across the roster but no denying Jerry Higgins and his skill set and leadership. By the end of the year they should be rolling into the tournament on a positive start. The one test that would solidify my confidence as I’m putting aside my homerism on these picks and seeing it as an outsider that if Joes can go into the Lake game at Lake and roll them in February before the postseason, no reason to discard them as they fight for another trip to The Schott in March. But if the youth and inexperience shows then this would be Lakes district to lose. However I see VASJ beating Lake for the district crown and to make a return to Canton this time at the Civic Center in March.

However, I wouldn’t rule out Edgewood or Perry coming out either and my sleeper pick would be West G.

Benedictine is big and athletic like Joe's and play a very similar style and they just rolled Lake Catholic by like 15.

Lake was without both of their starting guards and a key reserve for the game vs Bene last night. Hopefully they'll be at full strength when they play VASJ in Feb.

I was unaware Lake was down three players until after the fact. That explains the margin. Not sure how deep Lake is but their starting five have been impressive. I plan to be at the game when Benny comes to Lake.

Even if they “roll LC in February” does that mean the Vikings will roll in March? I don’t care if you guys win by 40 in February, have at it. I’m assuming you haven’t seen LC play this season yet?

I do like it that these teams are playing again in the regular season. Hopefully they will continue to play in the future as well.

And there is a big separation between VASJ, LC, and the rest of this field. No disrespect to any of the other teams in this district, but there will be no sleepers here. This is hoops though so you never know. On any given night...

Good luck to VASJ the rest of the way.

The Vikings fans like using the word rolled. Were you there on Tuesday? I actually thought LC played tough considering the circumstances. Walking in I expected Benedictine to win by 30.

Good luck to the VASJ the rest of the way.

I don't think anybody knew prior to seeing the final score that Lake was down 3 players. I myself was shocked by the score because I expected Benny to win - but by a small margin. It made much more sense after hearing they were without two starters and a solid roll player. Don't think for a minute that Lake doesn't have Joe's attention. If anybody has followed VASJ you know they don't give a damn about the regular season - only March. They will not take Lake easy or overlook them. Viking Village knows what a solid team they are and how well coached a Moran team is.

My only concern about the Vikings this year is the strength of their schedule. I'm not sure why the former AD would schedule New Day Academy and Eastlake North if the NCL schedule is so weak. BBAll216, I know you have some problems with the former AD and I have to say that I agree with you on this one. Any AD that would place that schedule in Coach Babe's lap and then bolt for the door did him no favors in preparing him for March. It has always been the Viking way to go up against the best to prepare for March. Maybe with the new AD Coach Babe will have more say in scheduling moving forward?

Schedule is still tough. They played one of the top teams in Indiana, Cleve Hts, SVSM, Mentor, Euclid, Cornerstone, Lake , Ed's, CCC, STA, Hoban, Gilmour, etc. - not exactly a cake walk. My guess is the New Day game was a favor to Nate Barnes. Remember with the freshman and the transfer factor Joe's did not know what they had either. The team is still coming along and should be tournament ready in March. The new AD is a basketball junkie from what I'm told and Babe expects the Vikings to be really good next year. Usually when that happens the schedule get pretty challenging.

New Day was likely a last second game to fill a spot on the schedule and having a mutual connection with VASJ’s former freshman coach and father of c/o 08 standout Nate Barnes Sr. leading New Day, North I have no clue why they were on the schedule, Aquinas, CCC always play us tough, JFK is not a bad team which they would probably win their district come March and play in Canton for a chance to play in the Final 4. They still had tough teams on the schedule with STVM, St.Ed’s Cleveland Hts, Mentor, Lake, Cornerstone, Hoban, and Ursuline who are all tough quality opponents. Euclid is always a must schedule for the rivalry, Gilmour is an up and coming program that’s well coach, No surprise it was weakened a bit due to the fact the team is younger than years prior. But I still would like to see VASJ schedule Ignatius again, as well with possibly putting a home and home series with McKinley on the schedule, playing Benedictine, or any other NCL school in the opposite side of the league that we hardly play since the expansion in 2011-2012.

Anyone that is associated with St.Joes/VASJ knows how well teams are when one of the Moran’s are coaching, easily one of the best coaching families in the area and possibly the state. To clarify, I’m not expecting major blowouts when I say “roll” I mean go in and win in convincing fashion which would either be a well coach hard fought game with minimal mistakes or putting away the game in the 4th and use the momentum of the season as a boost into Districts and knowing playoff Hoops is a different animal. And I agree, I’m glad VASJ and Lake are playing each other consistently again before where it was counted as a league game and hopefully it stays like that knowing the connections. And also I’ve seen it many times to expect the unexpected in tournament play over the years hence the sleepers. Just 1 bad night for a real good team can result in a “na na na na hey hey hey goodbye” cheer
