Could you live "Off The Grid"?

Several TV shows are out now showing people moving to isolated areas to get away from so much technology. Would you be able to thrive by going off the grid?

Descartes 01-02-17 02:12 PM

I've thought I could make it as a homeless person, but the boredom would be unbearable.

ronnie mund 01-02-17 02:13 PM

Probably not. I like my technology.

EagleGuy 01-02-17 08:54 PM

I could - after coming up with a "to-do" plan involving as many outdoor activities, including travel, as possible. Until this time last year, I did without home internet and cable for at least ten years. Have really enjoyed both so I would not want to give them up anytime soon. (New smart phone on the way, my first)!

Arrogate 01-02-17 08:58 PM

Pboy would be the last person I would expect to make it as a homeless person.

Crusaders 01-02-17 09:09 PM

Probably if I had some people go for it with me. I'd go crazy if I was out in the sticks alone

WinstonSmith 01-02-17 09:11 PM

No. The mental aspect would get to me.

I select this guy with the first overall pick in the Off-The-Grid draft

eastside_purple 01-02-17 10:44 PM

I could do it pretty easy, just don't want to.

Uncle Ted 01-02-17 10:55 PM

Easily

I don't see using a library as being on the grid. I guess it depends on the definitions. If you have natural gas wells and royalties are wired to your account, but you write paper checks and take out cash, are you "off the grid"?
The free gas off your wells can fire a generator, so can you watch broadcast TV and DVD's and be "otg"?

I can't even pick berries without getting hurt and I burned my own house down cooking. Hunting and dressing a kill is not even on the options list so unless "off the grid" includes drive-throughs, I'd have to answer "no."

D4fan 01-03-17 05:02 AM

Yes, I grew up off the grid.

I will admit though, other than the fact I heat with wood, I do not wish to return to the former days and physical demands of survival via labor.

He's not bad, but not in same league as a good Amish bushman.

EagleFan 01-04-17 06:46 AM

Before my wife & daughter came along, I could have gone isolationist but probably not off-the-grid.

Obviously Ep.

I would like to know what people consider off the grid.

Yeah, I could put one of these

and a few of these

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/w...?itok=aiwqIN4m

on top of the rock by the lake and watch a 55" 4K TV "off the grid", by my definition.

cabezadecaballo 01-04-17 08:01 AM

No, not black skinheads, Ted. Just stop.

If one is nice, he can come in and watch TV, but I doubt that he will stumble upon me.

I hear TyDur is going "off the grid" at his Little House on the Prairie -

I can only guess people who do this have plenty of money or some form of financial resources. The issue I always wonder about these folks is they have little regard for the future. Many people would like to just go do whatever. But the idea is to earn enough money to take care of you and any dependents not only in the present, but when you retire (willingly or unwillingly). What happens to one of these people if they get sick, have a appendix attack, have a kidney stone, etc. Do they have health insurance, how quickly can they get to a medical facility? Who's going to take care of you if you become handicapped?

You miss the whole point of living in the wilderness. If you die young then you die young. It's about living totally free.

eastside_purple 01-04-17 11:18 AM

Live free or die. 14red just doesn't get it.

As I get older I like human beings less and less, so yeah, I could live alone in the wilderness. Always thought I was born in the wrong time and would have loved to have lived in the 1600-1700's and seen the this country before it was polluted by humans.

cabezadecaballo 01-04-17 12:12 PM

always suspected zee could be a sociopath....

We are all in agreement that your birth was a mistake.
