Norton coach fired

From an outsider looking in, it seemed that the Norton coaches got a lot out of those kids throughout the years. Anyone have details on the firing?

Yappi 04-10-17 07:45 PM

Seemed strange when I heard about this. The only explanation I've heard from others is that he was too old school, not sure how accurate that is though...

Be careful about speculation. I always thought he was a very solid coach. Yes, maybe he was a little "old school," but I thought Frank Martin made that in vogue again?!?!

pretty good coach on the court .... kind of a goof off !

CoventryTrackXCguy 04-12-17 03:57 PM

Yeah, Norton has always had a decent team, if not great. Im surprised that they fired the coach.

Seems like a beef that the retiring Superintendent has with the coach. Why else would an out-going superintendent make this kind of decision??!!

pete penny 04-15-17 06:33 PM

His record?

ball 4 04-17-17 01:01 PM

Board wants to rehire the coach. The basketball staff will not come back if they do not rehire him

Akronite 04-17-17 03:20 PM

Who is Norton going to hire who willl be better? It's Norton....

Hearing Mike Murphy, former Highland coach, is in the running for the job.

Is this the coach that went from Copley Girls, the Highland Girls, to Highland Boys, to Cloverleaf Boys Asst? He seems like a bit of a mercenary coach, follows talent and then leaves when the cupboard is bare.

sheldoncooper 04-25-17 03:01 PM

that could happen as he is buds with new Norton Super ! That would be a joke of a hire ... no loyalty, always leaves when talent starts to run out

Money Ball 04-26-17 11:59 AM

He could be like Phil Jackson. HE never did anything without Jordan & Pippen, or Kobe and Shaq!!!!

KentuckyKlondikeBars 05-02-17 08:15 AM

Norton has been a joke in the coaching community for years. Their coaches were yahoos that competed in a terrible league.

Campy Russell 05-02-17 04:27 PM

I'm hearing Murphy is the pick. Norton grad coming home.

You know, I really despise people who seem to have nothing better to do than to berate an entire league. These are high school kids we are talking about, not the NBA. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

As for Norton, I have nothing but the utmost respect for what their coaches do with their teams every year. But it seems like the coach gets a lot out of the (relatively) limited athleticism they do have. Norton always seems to put together a decent season every year. Any Norton fans that are reading this, don't pay attention to these trolls. You have a team that you can be proud of-don't let these people get into your heads, keep your heads up, and never lose your optimism.

P.S. Norton by the way is having a really good track season. They have a thrower who might actually qualify for states. I just love following PTC Track.

Have the Norton girls coach take over the boys program. He seems to have his act together. Took team on a deep playoff run.

Yeah, that Norton girls team was impressive. KentuckyKlondikeBars must be really mad about that, because it completely destroys his narrative about ptc schools. Ah well, he'll get over it.

Pending board approval, former Triway head coach BJ Sanderson will be the new coach at Norton.

farnsworth420 05-09-17 03:06 PM

what is the talent like at Norton? What is BJ in for?

CoventryTrackXCguy 05-09-17 03:45 PM

Nortons talent is pretty average, nothing spectacular. The key to their decent, even if not fantastic seasons over the years comes more from discipline and fundumentals. They get a lot out of the talent they do have. If BJ is a fundamentals guy, he could do just fine with the panthers.

Its a new era in sports! Parents hold entirely too much power! Their staff at norton did a pretty good job and they got chased out because he was "too tough on the kids"?? Give me a break!! You have administrations who dont know the difference between good coaches and bad ones! This guy has won multiple league titles at a school with very average talent and very little tradition and these types of decisions are exactly why they will remain average and continue to have very little tradition!!

It is also why good quality coaches are getting harder and harder to come by. In addition to that, AAU is dominating basketball. High School basketball is essentially becoming irrelevant. High School basketball is slowly turning into intramurals.
