Class of 2021 Akron Area

A couple kids headed to Hoban and St. V from this program.

SLAGuy 07-13-17 10:58 PM

Middle schoolers saying they are going to Hoban or StV is like HS kids saying they are getting recruited by D1 colleges. Lets wait a couple years to see how many actually dress varsity for these schools. Going back to their public school is like going D2 or D3. Its not bad but not the big reward they thought they were going to get.

First rule, don't rely on organized playground ball for middle school player evaluation. Some good '21 players in Akron working on skills rather than run and jump and they aren't going to StV or Hoban.

I seen ton of good players that worked on they "skills" all summer not be able to handle that "Run & Jump" pressure... This same narrative is old!!! With that being said nobody on this highlight jumped out to me as being ready for big time Varsity minutes.

dragon baller 07-14-17 11:38 AM

@ slay: I only mentioned where they were going because of the schools. I know they aren't going to be leading their teams to Columbus this year, just thought it was a good first look, from a good AAU program.
@ orangemen that streetball and athleticism is notorious for beating any type of skill at Ellet, granted it's been a nice ride with AJ, but let's see how this season works out without him.

Nothing about that video resembled street ball....

SLAGuy 07-15-17 08:13 PM

I'm sure some of those kids are very good but there have been plenty of giants in middle school who turn out to be very average size by the time they get to HS.

Orangeman89 07-17-17 10:53 AM

"0" in dark blue is the only kid on there worth a mention. No real defense, typical of AAU ball.
Leave the talent evaluation to the experts like me please.

Ellet is in position to dominate the City for the next several years. Pay attention.

Irish60 07-17-17 11:46 AM

IMO, most highlight packages are pretty meaningless. All the shots go in... All the passes are on the mark... All the blocks are dominating... To evaluate, you need to see who blocks out on a missed shot.. Who gets back on defense... Who plays hard when the ball isn't coming their way... These highlight packages are entertaining to watch, but they don't say much about who is ready to take the next step. Outside of a general feel about talent level, highlights don't show much.

You mean they are in a position to get smoked by Buchtel this year.

SLAGuy 07-17-17 11:59 AM

It would be awesome if the city series could get going in basketball. Always some decent teams but rarely a deep run. Could Ellet and Buchtel lead the way to success on the hardwoods?

That would be great to see! Man, do I miss Central-Hower!!!

SLAGuy 07-17-17 12:07 PM

Ellet would have been interesting in D2 with their size last year. They were solid in D1 but too many great teams to run through. With consolidation, maybe they can build a couple contenders.

Buchtel the most consistently good basketball program in the city, has the bad luck of being in the same district as ST. V. That being said, St. V. is a huge roadblock for anyone looking for a deep run in the Canton District.

Is the Buchtel coaching situation settled yet?

CoventryTrackXCguy 07-17-17 07:51 PM

Is Lebron jr going to svsm? My guess is the answer to that question is related to the question as to whether Lebron is staying in cleveland after 2018 NBA season.

Yes they hired Futch.

Orangeman89 07-17-17 08:57 PM

Buchtel might be in for a rough season this year.

He did play at Buchtel, and he also went on to play at Akron.

The rumor always was that he wanted his son to play for Coach Dru, and that it was one of the reasons he came back to Cleveland. Now, have things changed given his somewhat icy relationship with the owner? Who knows?

Henry37 07-19-17 10:10 AM

I see the Beacon is catching up, weeks and months later

SLAGuy 07-19-17 12:37 PM

Just be glad the Beacon covers high school sports at all anymore. Sharp decline over the last decade for their coverage. Soon to be non-existent.

Non-existent? The coverage or the paper!?!

SLAGuy 07-19-17 02:08 PM

I meant the coverage but could be either!!

STVM classes of 2019 2020 2021 are very talented. Although they are young they remain favorites to return to C-BUS in 2017-18 in D2. Hoban landed a Few players in the class of 2021. The Gap remains wide.

Stars, you've neglected to report on the 'very talented' SVSM classes of 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028. Along with the huge gap in talent from what Hoban has been able to find in house classes.

Well, you are right about the 2022-2027 classes. But we are still waiting on a couple of commits for the 2028 class before we can make such a sweeping statement!

StarstoShine 07-24-17 12:12 AM

2022 is looking very good as is the 2023 group. Jury still out on 2024. "doing things the right way" or "You won't make the team" is not the first choice for some. All the Billboards in Ohio won't change 7 (and counting) vs 1!!!
