2017 Cleveland Browns

With the draft now over, we can move on to assessing the 2017 version of the Browns. My best guess at the starters on opening day:

OFFENSE
WR- Coleman
WR- Britt
LT- Thomas
LG- Bitonio
C- Tretter
RG- Zeitler
RT- Erving
TE- Njoku
QB- Kessler
RB- Crowell
FB- Vitale

DEFENSE
DE- Garrett
NT- Shelton
DE- Ogbah
OLB- Collins
ILB- Davis
ILB- Kirksey
OLB Schobert/Orchard
CB- Haden
CB- Taylor
S- Peppers
S- Campbell

zeeman 05-01-17 02:35 PM

3-13

I thought they were going to play a 4-3?

thavoice 05-02-17 12:17 AM

2017: 7-9
2018: 10-6. Playoffs.
2019: 12-4 AFC Champ game.
2020: 11-5 but a SB spot. If they win it depnds to be seen on how tough the NFC is at that time.

It will be a great time to be a Cleveland fan coming up.

When you draft a QB who is a mix of Tom Brady and Cam Newton the future is very bright. The only thing that can slow down this franchise now is around the 2021 or 2022 season when his rookie deal is up. If he asks and receives the world then that will handcuff the franchise with the cap. If he is reasonable then they could sustain the success until his mid 30's.

Williams defense is a 4-3 Clark. If anything it goes to 4-2-5 often. Definitely not 4 linebackers

Also Campbell and Erving will be lucky to even make the team. I'd favor Coleman or Drango at RT. And Tyvis Powell or Ed Reynolds at FS

Orchard will be a DE not an OLB in this system.

The other DT will be between Desmond Bryant ,Meder and the 2 rookies

I agree with most of this ... I do think Erving will settle into an average RT (not great, but decent) ... I hope Powell is not the FS, he was terrible at OSU, still not sure how he played over Hooker. DT still is a question mark to me .... Meder is probably the best ... and he is at best as a backup.

MentorGrad2002 05-02-17 08:30 AM

Desmond Bryant is the best DT of those if healthy. Position looks good if Brantley is cleared and can play though

The FS options all suck. I would have taken one with the Kizer pick. Kindred might play more at ss if he shows out because Peppers will move around a lot in this defense. He's a great fit with what Williams does

My bad, I started from an end of season depth chart.

He's a Steelers fan, he constantly makes these over the top predictions on the Browns thread. I think he's trolling but who knows.

I think DB is the best player ... but I don't think he fits the prototypical DT (3 technique) most are shorter ... at 6'6" he is a little taller than most DT (on regular downs) ... I think they could use him a passing downs, but not on 1st & 10 and so ... that is where the rookies will come in (and Meder)

MentorGrad2002 05-02-17 02:55 PM

He's going to be cut if that's the best role they think he can handle. Which wouldn't shock me with the youth movement ..

When it happens just remember where you heard it first.

My guess at the Browns depth chart at the beginning of the season

QB - Kessler - Osweiler - Kizer (Kizer starts the second half of season)
HB - Crowell - Johnson - Atkinson
FB - Vitale
WR - Coleman - Higgins
WR - Britt - Louis - Payton* ---(Gordon???)
TE - DeValve - Njoku - Telfer (all play in a situational rotation)
RT - Erving - Coleman
RG - Zeitler - Greco
C - Tretter - Reiter
LG - Bitonio - Drango
LT - Thomas - Johnson or (Drango)

LE - Ogbah - Nassib - Bryant*
DT - Meder - Ogunjobi - Cooper*
NT - Shelton - Brantley - Wright*
RE - Garrett - Orchard* - Johnson/Holmes
LB - Collins - Schobert
MLB - Davis - Carder
LB - Kirksey (Schobert)
CB - Haden - Wilson
SS - Peppers - Kindred - Caldwell*
FS - Reynolds - Campbell
CB - Taylor - Boddy-Calhoun

PK - Parkey*/Gonzalez
P - Colquitt
LS - Hughlett

* veterans in trouble for a roster spot
Orchard/Johnson I think have a position problem -- I don't see them as 4-3 LB and might not be big enough for DE
Bryant is just an age thing

This team has much more depth than last year, especially OL ... I my guess is around 5 or 6 wins and more competitive all around ...

QB is still a big ???? --- does Kessler have enough talent? Can Kizer be consistent? Is Osweiler as bad as last year?

Certainly better than last year, but still not very good.

Josh Gordon denied re-instatement; agent severs ties with him.

I like the looks of the defensive line. Free safety frightens me

I completely agree ... DL looks like it will have a solid rotation ... that way players don't have to take plays off!

I have to think old Josh's aftercare may have hit a bump in the road based upon Roger saying "no thanks" and his agent/manager bailing on him a couple of weeks ago. Those vultures don't bail unless you're an real insufferable pain in the and now two have dumped him.

That makes 3 agents he has gone through: Jeff Nalley, then Drew Rosenhaus and then Jody Branion.

4th rd pick CB Howard Wilson signs his contract, goes to rookie minicamp the next day and breaks his kneecap, out for the year.
