LaSalle's Hilvert looking at Baldwin Wallace - accepts job

Adam Baum ‏@AdamJBaum 12m12 minutes ago

La Salle football coach Jim Hilvert is a finalist for the head job at Baldwin Wallace University, according to sources at La Salle

This thread is going to take off; no doubt.

I completely missed that Snell stepped down and that this job was even open.

PURPLE REIGN 01-06-17 12:30 PM

I assume it is money related as are most career decisions.

After winning back to back high school state titles, nothing left to prove. I would guess the head job at BW pays more than an assistant gig at UC?

Hope he finds what he is looking for.

lc5397 01-06-17 12:39 PM

I would think assistants at UC make more than the head coach at BW. I'd guess $75k is about the norm for an OAC level job. Maybe maxing out around $100k with success/longevity and extra administrative duties.

would like to see him at UC. I think Fickell needs a local high school coach to hit this area hard. Combs would have been great.

John Snell didn't really step down he has been "promoted" to assistant AD.

DaPope 01-06-17 01:25 PM

Heard he was a finalist at John Carroll as well.... Did they name someone yet?

funguy72 01-06-17 01:33 PM

I wonder which job is considered the better of the two? JC has been on the rise and had a great season this past year While the facilities at BW are generally considered some of the best in D3. It seems that if a coach really wants to develop his own legacy he would take the program with the best potential, not necessarily the program that is currently better.
Curious to know if anyone knows any other finalist's names for either position - Looking to see what HS coaching positions could become open.

Come on down Gerry Beauchamp, unless he goes to Turpin.

Please go to Turpin, we can send them a nice fruit basket!

EagleFan 01-06-17 02:19 PM

Who would be candidate to take over at LaSalle?

DaPope 01-06-17 02:26 PM

I believe they would go outside of the current staff. So, hard to tell.

voiceoreaso 01-06-17 02:59 PM

It is my understanding that both JC and BW are pursuing him. I also heard that Coach Fickell was meeting with him this week or next.

lc5397 01-06-17 03:42 PM

It would seem so. Seems like he had a similar career arch as Scafe at JCU. Some good years and playoffs early on and then a plateau and slight decline.

D3 coaching is a hard proposition. The only guy who makes a livable amount of money is the head coach. The rest is a bunch of 22-28 year olds. At some point, you wake up as a 50-something head coach working with a bunch of 20-something assistants that you literally have nothing in common with. Regardless of W-L, it's probably time to go into administration at that point.

Uh, could it be the talent level at Lasalle is going back to normal? Uh I really don't know, but before this current run they were the GCL south doormats.

LEONARD 01-06-17 04:22 PM

Interesting considering he left a head D3 head gig at TMC for LS. Is BW money that much longer than TMC?

Snell is a nice guy, but his program was the definition of mediocrity. I'm not sure how he lasted so long at BW, maybe the school is trying to be serious about winning now.

JCU is the far better job, but both are shooting for one of six at-large bids 99.9% of the time. Basically have to go 9-0 aside from Mount every year to make the playoff

Uh John Carroll beat the Mount this year.

uh blind squirrel finds a nut, one win since 1989. I think Mount is still the team to beat.

Falcon93 01-08-17 08:29 PM

Snell was asked to step down as the head coach ay BW. They created the Asst AD job. Not sure why LaSalle coach would go back into DIV III football again, although I'm sure JC and BW pay much better then TMC.

I hope they don't hire his wife as well considering she stole from NKU

BigSack 01-09-17 02:31 PM

the offensive coordinator at BW just left to be a GA at OSU. Maybe a new HC hire is around the corner

BigSack 01-10-17 12:18 PM

JCU is announcing the new HC this Saturday

Who is it?

Don Flamenco 01-10-17 02:32 PM

Great coach. I wish the timing would have worked out for Hilvert and Elder. The guy is a flat out winner. He would no doubt have taken his alma-mater back to an elite level. Oh well.

I'd love to see him end up on UC's staff. Do you know if he's interviewing for a position coach or in a quality control / advisory type role?
