Portsmouth Trojans 2017-2018
The Southeastern District's all time winningest program, the Portsmouth Trojans, return 3 starters from last season's 17-8 district semifinal team. 6-1 SR Reese Johnson, 6-2 SR Daniel Jordan, and 5-8 SR DJ Eley all come back to give the Trojans plenty of experience at key positions. In addition, PHS has added a transfer, 6-3 SR Isaac Kelly (QB in football). Kelly will compete with MyQuel McKinley, a 6-3 JR, for the 5 spot. 6-1 SOPH Matthew Fraulini looks to fill the scoring void left by the graduation of Portsmouth's 4th leading scorer in school history, Kendal Reynolds. Fraulini has a complete package of skills, and has a very athletic style to his game. Also battling for minutes will be 6-5 SR Gabe Gambill, 5-10 JR Daniel Lattimore, 6-0 JR Anthony Ferrara, 5-10 SR Deonta Parker, 6-5 JR Collin Boehm, 5-10 JR Aubrey Holley, and 6-2 JR Andrew Meadows.

Overall, the Trojans should have more size, muscle, and athleticism than last year's squad. Scoring ability should be adequate, especially with Fraulini's talents. Portsmouth has an excellent chance to at least match last year's win total, and also has the talent to advance to the regionals come March. In OVC play, Fairland is the obvious favorite, with its top 6 players back, but look for the Trojans to be very competitive and in the top 3 of what appears to be a very good league in 2017-2018. The OVC could put 3-4 teams in regional play, with Fairland and Gallia Academy in D2, Portsmouth, Ironton, and South Point in D3, and Coal Grove in D4. CG has all 5 starters back.

Eugene Collins begins his 9th year at PHS, with an overall record of 139-56, leading the Trojans to 2 Final 4's (2011 and 2012), a regional runnerup (2015), a district runnerup (2014), and 5 sectional titles. In this current decade from 2010--present, Portsmouth has the best tournament resume of any school in the SE district. It has the most recent win by a SE school in the Final 4, that being a 74-66 win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the 2012 state semifinals.

Portsmouth is not a program of the past, but cherishes the championships, banners, trophies, great players, and great teams from years gone by.

GO TROJANS 2017-2018!!

Good luck this season! Still in DIII?

trojandave 11-16-17 07:20 PM

coachablekid: Still D3, and excited about hoops season. Should be another solid year for the Trojans, hopefully making a longer tourney run this time around.

3out2in 11-17-17 09:45 AM

Best of luck this season Dave. Always enjoy your updates on the Trojans, one of the most historic programs in Ohio basketball.

trojandave 11-21-17 06:47 PM

Thanks, 3out2in, I will do my best to keep everyone updated about the Trojans. Talked to Coach Collins just yesterday and he is excited about this year's team.

The Trojans opened the 2017-2018 season with a 97-66 win at Toledo Jones Academy. PHS and Jones played even for most of the first half, but the Trojans surged ahead to a double digit lead after 2 quarters. The second half was pretty much controlled by Portsmouth, but Jones did make a total of twelve 3's. 6-1 senior Reese Johnson tallied in 31 points to lead PHS, and he was supported by 6-1 sophomore Matthew Fraulini with 18, 5-8 senior DJ Eley with 17, and 6-2 senior Daniel Jordan with 14.

Portsmouth will next play on Thursday vs. Huntington (WVA) St.Joe in the Buckeye Elite Classic which will be played at Portsmouth HS.

tcgobucks 12-07-17 02:19 PM

TrojanDave....I remember reading all the Portsmouth posts back in the "Huddle" days. I'm sure anyone who was around remembers PrinceTrojan. What happened to him? Don't recall ever seeing him posting here. Always wanted to make a trip down to the river to see if the 'Tooner was real :)

trojandave 12-11-17 02:52 PM

tcgobucks: I never knew who Prince Trojan was, but his posts were memorable to say the least. I don't know what has happened with him the last couple of years, he may be going by a different name by now somewhere.

The Trojans upped their record to 3-0 with a pair of comfortable wins over the weekend. Portsmouth beat Huntington St.Joe 79-48 in the Buckeye Elite Classic held at PHS. Sophomore Matthew Fraulini led PHS with 20 points. On Saturday, the Trojans got off to a slow start against rival Portsmouth West, then the offense got clicking and the game ended up an 80-56 win over the Senators. Daniel Jordan led Portsmouth with 17 points. In the first 3 games this season, the Trojans have had 3 different players lead the team in scoring. PHS is averaging 85 PPG.

Portsmouth starts OVC play on Tuesday as the Coal Grove Hornets come to Portsmouth. On Friday, the Trojans will battle another OVC foe as they travel to South Point.

trojandave 12-13-17 12:19 PM

Portsmouth lost on a buzzer beater to the Coal Grove Hornets 57-55 last night at PHS. The Trojans led after 1 quarter, at halftime 30-23, and after 3 quarters 45-41. Turnovers, though, kept PHS from extending their largest lead of 10 points. Portsmouth committed 20 turnovers and allowed 15 offensive rebounds to the Hornets, yet it still took a 10 foot shot by Aaron Music at the buzzer to beat PHS. The Trojans overall outrebounded Coal Grove 38-30, and outshot them 43% to 39%, but the Hornets really hurt PHS on the offensive boards which resulted in a number of putbacks.

DJ Eley led Portsmouth with 15 points, Gabe Gambill pitched in 11, and Matthew Fraulini added 10. PHS is now 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the OVC, and play Friday at South Point in another OVC contest.

trojandave 12-16-17 02:43 PM

The Trojans got back on the winning track with a thrilling 65-58 win at South Point. Portsmouth raised its record to 4-1 and 1-1 in OVC play. The Trojans trailed the Pointers 54-42 in the 4th quarter, but rallied to outscore SP 23-4 to end the game. Matthew Fraulini led PHS with 18 points, DJ Eley had 15, while Daniel Jordan and Isaac Kelly pitched in 13.

Despite the win, the Trojans are still plagued with turnovers and going forward must minimize those as much as possible to surpass last year's 15-7 regular season mark. Looking at PHS's schedule, I feel 17 wins is still possible, but not if the turnover issue is not resolved. On the positive side, Portsmouth is probably as athletic as any team on its schedule, and as evidenced last night, has the capability to have balanced scoring.

Sophomore Matthew Fraulini is averaging 15.5 PPG and is one of the leading sophomore scorers in the SE district.

Portsmouth will play Western Pike next Wednesday, followed by a rivalry battle at Wheelersburg on Saturday. The Trojans lead the series against the Burg, holding a 23-17 edge, one of the few schools to have the upper hand on the Pirates in a series.

trojandave 12-22-17 02:37 PM

Portsmouth upped its record to 5-1 with a convincing 76-55 win over Western Pike. The Trojans jumped to an early 14-5 lead, and were never threatened in the game, extending their lead at one point to 25 points. Senior PG DJ Eley made seven 3's en route to scoring 29 points. Sophomore Matthew Fraulini pitched in 20, the 6th straight game he has scored in double figures.

Portsmouth will travel to Wheelersburg on Saturday to take on the Pirates.

trojandave 12-23-17 09:22 PM

Portsmouth fell to 5-2 on the season with a 56-47 defeat at Wheelersburg on Saturday. The Trojans led after 1 quarter, but fell behind 28-24 at the half. PHS then scored 7 straight points to take a 31-28 lead, but the Pirates took advantage of Trojan turnovers and poor free throw shooting by PHS to secure the win. Matthew Fraulini scored 14 points to lead PHS, while DJ Eley chipped in with 11. Freshman JJ Truitt led Wheelersburg with 15 points.

Portsmouth had won 11 of the last 12 vs. the Pirates, so the Burg was due for a win. Overall, the Trojans lead the series 23-18.

trojandave 12-26-17 07:26 PM

Ohio Valley Christian was supposed to play the Trojans on Friday at the Wendy's Classic at PHS, but it was cancelled and the game will not be made up. Portsmouth will play New Hope Christian on Saturday at the Wendy's.

Currently, Portsmouth's all time record stands at 1,439--762.

trojandave 12-31-17 04:57 PM

Portsmouth made a spirited 4th quarter comeback by outscoring New Hope Christian Academy 28-16 to win 72-65. The Trojans entered the final frame down 49-44, but Reese Johnson hit several key buckets in the final minutes, and PHS's defense stymied the Statesmen, forcing some missed shots and turnovers. Johnson led PHS with 18 points, and 3 other Trojans were in double figures.

Portsmouth improved to 6-2 on the season, while New Hope lost only its 3rd game. The Statesmen are a good basketball team that play an uptempo game and can score from outside and in the paint. This was a good win for Portsmouth.

Portsmouth will host Chesapeake next Friday in an OVC contest.

trojandave 01-06-18 02:17 PM

Portsmouth held off a Chespeake rally in the 4th quarter to beat the Panthers 69-63 at PHS. The Trojans held as much as a 14 point lead in the final frame, but CHS cut the lead to 2 points, taking advantage of a number of PHS turnovers. Reese Johnson made a crucial bucket to push the lead to 4 points, then the Trojan defense got a stop and another score to give Portsmouth the final margin. 6-2 senior forward Daniel Jordan had a career night, as he scored 28 points and had around 15 rebounds. Freshman Eli Archer led Chespeake with 21 points. Portsmouth improved to 7-2 on the season, and will host highly touted Fairland on Tuesday night. The Dragons have gone two straight years posting a perfect 14-0 mark in OVC play.

Just recently, www.trojanhoops.org. reached 80,000 hits. The website, detailing the rich history of Portsmouth Trojans boys basketball, was started in 2011 by current Coach Eugene Collins. It is not associated with the Portsmouth City Schools and is independently maintained. I am responsible for compiling the information contained in the site. There are 80 different topics which cover about everything concerning the history of the Trojans. I make a diligent effort to keep all the records up to date because there are a lot of former players, coaches, alumni, and other parties who are very interested in the accomplishments of Portsmouth basketball.

trojandave 01-10-18 12:31 PM

One of the top D2 teams in the state, the Fairland Dragons, jumped to a 16-6 lead in the 1st quarter, and a 30-14 lead by halftime, and went on to defeat a scrappy Portsmouth squad 66-42 Tuesday night at PHS. Despite falling behind early, the Trojans battled back to cut the Dragons lead to 44-33 in the 3rd quarter before FHS's senior guard Luke Thomas hit three straight 3's to end PHS's rally. Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth (7-3) with 18 pts.

Fairland made the Final 4 last year in D3, and this year they are D2 but are very capable of getting back to the Schottenstein Center. Their starting 5 is very solid, and they plenty of offense to go with it. Portsmouth slowed the tempo somewhat, but the Dragons only outshot the Trojans 52-51. The Trojans were really hurt on the boards.

Portsmouth should still be able to win around 15 games in the regular season.

trojandave 01-12-18 05:43 PM

Portsmouth will play in the Beast of the Southeast tournament at Chesapeake HS on Feb.10. They are filling in for Ashland(KY) which had to cancel their committment from the original date of Jan.12. The Trojans opponent has yet to be determined. This game will give PHS 22 games.

trojandave 01-17-18 11:33 AM

Portsmouth was scheduled to play at Rock Hill last Friday, and at Gallia Academy this past Tuesday. The Gallia game will be played on Saturday, Jan.27th. No date has been set for the Rock Hill makeup game.

trojandave 01-20-18 10:49 AM

Portsmouth beat Ironton 56-50 Friday night at Ironton. The Trojans led throughout the game, but the Fighting Tigers hung tough, tying the game at 49 late in the 4th quarter. PHS came through in the clutch with some key FT's and defensive stops to secure the win. Isaac Kelly led PHS with 12 points. The Trojans are now 8-3 on the season, and will play at Coal Grove on Tuesday. The Hornets beat PHS earlier in the season 57-55 on a buzzer beater.

Portsmouth will play Albany Alexander on Feb. 10 as part of the Beast of the Southeast at Chesapeake HS. This will makeup for the Ohio Valley Christian game which was cancelled earlier.

trojandave 01-22-18 06:55 PM

Portsmouth will play a makeup game at Rock Hill on Saturday, Feb. 3.

trojandave 01-24-18 05:04 PM

The Trojans dropped to 8-4 on the season with a 59-53 loss at Coal Grove on Tuesday. PHS trailed 14-11 after 1 quarter, but took a 1 point lead by the half. The Hornets scored the first 9 points of the 3rd quarter to take a 37-29 lead, but Portsmouth battled back to even the score at 49 with a 90 seconds remaining. Coal Grove made the go ahead bucket, then got a critical stop and a couple of FT's to secure the win. Matthew Fraulini led the Trojans with 11 points. Coal Grove is 8-3 on the season, and 4-2 in OVC play, while the Trojans are 3-3 in the OVC.

trojandave 01-27-18 01:23 PM

Portsmouth played perhaps its best game of the year with a convincing 79-53 win over the South Point Pointers Friday night at PHS. The Trojans fell behind 7-0, but ended up leading after 1 quarter 21-11. Portsmouth continued to lead throughout the remainder of the game, with SP cutting the lead to 14 points early in the 4th quarter. Daniel Jordan scored 27 points to lead PHS, with Isaac Kelly chipping in 14. The Trojans are now 9-4 on the season and 4-3 in OVC play.

One more win will give Portsmouth its 85th season of at least 10 wins.

Portsmouth has a tough task tonight as they travel to D2 state ranked Gallia Academy in another OVC contest.

trojandave 01-29-18 02:22 PM

Portsmouth was even with Gallia Academy after 1 quarter, 19-19, but after that the Blue Devils completed dominated the Trojans en route to a 76-50 win at GAHS. It was probably Portsmouth's poorest defensive effort of the season, as Gallia Academy scored layup after layup to build an insurmountable lead. 7 foot sophomore Zach Loveday scored 15 points for GAHS, while DJ Eley pitched in 13 for Portsmouth.

Despite the loss, Portsmouth is still a good 9-5 on the season, and 4-4 in the OVC. The Trojans' 4 losses have come to 2 state ranked D2 schools, Fairland and Gallia Academy, and the other three have come against 2 loss Wheelersburg and 10-4 Coal Grove (twice). Those 4 schools have a total of only 10 losses.

Portsmouth will travel to Chesapeake on Tuesday in another OVC contest. The Trojans tripped up the Panthers 69-63 at PHS 10 days earlier, so this should be a real battle for PHS to get the win.

trojandave 01-31-18 05:08 PM

Portsmouth defeated Chesapeake 49-36 Tuesday night to push their record to 10-5 and 5-4 in the OVC. The Trojans fell behind at the start 7-0, but Coach Eugene Collins' full court press eventually took its toll on the Panthers. The Trojans were led by sophomore Matthew Fraulini with 14 points. With the win, it marked the 85th season in which Portsmouth has won at least 10 games. Chesapeake's starting 5 included 3 sophomores and a freshman.

Portsmouth has a difficult task ahead Friday night as they travel to Fairland to battle the #9 AP D2 ranked Dragons. FHS earlier won at PHS 66-42.

trojandave 02-03-18 03:20 PM

For the second time this season, the D2 #9 AP ranked Fairland Dragons made quick work of the Trojans en route to an easy 69-48 win at FHS. The Dragons jumped to a 17-6 lead, and were never threatened by the 10-6 Trojans. After 3 quarters, the score was 59-29 in favor of FHS. Sophomore Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth for the 7th time this season in scoring with 19 points. Portsmouth is now 5-5 in OVC play, and will play at Rock Hill tonight in another OVC contest. On Tuesday, the Trojans host Rock Hill in a rare back to back schedule.

The Portsmouth freshmen, 8th, and 7th grade squads all defeated Fairland. The Fairland varsity made it a 3 year double dip sweep of the Trojans, but graduate all 5 starters and its first sub.

trojandave 02-05-18 06:13 PM

Portsmouth rebounded Saturday night after a lopsided loss to Fairland with a 54-42 win over the Rock Hill Redmen at RH. Portsmouth jumped to an early 13-4 lead, but RH hung around for most of the game, with the Trojans making some FT's in the final 2 minutes to push the score to the final margin. Daniel Jordan led Portsmouth with 13 points. Rock Hill has won only 1 OVC contest on the season, that being a 78-69 win at South Point.

The Portsmouth JV continued its struggles, as RH won easily over the Trojans. The JV squad has won only 1 game this season. The varsity Trojans will graduate 5 of the top 6 players.

Portsmouth entertains Rock Hill on Tuesday in a rare back to back schedule with the Redmen. This happened because of an earlier postponement. With a win, PHS will secure its 80th winning season. Gallia Academy comes to Portsmouth on Friday, a game in which the Trojans will be looking for payback after a 76-50 drubbing by the Blue Devils a week ago.

trojandave 02-06-18 02:46 PM

With the win over Rock Hill last Saturday, Coach Eugene Collins notched his 150th win as the head coach of the Trojans. In this his 9th season, he has an overall record of 150-62. Currently he is the 3rd winningest coach in Portsmouth history, behind only Red Hopkins (1926-1936, 168-58), and George Heller (1952-1968, 224-137).

Also tonight, the Trojans with a win can record their 66th season of at least 12 wins.
