Is Montpelier in the TAAC or is that only for football?

I would move Gibsonburg below MVCD. I have not followed close enough to rank 6-8.

Some young dynamic players entering the league with Zeb Jackson and Joey Holifield. Both getting a lot of D1 looks entering their freshman season. Jackson has offers from Toledo and Akron.

J.R. Swish 11-07-16 10:30 AM

Who do those 2 freshmen play for? Does Ottawa Hills have their usual assortment of big guys again this year?

Jackson = MVCD
Holifield = Cardinal Stritch

Think OH has a 6'5"ish player in Roman. Not sure of size of the other players but there is another Coil who is a soph. His family is very tall, dad pushing 7' and brother 6'8". OH also has the player of the year in Hunter Seiban.

Ochoa from TC will be the best big man in the league. 6'7" and athletic.

Is Zeb Jackson back at MVCD? Last I saw he was going to TCC.

It should be a good battle for the league this year. OH, TC and Stritch should battle for the title. They all play each other the first week of the season so we should have a good idea early on who's going to lead the pack.

MVCD could be in the mix with Zeb. I'm not sure they can surround him with the supporting cast to contend.

Cardboard Palace 11-15-16 09:01 AM

Yes, Jackson is back at MVCD. He transferred after the 1st quarter. I don't think he has to sit since he had not played yet.

Here is the lowdown I got from friend whose son transferred to Stritch (he lives and breathes basketball).

He thinks they will be real good by the end of the year, but could have some growing pains early with OH and TC. They are real young. 4 freshman and sophs fighting for PT, good Jr class who got varsity time last year and some good glue type guys who are seniors.

They have good to great guard play with some depth behind Burton and Holifield. Some real solid shooters on the outside and good size on the interior, two 6'6", one 6'5" and a 6'4" 250 kid who can rotate on the inside.

There are some great coaches in the TAAC. Should be a fun league to watch.

Top players in no order; Ochoa, Jackson, Burton, Holifield, Seiban, Roman.....Woodley averaged 9 and 9 as a soph last year.

Well it's apparent Steve knows what he is talking about. They are indeed very young but I suspect things are going to get very interesting for the Cardinals in the next couple years.

He would laugh at that.

Cardboard Palace 11-22-16 09:25 AM

Any scrimmage results for the TAAC?

Stritch had some up and down quarters vs Fayette and another small team, but won by 30+ when adding all quarters together.

They beat Port Clinton or Clyde (some school out that direction, forget what I was told) by around 20.

Played even with Perrysburg and Defiance overall but was told they beat Perrysburg 20 something to 5 in the 1st quarter. They were missing their big man in the middle (think he is a transfer from Woodward).

I might have a new favorite school.

J.R. Swish 11-28-16 02:55 PM

Gburg looked a little rough last week against New Riegel and Pandora-Gilboa. Only won a couple quarters in 6 or 8 quarters of play. They have one really good guard/wing who nailed about 12 threes. Not much size or any real extreme quickness. They play hard and I heard they looked better against Old Fort and Carey the week before. Should be .500 or better.

Cardboard Palace 11-28-16 03:36 PM

Stritch beat Rossford by 1 through 6 quarters. They were up 8-10 after 4 quarters. Stritch played their whole roster a lot of minutes (13 or 14 deep). Rossford played starting 5 heavy minutes and only went maybe 8 deep overall.

Stritch beat Start or Woodward (not sure which one) more quarters than they lost. They had an ugly last quarter with all backups in. Don't know any more detail than that.

J.R. Swish 11-30-16 04:40 PM

Saw Ottawa Hills on Monday and they will be a tough matchup in the TAAC. 6 foot 6 post Coil was in street clothes (maybe minor injury but he looked fine). They still had a nice, athletic 6-5 post and a couple other decent sized wings. Guards really good with a 3 point shooter and Sieben playing well. If Coil is an offensive weapon then they will be hard to guard. Well coached with usual very aggressive half court man to man D that they are known for. Only weaknesses I saw was lack of depth and secondary ballhandler when Sieben gives it up.

This week will be a good indicator of who's possible of contending for a title.
Key match-ups

Dec 6.
Toledo Christian @ Cardinal Stritch
Ottawa Hills @ Danbury
Emmanuel Christian @ Northwood
MVCDS @ Gibsonburg

Dec 9.
Cardinal Stritch @ Ottawa Hills
Emmanuel Christian @ MVCDS
Danbury @ Northwood

Cardinal Stritch has an opportunity right out the gate to take on the top two teams picked to finished 1-2 in the league this week. Toledo Christian at home and then on the road at Ottawa Hills we will see if the early season accolades are true.

MVCDS gets to true test @ MVCDS a place they have not won at since 2012!
Winner of that game set themselves up nicely for early contention for league title.

Danbury beat Lakota a struggling team convincingly and lost to a solid St.Mary's (Sandusky) squad by 3. Game vs. OH will be a good indicator if Danbury has taken a step up or not in the league.

E.C got drubbed by Hilltop, game vs Northwood and MVCDS will determine who's going to be the cellar dweller in the TAAC this season.

Thanks a lot schedule makers.

Stritch is a very young team. I think the coaches got it about right with them picked 3rd, until they can knock one of the top 2 teams off.

Win a game or 2 this week and they gain confidence. Lose and the coaches can use it as motivation to improve.

They seem to really have picked it up on the defensive end this year. They earned a lot of floor burns fighting for loose balls. Will hang their hat on tough, sound defense. They also have spread the scoring around. Ten guys scored vs St. Joe and it wasn't just in mop up time. Fun team to watch. Future is bright, but is it now?

Trailsendcustom 12-05-16 05:49 PM

The schedule is just whacky having the three upper tier teams play in the first week of the season. If somebody has a bad week they can be completely out of the running by game three.

Stritch has a lot of depth for the taac. 11 of 13 on the bench played in the first half with no significant drop off. That's unusual in the Taac as most teams only go 7-8 deep. They are very young and it showed at times with some bad turnovers. They did find some shooters and had 12-13 threes. Shooting has not historically been something the Cardinals have excelled at. St Joe came off a big win over somebody but I'm not sure how good they are. Tuesday and Friday will be a good indicator of what the Taac landscape will look like.

Is this kid any relation to the Zeb Jackson that played for St. Francis in the late 80's and went on to play football at BGSU?

Yes that's his Father.

St. Joe beat Arcadia 73-40 the night before. I don't think St. Joe is very good, but they didn't lose much from last year's team when Stritch beat them by 10-12. So I think Stritch is much improved.

Stritch has a lot of work to do and may be farther away from their potential than anyone in the league. I think there are only 3 guys with a full varsity season under their belts. The rest split time with varsity and JV last year or played freshman/8th grade ball.

Agree that Tues and Fri will tell us a lot more about where they are at, but not necessarily of where they can end up.

Should be a good game and interesting chess match between 2 good coaches tonight.

Cardboard Palace 12-06-16 02:40 PM

Based on Danbury's score vs Sandusky St. Marys they must be better than I gave them credit for. Anyway, they are clearly better than EC and Northwood.

.......or not after seeing score vs OH.

MVCDS @ Gibsonburg MVCD 62-55

TC/Stritch game was like a rugby scrum. Not pretty, but an exciting game. Stritch was down big early, but showed a lot of toughness to climb back and tie it up with under a minute to go.

808 12-07-16 12:10 PM

TC over Cardinal Stritch cannot read too much into that game early on will be a good rematch later on. TC's Mc Whinnie loves to take air out of the ball in close games. He's been doing that for years. Once saw a District Final halftime score of 18-13 because he held the ball for almost and entire quarter. Cardinal Stritch may have real promise

OH vs. Danbury 80-32 enough said.

EC vs. Northwood 47-46 last second shot to win in 2nd OT. Talk about low scoring games. Two overtimes and only reach 93 combined points.

MVCDS vs. Gibsonburg word has it freshman Jackson is the real deal avg 24 pts a game. Gibsonburg was up big after 1st 21-10, only scored 4 in the 2nd quarter to lead 25-22 at half. Then took at 44-33 lead into fourth just to be outscored 29-14 in the fourth. Apparently big for MVCDS was in foul trouble all night and came on strong in the second half.

Key Match ups
Dec 12 OH vs Gibsonburg
Dec 9 OH vs Cardinal Stritch
Dec 20 TC vs MVCDS

To finish top four in TAAC will be really tough OH,TC,CS,Gibsonburg and MVCDS are in for a competitive battle. I don't see one team head and shoulder better than anyone right now.

Tough to be an athletic director, baseball coach or football coach at Stritch today!!
