2017/2018 Akron City Series...

Lots of new faces at the helm, two schools combining teams and plenty of questions surrounding this years version of Akron City Series basketball.

Give us your thoughts on the new coaching appointments, players to watch, top games and top teams as we head for the start of the season...

I am intrigued as to how Kenfield handles its merger. Football was badly handled on the part of APS. Kenfields struggles there were not for want of talent. And they will have the talent to put something together in basketball. it depends on what APS does.

Matt Kersten, an asst. from Norton, is now the head coach. Garfield's best player last year is now at Ellet. Neither Garfield or Kenmore appeared to have much young talent last year.
On the surface it looks like they have their work cut out for them. Bodies shouldn't be an issue though.

It is hard to compete when Coventry/Barberton some Copley takes their best athletes.:Ohno:

And even that is a complicated issue. People are transferring out of Akron Public because Akron Public Schools, especially Kenfield are struggling academically. But Akron Public is struggling because many of the students come from families that are struggling...and me calling them families in many cases may be generous, it can be tough when dad isn't committed to the family. There is no simple fix. So yes, many students will bail to the suburban(ish?) schools, and if they cant move, they will open enroll.

With that being said, even with all that crap, you and I both know Kenfield could have put a better product out on the field in football, if not for the alleged incompetence of the APS board regarding coaching. Kenmore also did have a very decent Basketball team last year that did make the district finals. Even with many athletes leaving to the private schools or Coventry. This Kenfield merger should be capable of a lot, if they are well coached. That is assuming of course that the former Kenmore players can get along well with the Garfield players. I do wish the best for Kenfield this season.

P.S BigWorm, when mentioning Copley, Barberton, and Coventry, how could you miss the elephants in the room, that is SVSM and Hoban? They're the ones doing all the recruiting...not us. You're barking up the wrong tree.

Orangeman89 11-16-17 07:58 PM

I got to the scrimmage late tonight, saw Ellet's last three 10 min. quarters.

Ellet 17
Richmond Hts. 12

SVSM 16
Ellet 15

Ellet 12
Richmond Hts. 10

I did hear Ellet dropped their first two, one each to both teams, didn't get scores.

Pretty standard first scrimmage for each team. Sloppy play at times and a mishmash of players on the court. Glorified practice.
Richmond Hts. was pretty athletic. A little undisciplined. Didn't shoot well.

SVSM - Looked the most polished of the three teams but just as sloppy at times. Not much height or crazy athleticism but they play smart.

Ellet - looked like a team trying to find 4 new starters. Didn't shoot particularly well early. Full court press gave both opponents trouble in the last two quarters.

Most of their kids are coming from the Ellet/East/North area

CoventryTrackXCguy 11-17-17 10:59 AM

You'd be surprised how many SVSM and Hoban kids come out of Firestone Park. Also a very significant portion of SVSM kids are coming out of Firestone/Buchtel as well.

Knights86 12-06-17 01:11 AM

I saw Butchel had a very impressive win over Barberton and Ellet is off to a slow start now at 0-2...tide seems to be turning back to the Griffs in the city series

Knights86 12-06-17 01:25 AM

I need some more info on Buchtels new coach, seems like he knows his stuff! Of course it helps when you get a transfer from stvm.. I saw Ellet dropped there 2nd game tonight to tallmadge! What's wrong ? They did look promising when I watched them at the Hoban Highland scrimmage. They had a really good shooter and a big kid down low that swatted everything! And a good mixture of young athletes !

Early season growing pains at Ellet for sure. 5 new starters and only 2 with any previous varsity experience.
Looks like some kids like Storm Cherry are still trying to find their role.
Tallmadge and Brecksville are two decent teams with senior leadership. Ellet's biggest problem last night was silly turnovers.
There's plenty of talent there, no panic.
They will be a better team down the road and still have to be the City favorite based on talent and depth even though they may a year away from being really good.

Knights86 12-06-17 12:59 PM

yes that is a very tough situation, last years Ellet team was probably the best the program has had. You obviously know more than me but I don't see Next years ellet team or even the year after competeting with the 2017 team. After this year they lose there shot blocker and nobody will come close to being what gareri was and that team was very deep. Two D1 athletes and a lot of high IQ players.

Only one DI player (Gareri) on that team, also the only player with a high basketball IQ. That really prevented them from being better than they were.

As good as Johnson is defensively, he is a liability on offense.
There are some really good players through the freshman class that should help them make some noise over the next few years.
Time will tell....

It felt like they were running too many plays trying to get a dunk for Johnson. He had a couple nice ones, but for the 2 dunks there were probably about 8 turnovers trying to force feed him the ball. Tallmadge doesnít have a center, so they work a man to man help defense. They just simply fronted Johnson and when they tried to enter a pass over the top, the help defender would just steal it or knock it away. The other thing that killed Ellet was their press. It was so loose that Tallmadge broke it easily every time and then had numbers.

Knights86 12-06-17 08:59 PM

Well we will have to agree to disagree, Jones and Williams had very high IQs it appeared, and smith was a bully down low bridges was the only one that appeared to have a low IQ but made up for it with his speed. My belief is that coaching was the reason they didn't make it far. Ellet has had some really bad playoff losses in recent history, usually the better coach teams advance..as for the the future we'll see! Wishing for the best

Orangeman89 12-16-17 05:08 PM

Current standings...

Ellet 4-2 (3-0)
East 2-2 (2-1)
Buchtel 4-1 (2-1)
Firestone 2-5 (2-1)
North 0-4 (0-3)
Kenmore-Garfield 0-6 (0-3)

*East is in second by virtue of their win over Buchtel.

Finally someone agrees that coaching is the problem! Been saying this for years, across the board in all Ellet sports! Itís time for younger coaches to take over Ellet athletics! (Insert coach Haz and smith) Younger guys that identify with the younger generation!

BigWorm 12-19-17 11:14 AM

Smith isnt really that young is he? I have not seen him ever coach anyone up? Haz would be good but no school will give him a chance with his extra curriculars. Fisher has won 3 city titles at a school that had not had a winning season in decades, I would probably allow him to do what he is doing lol/....

Worm you have a SERIOUS hard on for the Smiths buddy! First the son, now the dad WOW! Anywho, Smith is a good coach Iíve seen him at Firestone and correct me if Iím wrong, he had the much ballyhooed class of Ď17 since the were 4th graders and did a helluva job through the years. The kids love and respect him, Iím sure he takes a back seat to fisher and Haz respectively since those are the head guys. Giving the opportunity heíd be a good coach...As far as fisher and his 2 championships (Ď15/Ď17) the program was in the dumps until Haz (and smith)arrived! Give credit where itís do! Damn Jackson I mean Bigworm

BigWorm 12-19-17 09:41 PM

I think you are missing the point. I don’t understand why you want to push fisher out the door? He has got this program rolling. It was terrible for decades, now it is
Good. I have no idea if smith can coach or not, I just stated I’ve never seen him say a word to anyone. I have no idea if Hazzard can coach, I don’t really go to JV games. I know he was a good basketball player but that doesn’t mean Good coach.

Is Johnny Osby related to the Johnny Osby that went to CH or Firestone? If so can he play like him?. He was supposed to go to hoban but something happened and he went to CH I think. Where did this Osby come from?
