Is there any limit on how many pre-state tourney games a hockey team is permitted to play? I know in football it's 10, and 20 in basketball. But what about hockey? I ask because there seems to be a huge discrepancy in the amount of games teams have played. Prior to the state tourney, Ignatius played 36. But Sylvania Northview, currently ranked #2 in the state, has only played 17 (this is based on the state hockey rankings). That's better than two-to-one. What's the deal?

I was basing my question on the number of games listed in www.ushsho.com/ohrank. If that's incorrect, I apologize. But there's still a discrepancy of six between the number of games Ignatius has played and Northview. Back to my original question, is there any limit on the number of regular season games a team can play?

I think that they just have yet to enter the scores from all of Northviews games, but that is a good question, i believe you have to play a certain number of games to be considered a legitimate OSHAA high school team. Try http://www.ohsaa.org/sports/ih/boys/default.asp they might have the requirements

With all the games that each of these teams have played this year, it's amazing that they haven't played each other yet. You'd think that they'd at least find themselves in the same regular season tournament somewhere along the line.

from the OHSAA Ice Hockey Regualtions:

"Regular season games — 18. Invitational tournaments - 2 to 8 teams equals one game; 9 or more teams equals two games. Note: Beginning with the 2012-13 sesason, the maximum number of regular season games shall be 35 plus OHSAA tournament. Each contest played will count in the maximum of 35 contests permitted during the regular season."

So, this year and in previous years, the number of tournaments teams play can create a discrepancy in the total number of games. That changes next year when each game counts as a contest inlcuding tournament games.

Yep, the old exempted tournament trick. Some schools are much better/more aggressive about loading their schedule up with these games than others. Except I thought the rule was for a three-game tournament, one game was counted against the schedule, for a four-game tournament, two games, and so on. Perhaps that's what it was a while back and it was changed.

Regardless, the 35 game rule still gives schools plenty of leeway (after the GCHSHL schedule, still leaves room for 23-25 more games). Most schools won't even come close to touching that number.

The new rule may make things a little bit tricky with the Baron Cup, however, and schools that like to play a lot of games. In the past, schools would just leave a game slot open at the end of the season and they'd be fine regardless of how far they went in the Cup. Now it looks like schools are going to have to leave three game slots open, so it will be interesting to see how that is dealt with.

Bennies - good point about the Baron Cup. I'd think the coaches would lobby to exempt the season-ending league tournaments. They could also have 3rd and 5th, maybe 7th place games in the Baron Cup so all teams can utilize 3 points.
