EagleFan I think we need to turn the page on that 2009-10 thread that was far below what we have become used to over the years.

What can we expect from the Eagles this season?

Returning starters?

Schedule?

Anyone new this season that is ready to make an impact?

What are the thoughts on Coach Troy Gray taking over?

Here you go Edge as some may say this is one of my fortes:
What to expect: A more cohesive unit from the top down, a unit with a clearly stated, singular, mission statement and goal. A team with a renewed fire in the belly, a renewed work ethic and newer system of play.
Returning players:
Defense: Alex D'Angelo, Justin Hoyt, Greenacker, Schmoleans, Harwood
Offense: Riley Egan, Clay Jarrell, Danny O'Sullivan, Alec Gerrard, Connor King, CJ Hoy, Bartholamew (sp?) and Crosby.
Goalie: You have one of the biggest goalies in the league in net in Smith approx. 6'4" - 6'5", should be interesting.

Plus the Baron Cup which is a "one point" tourney where the Eagles will probably pick up at least two more games.

The 18 game limit is stupid in my opinion, but at least the tournament loophole gives teams a chance to play more games.

What happened to the Holy Cross Cup with Gilmour Academy? Did the OHSAA finally call you guys on labeling that as a "tournament"? :p

Are there are a lot of football players that would be key contributors to the hockey program? You guys may be working with a short roster towards the beginning of the season, especially because I see you having two more weeks of football games.

EagleFan
11-24-10, 10:42 AM
I doubt there are more than a couple, but do not know for sure. The Eagles usually skate at least 3 lines, so I would guess they will be OK even if a few guys start a couple weeks late.

St. Edward defeats St. Ignatius 2-1 @ Winterhurst. The Wildcats were on a long winning streak (11 WINS?) and University defeated them 5-4 in OT before the Eagles beat them yesterday.

Not sure, but I think the state rankings have St. Ignatius #2, University #3 and St. Edward #4 behind #1 ranked Toledo team.

I've heard that St. Ed's is going to have to forfeit some hockey games because they scheduled too many. Can anyone confirm that?

EagleFan
01-26-11, 12:45 PM
I hope not. No excuse there. The way the rule works, a tournament with 2-8 teams equals 1 point, a tournament with 9+ teams equals two points. All regular games are 1 point. You get 18 points...fairly easy to calculate.

St. Edward has 13 regular games and 5 tournaments on their schedule. 4 of the tourneys were only 8 teams, but it looks like the season opening Cold Turkey Shootout had more than 8 teams. If this is indeed a problem, you would have to think they should have known it when they played the tourney 6-7 weeks ago. Perhaps they could have canceled the Gilmour game if they had to. Looks like both Trinity and Lake Catholic counted the tourney as two points. However, I think this tourney has a couple divisions and there were only 7 teams in the division with Lake Catholic and St. Edward (Northview, St. Francis, St. Thomas (Ont), Findlay, and ?). If their bracket was only 7 teams, shouldn't that be 1 point? If so, no problems with schedule.

Again, if true they overscheduled, I assume the last team they are scheduled to play (University School) will get the forfeit. Probably a game they could have used heading into Baron Cup.

EagleFan

OK, story clarified... I did not realize the Baron Cup counts as 1 of the 18 points, so yes the Eagles had 19 points scheduled if you look at the schedule above (13 games and 6 tourneys including Baron Cup). Supposedly they were counting the Gilmour game as a scrimmage, but Gilmour was not.

So, the University School game is canceled and US is getting 2 points in the Red North standings.

SJ has dominated Cleveland so far, they have played Ignatius 2 or 3 times, I know that they lost once but they crushed them in the final of that tourny. The team does sound concerned with Ed's because they have not met this year, but they have to get over a huge hump and beat St. Francis first. I would not be surpised to see a Toledo team in the finals. And I think that they would have the upper hand in the finals also.

Really??? Do you think it has anything with the Toledo district winner playing the southern district winner?

Cleveland gets to slug it out in the other semi-final.

ToledoSJ
02-27-11, 04:18 PM
If SJ didn't have to play SF 5 times this year and Northview 4 times they would be #1. Ed's and Ignatius dont have that kind of compitition. I think it's almost a walk through to the finals through the State Semi's. Then the State ship will be tough for the Toledo winner, but no more tough than our district final right now.

Ed's can win a state title, and so can Ignatius but no one else really has a shot. U school is down this year. And whoever else is still left is out of luck

Odd's for a state Title.
SF 50%
Iggy 20%
SJ 15%
Ed's 14%
U-school 1%

ToledoXC
02-27-11, 04:49 PM
St. Francis is probably the best team in the state. That being said, I think SJJ will beat them just based on the fact that SFS has beaten SJJ 6 or 7 times in a row and its tough for a team to beat another team that many consecutive times.

jlach22
02-28-11, 05:53 AM
But St. Edward played:

SFS 4 times
NV 2 times
SJJ 1 time
PLus they played:

SI 3 times
US 3 times

How does that not equate to competition?

arizonawildcat

The latest and presumably last state rankings:

1) St. Francis
2) Ignatius
3) Gilmour
4) Ed's
5) Sylvania
6) University School
7) St. John's

Regarding the recent infusion of Toledo area people on this thread -- granted that this year may see a state champion from Toledo, but don't we hear every year that a Toledo team will win it all, but then a Cleveland team always wins it. Considering that the Toledo team has what essentially is a bye in the semifinals, predicting that a Toledo will reach the finals is not exactly going out on a limb.

ToledoSJ
02-28-11, 07:59 PM
SJ was 2-2 against Northview, we are 0-4 against SF this year, and I believe 2-1 against Iggy (7-2, 7-3, and something like 3-2 in the loss, these aren't totally accurate but it's close to that). SJ has not played Ed's. We killed U school, and SJ won it in 07, and NView was runner up last year, in 09 we lost by 1 in the championship. It's about time we get an easy road to states. Cleveland had it for 35 years. Now they switched it so Sylvania get's the south first.

BG, Findlay, SFS, SJJ, and NV is the toughest league in ohio. Aren't all in the top 10?

arizonawildcat
02-28-11, 08:15 PM
Ohio hockey champions, 2000-2010:

2000 - St. Ignatius
2001 - Shaker Heights
2002 - St. Ed's
2003 - University School
2004 - St. Ed's
2005 - St. Ed's
2006 - Padua
2007 - St. John's
2008 - St. Ed's
2009 - University School
2010 - St. Ignatius

Not exactly domination by Toledo schools, right? Looks like Cleveland over Toledo 10-1, with 5 different Cleveland schools winning titles.

ToledoSJ
02-28-11, 09:07 PM
SJ has been good recently tho. Our league has risen from what it was to the toughest in Ohio the last two years. That doesn't mean teams can't play tough schedules Out of conference. But we are forced to play really good teams in our league, and that is what explains the losses and the low ranking. A team with our amount of losses in Cleveland right now would be the 6th seed (of cleveland). But because Sylvania has been so tough the last two years, our team with 7 or 8, however many losses is still 7th in the state.

In the playoffs, I think everyone agrees that anything can happen. But Sylvania is the toughest region this year. Not too far into the past, but now it is.

EagleSE
02-28-11, 09:36 PM
That might be a fair assessment about the Toledo region since Cleveland is divided into two regions that separte Gilmour and US from Iggy and Eds.

Although I would say the Red North is the most competitive league in Ohio with Ignatius, US, Padua, Eds, Lake Catholic, Strongsville and Walsh.

Hey ToledoSJ, taken right from the SJJ Hockey web site:

Strongsville Padua Holiday Tournament
Dec 17 5:00 pm Strongsville Lake Catholic W 4-1 5-5
Dec 18 8:00 am Strongsville Padua W 5-2 6-5
Dec 18 9:15 pm Strongsville University School T 6-6 6-5-1
Dec 19 10:55 am Strongsville St. Edward L 4-2 6-6-1

Not sure why you think SJJ did not play St, Edward this year.

Again, taken from the SJJ Hockey website:

Kent St. Jesuit Invitational
Nov 26 4:45 pm Kent St. Walsh Jesuit W 7-3 1-0
Nov 27 1:30 pm Kent St. St. Ignatius L 4-1 1-1
Nov 27 9:00 pm Kent St. St. Xavier W 8-1 2-1
Nov 28 1:30 pm Kent St. Championship vs. St. Ignatius W 4-2 3-1

These were the only 2 times you played St. Ignatius.

One more time from the website:

Nov 20 11:00 am Tam O'Shanter University School L 10-2 SCRM
Dec 18 9:15 pm Strongsville University School T 6-6 6-5-1
Jan 15 7:00 pm Tam O'Shanter University School (Rink 1) W 2-1 13-7-1

OK, 1st game was a scrimmage. But a Tie and a 2-1 win does not equate to "we killed US".

ToledoSJ
03-01-11, 02:30 PM
That's last year's maybe? Because I go to the school, and the whole team talked about not knowing what to expect from Ed's because they have not met this year. And we drilled Iggy 7-2 once. Everything in that post contridicts what players from the team have said to me. They did say that they lost to Iggy in a tourny but then won in the finals.... I only know what the team tells me, and games that I have been to at Tamo.

It's possible that I was given wrong info, and mislead to think that we are better than it says but I have never seen a score book, or stat sheet from a game. I appreciate the website, I just don't know what to say.

No one can get to them early, SJ plays every game from behind and we couldn't pull it out. I could see them winning the state ship by 5. A very fast and good team. Good luck Ed's we're pulling for you.

Question:

With the Columbus District so much weaker than the other 3 districts (Brooklyn, Kent, Sylvania), why don't they draw the matchups from a hat when they get to this point. The team that plays Columbus gets a gift of great value. Why should that gift go to Toledo every year?

EagleSE

That sounds way to reasonable.

So, I have a great dilemma on my hands. I am a SEHS grad. It's all about the E. Moved to Toledo several years ago and my boys go to SFS. So, I root for SEHS and SFS on Saturday. IF they bioth win, I have to deal with the same thing that happened in 2008 when they played each other in Columbus. Anyone remember the big fight at the end of the game?

I thought they did do a random draw? St. Eds played the Toledo district in the semis when they won in 2008. I just assumed that 3 years in a row of Toledo getting Columbus was a coincidence. No?

Cleveland played Columbus for many years I thought it was like 25 years, that could be way off, i'm not sure. It's just been recently that
Sylvania has had to play Columbus. Columbus used to be tougher than Sylvania too. It's just bad luck for Cleveland that Columbus is really down and Sylvania is the 2nd best district. This year I think that they have the best team tho. Beating Gilmore may not be a dis-advantage, they would have the tough experience... On the other hand if games are back to back, Ed's could be more tired from playing the all out game the night before the final.

fwiw...

It appears that a true southern district didn't come into existence until 2003. Before that, the Frozen Four appeared to be two Cleveland area regions, a Toledo region and a Findlay/BG region which probably included teams from C-bus, Cincy, etc.

From '03 through '08, the team from the southern region played either Kent or Brooklyn. Since '09, the southern region has played the Toledo region in the semis.

Fwiw...no team from south of Findlay ever made it to the Frozen Four before 2003 EXCEPT Centerville in '79 and '96. Centerville 1979 is also the only team from outside of Cleveland/Toledo/Findlay/BG to EVER win a Frozen Four game...and they won both of their games, winning the state title in 1979.

So, if you get the Columbus district in the semis, you have to do something historic to lose. They should draw names from a hat to see who gets the break.

I agree that SFD is the favorite, but when has Columbus EVER been better that Sylvania? It's only been around 8 years and is rarely even competitive. I would guess that if you rank the Frozen Four teams each year, the Columbus district team would be #4 every year since that district started.

by Columbus I meant south, so it was Findlay district or BG. Sylvania hasn't really been that good in Hockey past 15 years ago were they? And by good they were 3rd for many years out of 4 districts.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, the BG district was usually better, primarily due to the presence of Bowling Green HS.

OK, forget ToledoSJ, his team is gone. Although, I was at the Tam Saturday, the Titans played a good game. They played their hearts out in the 3rd period. The end of the 2nd killed them. Awesome venue, both teams played well.

Anyone from SEHS going Saturday? I have 2 skins in the game. As I said, I am an SEHS grad, but my boys go to SFS. Rooting for both the Eagles and the Knights Saturday.

Any good place to go on Saturday night in CBus?

Congratulations to TSFD on the winning the Ohio State Hockey Championship. You have a great team and it was a hard fought victory.

That said, I want to congratulate the St. Ed Hockey team! What a performance this weekend! You guys are great! Playing a 4 OT match and then coming back the next day and taking the #1 seed to OT was a true testament to your tenacity, drive, commitment and spirit! As a St Ed alum, I am very proud of every player and coach who gave so much to make this a special year. Hold your heads high because I bet TSFD respects an opponent as worthy as you!

You will be back in Columbus next year!

I was in Cbus, was in Nationwide from 11:30 until 6:20 on Saturday.

SFS started slow put played their game an won pulling away against Oleantangy Liberty.

SEHS had an awesome 1st quarter in Game #2. #18 is a great player for the Eagles. I think they got a little conservative in the 3rd period, Couple of bad penalties forced OT. 1, 2, 3 then 4 ot's. The Eagles dominated every OT, but the GA goalie played great. The goal in the 4th OT was beautiful by our boys. Great win.

Champinship game, SFS scores 20 seconds into the game. Funky shot that jumped the Goalie. SEHS scores in the 2nd on a tipped goal. After that, both goalies stooed on their head. I have been to a lot of high school hockey games. I have never seen this much hitting. The referees let it go until the 3rd period. I think after the 2nd they told both coaches that they were going to call it closer. Many penalties in the 3rd.

SEHS gets called for a penalty with 3 minutes left in OT, which honestly could have been called a penalty shot. So, SFS has a power play and scores on a scrum in front of the goal.

Unbelievable weekend. The Eagles were awesome Saturday afternoon. What guts. The SFS fans hoped SEHS would be tired Sunday, but honestly SEHS was still faster. I think SFS was just a tiny bit better.

I got my moneys worth.

I'd just like to give a word of congratulations to the Eagle Hockey Team for a suprising 2010-2011 season ending in a state runner-up! It was two of the best games I've seen in a while with the semi final in 4 ot and the finals going to OT! Two tough goals in the finals for SFHS. I would also like to give a word of congratulations to my boy Coach Hunek who has now coached 4 state championship games in the last 4 seasons he has coached in (maple heights oc football, st. ignatius hockey 2010 champs, st. eds football oc 2010 champs, st. eds hockey 2011 runner up) pretty amazing stuff, nice job coach!

I do not understand why the SEHS support was so minimal. I know we had a big basketball game Saturday. Probably explains the low crowd Saturday. But why the lack of support for the Eagles on Sunday? SFS had a huge crowd. We were lucky to have 1/5 of their crowd. I know we have been there many times, but this was a State Championship. It was kind of embarassing.

EagleSE

Always a mystery on the support for our teams when they go for the title in Columbus, maybe we are a little spoiled because of our success. Who knows. I did attend the game, was interested to see a decent crowd, but they certainly did not sit together and that's probably the problem with the size of the arena. But I do know that St. Eds fans support our teams, it's just tough for a number of them because our teams go so far into the play-offs...especially this winter.
