You have to like St. Charles' chances of repeating this year.

GOLDEN MOE
10-13-10, 10:09 PM
Moeller wins the Southwest District with a district record 287 and wins by 15 over second place St. X (302). Centerville finished third. Moeller qualifies for the 9th consecutive year, while X advances for the 7th straight. Two-time defending state champ Korey Ward (Lakota West) and Michael Wolf (Moeller) tie for Medalist.
Moeller has to be considered one of the favorites to win State this year. One through Five they are as strong as anyone.

69-72-72-74 is amazing. not to mention, the 5th score was also a 74. that's 1 over par for ALL 5 players as a team. astounding in high school golf. I played golf in D3 at John Carroll and very rarely did a team break 290. There were lots of 295's etc, but 287 is really playing!
9 straight years.......wow. now it's time to actually bring home the trophy! Been a top 5 team all these years, time to be #1!
Central District will send:
St Charles 300
Dublin Coffman 301
Dublin Jerome ~305?

Cardinals boys golf team rallies and advances to state

The St. Charles Preparatory boys golf team found itself in fourth place midway through the Division I district boys golf tournament Tuesday at Apple Valley. It was four strokes behind Mount Vernon, two behind Dublin Jerome and one behind Pickerington North.
That was a precarious position for the defending district and state champion, as only the top three teams and top three low-scoring individuals not on qualifying squads advance to the state tournament Oct. 22-23 at Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course.
But instead of folding under the pressure, the Cardinals rallied to shoot a 300 and finish ahead of Dublin Coffman (301), Dublin Jerome (305), Mount Vernon (308), Upper Arlington (309), Watkins Memorial (312), Pickerington North (314), Marietta (314), Hilliard Davidson (317), Westerville Central (331), Hilliard Bradley (340) and Athens (345).
Mount Vernon's Charlie Phillips (68) was medalist, and Marietta's Nick Huggins (72) and Hilliard Davidson's Jared Wissinger (73) also qualified to state as individuals.
"Last year, we were a Cinderella story and we had a lot of fun, but this year our team is all-business, and we knew we could get this done," St. Charles senior Austin Cuervo said. "Our team is stronger and more mature than it was last year, and we're some of the best scrappers around. We knew we were capable of playing better on the back nine, and we were able to prosper on the last nine holes."
Competing for St. Charles were Cuervo (73), Michael Ricaurte (75), Matt Moosavian (76), Nate Yankovich (76) and Alex Carpenter (77).
"I always get more nervous for the district than the state because there are so many good teams here," coach Anthony Mampieri said. "I had a feeling when I saw the weather forecast that we were going to have a shootout here and we got just that."
After shooting a 156 on the front nine, Coffman bounced back to shoot a 145 (1-over) on the back nine to finish second and qualify for state for the second consecutive season.
"We were in sixth place after nine holes and we were all sweating it, because the competition in our district is so good," Coffman coach David Woodmansee said. "But this is one of the mentally-toughest teams out there, and they rebounded to post a phenomenal score on the back nine."
Competing for Coffman were Satoshi Tanaka (71), Logan Holt (75), Jack Sparling (77), Thomas Dunne (78) and Thomas Schindler (78).
"We asked Logan Holt to lead us off as a senior, and he played extremely well to set the tone for us," Woodmansee said. "Thomas Schindler birdied the last two holes to shoot six strokes better on the back nine. Thomas Dunne was four strokes better on the back nine, and Satoshi improved his score by two strokes there."
Jerome shot a 155 on the back nine, after shooting a 150 on the front nine, but managed to qualify for state for the seventh time in its seven years of existence.
"St. Charles and Dublin Coffman made their run to put us third in our group, and we were two strokes behind Mount Vernon at the turn, so we were really sweating it out over the final three holes, because we were leaking oil and making a lot of bogeys," Jerome coach Matt Schneider said. "When you have the tradition that we have, not making it would have been a huge disappointment, so I'm glad we were able to hold off Mount Vernon by three shots."
Chad Merzbacher (75), Mert Selamet (76), Scott Reed (77), Brady Bohl (77) and Jared Howard (77) competed for Jerome.
"We didn't have anyone with a 71 or a 72, but our depth has been our strength all year, and it came through for us again," Schneider said. "The thing that got us out is we didn't have to count a score in the 80s like most of the other teams did."
