Congrats to all those swimmers going on to the next level. Now the hard work REALLY starts! Don't let up on your training over the summer. Just remember:

1. If you are on scholarship, your coaches EXPECT you to score at conference. Unfortunately, it appears that less than half of the scholarship freshmen I have watched actually did that.

2. This is no longer high school. Nearly every meet has state caliber athletes in every lane.

3. You are no longer the top dog! Look at your new teammates' times from this season, and then look at your conference finals times, and then look at the NCAA qualifying times.

4. VERY few walk-ons score at their conference meet. Rhodenbaugh is the only one from the class of 2009 that I can think of that might have done that (don't know if he was on scholarship or not). If that is your goal, be prepared to really step up your training.

Schuttinger to Eastern Michigan

That's a big recruit for EM. His times would have placed at this year's MAC championship: 2nd 2IM, 2nd 100fly, 6th 200fly.

That's an unbelievable recruiting class for Ohio State. If anyone else is going to swim in college that you know of who isn't on the list, mention them too. I'm particularly interested in the St. X guys since they had the most seniors.

Here are all the seniors from X's sectional lineup:

Sam Lipari (200 IM, 100 breast) - Alabama
Alex Miller (200 free, 500 free) - Ohio State
Sean Drake (200 IM, 100 back) - USC
Mike Tontillo (200 free, 500 free) - Alabama
Cole Dennis (50 free, 100 free) - Fresno State
Max Bierman (50 free, 100 free) - Air Force Academy
Craig Gorsuch (200 free, 100 free) - Virginia Tech
George Morrison (50 free, 100 free) - Depauw
Patrick Kimutis (100 breast) - Loyola Chicago
Michael Conway (100 fly) - Loyola Chicago
Shane Smith (50 free) - Ohio State

Dennis, Bierman, Gorsuch, Kimutis, and Conway have all chosen to retire from swimming. It's my understanding that everyone else either has a spot on their college team or will try to get one in the fall.

Wow, the Big Ten really got a lot of talent this year:

Zach Kelch: Michigan
Brandon Williams: Michigan State
Sandy Whitaker: Minnesota
Sam Kocher: Ohio State
Kevin Lancki: Ohio State
Alex Miller: Ohio State
Ty Perkins: Ohio State
Jacob Schuster: Ohio State
Shane Smith - Ohio State
John Spangler: Ohio State
Garrett Trebilcock: Ohio State
John Vigar: Ohio State

That is six state champs either this year or last and over 300 points scored by these guys at the state meet this year. How many points do you think this group can score at the Big Ten meet next year?

OhioSWIM002

I don't think everyone has retired. Cole Dennis is still swimming since he simply cannot quit and, last I heard, Max Bierman was going to try out for the team at the Air Force Academy.

I just heard on Friday that he is not going to Easter Michigan. Don't know any more detail.

Indian River Community College in Florida.

Interesting program, 36 consecutive NJCAA men swim team championships. Winning time in the 100 fly this year was 50.48, so he could be a juco national champ next year. And it's not far from U Florida.

Is there some issues with Schuttinger? Something doesn't seem right that for as talented of a swimmer as he is, that he would be going to IRCC. Great swim program on the JUCO level, but nothing else. Must be hoping to perform well there and move on to bigger and better things. Plus their coach just bolted for Auburn..where does this leave the program?

He's probably going to JUCO for same reason he left St Charles.

You need to pass ACT tests and core courses etc with certain levels to be an athlete at a Division one school.
http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/af238a804e0b869285bcf51ad6fc8b25/Quick+Reference+Sheet+for+IE+Standards+-+6-18-09.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CACHEID=af238a804e0b869285bcf51ad6fc8b25

JUCO's usually help you get to that level and enable you to handle Div one demands as it is very difficult to be successful in the pool and in your studies at a Div one school if you are not prepared.

Good Luck to Nick, hopefully his swimming will get him to the next level in the pool and in the classroom

Schools have started posting their rosters, and some are only a couple weeks away from their first dual meet. Anyone know what happened to Eric Huffman?

http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-swim/mtt/mich-m-swim-mtt.html

He is no longer listed on the Michigan roster and his facebook says he is in Columbus. Is he transferring to Ohio State ... is he done with U Michigan?

Yes, Huffman has enrolled in Ohio State and is working out with the team. Add another great freestyler to the Bucks. I believe that even though Michigan released him, he still has to sit for a season.

Looks like OSU has posted their roster, and Huffman is there. I guess that extra year of eligibility might not be a bad thing...it allows people like Farhbach, Elliot, Holmes, Phillips, Schnur to graduate ahead of him and open up a spot on an A relay.

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=89210&SPID=10398&DB_OEM_ID=17300&SORT_ORDER=5&Q_SEASON=2010&PRINTABLE_PAGE=

There are a LOT of freshmen from Ohio, but Kocher and Shane Smith are not listed. And three Ohio IM'rs from last year's freshman lineup are missing too. Could be the roster isn't complete yet.

Huffman is now at Ohio State. Not a freshman signing, but certainly adds to an already deep group coming in for the Buckeyes.

I would find it hard to believe where Tontillo made the roster but Lipari didnt, both are stupendous swimmers, but Lipari is faster and more versatile, therefore he would be more valuable to a coach. Lipari probably quit swimming if he isnt on the roster, or he got a season ending injury

I didn't notice this when it happened, but I just looked up these national championship results:

http://www.njcaa.org/Teams/swimming_-_diving/2011/2011_NJCAA_Results.htm

Nick ends his freshman year with eight national championships:
200 IM
100 fly
100 free
400 medley relay
800 free relay
200 medley relay
400 free relay
team champions
