Moeller made a good move joining with the Columbus league.

why?
Over the last 5 years the swohshl has been the superior league...

Finding themselves down 1-0 at the start of the third, the Bombers rallied back to tie the score; but then gave up 3 unanswered goals to lose 4-1 and end their season.

What's with Sycamore running up the score (19-1) on Watterson. Could have backed off with the 10 goal lead and let the mercy take its course?

asltw
02-21-10, 11:50 AM
The Sycamore Varsity team stopped scoring at that point, but they had called up several J.V. players who were just itching for goals. For example, one of the last scorers was a J.V. senior having has 18th birthday, so seeing him score was great.

I agree with you, though, that scores shouldn't be that high past the mercy rule, but in their own league (league games, nowhere near as important as playing well in state) they were outscored 154-2 in 12 games...

TimtheEnchanter

Watterson probably should have held off from becoming a varsity program. I did notice that the Sycamore bench seemed longer/fuller.

I agree. They should have spent at least a year as a Junior Varsity team... their goalie played very well, considering he started this year.

I heard Beavercreek won in triple overtime... must have been a good game. St. X lost, Tally won. How did the other teams do?

TimtheEnchanter
02-21-10, 06:28 PM
Sycamore 19 Watterson 1 - mercy at end of 2nd
Beavercreek 4 Gahanna 3 - 3 OT - A real heartbreaker for Gahanna (esp Seniors). Gave up a 3-2 lead at the end of 2. Beavercreek has now beaten them 6 times in a row including 2 in OT (one double, this one triple), two on Nationwide Arena ice, and knocked out of District two years in a row. Maybe their Coach should stop picking to play Beavercreek ?
UA 4 St Charles 2
Jerome 4 Troy 0
Centerville 4 Springboro 1
Moeller 7 vs Olentangy 2
Liberty 1 vs Talawanda 2 -biggest upset so far - Humfleet game winner in 1st OT- according to Talawanda Twitter
USA 5 vs Canada 3 - well that might be the biggest upset !!!

hawkman
02-22-10, 12:03 AM
talawanda had a great game, won 2-1 in ot. sens and humfleet with goals. went down to the wire in the 1st ot. but a great game to watch . Moeller will have their hands full next weekend.

02-22-10, 07:52 AM
Yeah i agree. The moeller tallawanda game will be an interesting game. Moeller beat Tally 8-2 earlier on in the season but you can throw out all other games and records at this point! Should be a good one

Not surprised Sycamore ran up the score...they've been padding their individual stats all season while playing weak opponents...did they play anyone north of Columbus this year? On purpose, not in a tourney?

Great that 5 of the 8 teams left are SWOHSHL teams! Good luck!

Congrats to Talawanda for beating Liberty, must have been a crazy good game to end in OT

As astlw said varsity stopped scoring after 12 goals we wanted the mercy to get home. JV players had the rest of our goals as stated above.

It is hard to believe they were so obtuse. It took 12 goals before Sycamore knew a win was coming and decided to give JV some game experience? And all with the goal to get home 30 minutes sooner? I have a lot of respect for Sycamore's talent and personally know and like many of their players and parents and doubt you speak for the team.

Congratulations to Watterson for having the courage to play Varsity this year in their inaugural season...earning their 7 returning players valuable experience heading into next season. I hope they have a chance to play Sycamore next season.

I honestly dont think any one player can speak for an entire team at any point, but I do feel for what the watterson players are going through this season. Before I transfered to Sycamore my past team was 1-35-0 with only 28 GF to 287 GA. When you are in a situation like that as a team its hard to keep moving forward as a player. I feel it was a positive step for the school to obtain a hockey team, but with most of the team being made up with many first year skaters I feel they may have jumped into a high powered league they can't currently hang with.

Watterson is about the skill level of the st. x developmental team.. It is pretty amazing to me how they where even granted entry into the Columbus League. From watching them play i was just hoping that no one would get hurt from either team.. Games like this really are not fun for either team. Anyways.... with the teams left who do you all think will make it to the final four? or at least the district finals?

sychockey33

From a Sycamore prospective I think a Sycamore v Moeller district final would be intense

Just wondering, do you count St. X in that group? Is that why you made that comment, because Sycamore scored so many against you?

They play their schedule as it is to limit the travel. High school hockey shouldn't consume your life, in my opinion. Are you looking for props that St. X often travels far? If so, congratulations on traveling three hours to get smacked... there are plenty of competitive teams here, and you could have saved yourself some gas money.

Back to the point of this thread...
The final four is truly up for grabs, and every team from here on out is a threat. Every single team can win any game that they play. Good luck to all SWOHSHL teams in the next round.

correction theres only 4 swohshl teams left, tally, beavercreek, sycamore, and centerville. But every game in the next round could go either way, and it doesn't matter, sycamore has yet to prove themselves against the northern districts like centerville tieing st francis. but good luck to the swoshl teams next week, especially beavercreek.

So, Sycamore had a 6.4 on schedule which ranks them after Coffman and Jerome and tied for 3rd with Moeller & Liberty. St X comes it at an admirable eighth (sp?) at 5.9. Hats off to X and Talawanda (6.2 -7th) for staying the course with schedule. Centerville played a tough schedule too. BTW, University School and St Ed's were tops at 9.3. Columbus District has a long way to go to get those numbers up. The top ten teams in Ohio all play schedules in the mid 8's.

I know, off thread topic here; but the rankings that Tim provided are really interesting. They don't count mismatch games, which St X notably had, esp in their travels...so the strength of schedule is skewed somewhat. X's travels north were invites to a Jesuit and St John's tourneys, ones the team was loath to ignore, despite our weakness, so that the invitations would continue in future years. The invite to the Gilmour tournament was declined, with hopes they would consider X again. Yes, it was worth the time to travel far and the gas money, even to get smacked, for the team comraderie, the ability to see and play alongside such hockey talent, and hopes to gain more awareness of southern Ohio hockey's development. If you're playing high school sports, it should be with a passion to develop, not just win large every weekend. I would rather play teams with more skills than less, the learning opportunity is just that much greater.

I think Sycamore has great potential to move through the district, just not the experience needed against tougher Northern teams to win, if they should advance to the Frozen Four. I'd love to see any Cincinnati team, SWOHSHL or Moeller, make it over the Columbus teams. We're all tired of the trash talk about our district's berth in the tourney.

i was personally at the sycamore game, and thomas worthington has no business with a varsity program. and i can't really blame sycamore, they got the mercy in the 1st period. but against a team like that its hard not to score. if they really wanted to run it up. that game wouldve been much uglier. i thought they showed respect for TW by not taking it to easy on them. but not being jerks at the same time.

If you really want to get nit-picky, all of those teams were SWOHSHL teams at one point...and if memory serves TW won their district before the CHC ever formed.
This just speaks to the incredible growth of the sport all-around! It's exciting to see this!

Puck Daddy is Correct! Thomas Worthington was the 2002-2003 SWOHSHL Regular Season League Champion with a 16-0 record. They were 30-7 overall that year. In the Troy District (precursor to Columbus District) , they beat an upstart Beavercreek 2-1 to escape a round 2 disaster (bye in first round) district loss. Beat Centerville 6-2. Beat Moeller 4-3 to take District Championship.

2003-2004 the CHC was formed from the Columbus teams and the SWOHSHL remained with teams from Troy, Dayton, and Cincinnati.

Yeah i agree that the Moeller Tally game will be close. But Moeller as a very strong defense, 2 really solid offensive lines, and 2 solid goalies. Tally really isn't as good all around as Moeller, but im sure the game will be a good one. It is gonna be who wants it most in these final games, because any one of these teams can come out on top with a win.

well at this time of the year its all about goaltending. like in the liberty talawanda game, it should have been 6-5 in ot, not 2-1. but both goalies played great games and as a result kept both teams in it. so i think all the games left will be mostly in their hands, like sycamore beavercreek, mcclure is good enough to shut a team down, and as long as creek can score a goal or two thats it. same with yeakle at talawanda, hes been off and on this year, he played well in some games not so well in games like moeller earlier this year, it'll be interesting to see.

TimtheEnchanter
02-26-10, 10:04 AM
You certainly hate to put it all on the goalie's shoulders, but when a goalie stands on his/her head it makes all the difference. Example: Canada Women win Gold on shut-out by Szabados. She stopped them all, Defense help some, but she was on. American goalie played well, but could not put up the goose egg. Keys to playoff hockey - stay out of the box, stop odd man rushes, pass the puck, put shots on net...
