Those kids and coaches really shined last night at the meet last night. I was really impressed by the coaching and kids. I haven't seen the kids wrestle in years. And the improved skills have risen a great deal. good job... And I will point out those kids had some swagger every time they went out on the mat.

That little guy Ben Lee has some raw talent.
spartans87
12-09-09, 07:41 AM
Thanks Polster. I was shocked as anyone with what happened last night, we were not supposed to win those. Ben is a raw talent, isnt he? Your son the self proclaimed "man child" looked good as well. A lot of the young guys and and some 8th graders who werent that good last year, stepped up for us. Todd looked good for a whole match not once, but twice as well. He may not run hard for us, but he is starting to listen to our advice this year on technique. We looked solid last night, but we will see what Mogadore and Massillon have for us tonight. Hopefully that swagger you mentioned will continue. They were proud of themselves and they should have been. They are inexperienced right now, but your right the confidence level is there for a change.

Great job MS Spartans..
Do they have a full team? What weight is Todd wrestling?
Who is coaching the MS team?
any word on the HS team and their numbers?...
We (well Lake MS) was at a 12 team tourney in Claymont last Saturday they did well Zach went 4-1 @205 losing 3 to 1 in the semi's to the kid who took 1st pinning everyone else as did Zach, he ended up winning 3rd he was not in shape or aggressive enough but not bad for the first real matches in 2 years against some real stiff competition just one fish in 5 matches... this definatley is not youth anymore...
polster,
I can see a Zach and Larry match on the horizon some where down the road this season @205... It will be interesting to see how the 2 react to having to wrestle each other...

Match is at Springhill at 5:30. We brought the good mat to the school. We felt it was time they wrestled a meet in their own school. They have earned the right to use their own school for a meet. There is a basketball game before the match. Should be a decent crowd.

Hey poltser. I was drilling with you son last night to get him some real competition and feel for moves since we have no one his side and strength. I am not as young as I used to be. He pinched a nerve in my shoulder and kicked me in the mouth and bloodied my lip. You will have to come and drill with him from now on. I have been expectations for him this year.

Experience of Zach is key. If Larry could stop from getting pinned in the first 2 periods his stamina may help. Agreed... Larry does have freakish stamina for a big kid... Zach took 1st @ Wadsworth MS pool tourn this Saturday. He was pumped I was proud.. I hope it inspires him to start to put in the extra effort in practices that will make him become as good as he should be.
Keep me updated as to when the next MS matches are this week, I want to come see the boys wrassel...

Do the teachers at Springhill or Schrop not believe in guiding/mentoring kids anymore or are they just there to drop the hammer and make examples of kids when they drift out of line with the rest of the flock... these people make a good living being teachers they go thru years of training to properly handle kids and all they seem to do is take the easy road for themselves and kick the kids to the principals office and certain negative reinforcement.. instead of using some proven methods to help inspire them to become better students.. I am not saying sometimes things dont need to be handled but some times the kids need a chance to make amends with alternative methods not all kids march to the same drummer..

Nothing. We couldnt get in anything after the ones we were schedule for were cancelled. January is crazy though, get ready for two or three a week. I am trying to verify the schedule so I can get it out. It changes weekly with schools cancelling things and us trying to add things to fill our points. We are trying to reschedule the tri at Springhill that got cancelled. I want them to have a match at their own school this year.

I'm not, he had a reason. He said he wanted mat time in front of the home crowd since it was his only home match of the season. I just dont like the fact that he can do that and get away with it. How about your son though. He amuses me, but I have to keep his temper under control after the matches of all things. He is hilarious and they cant match his strength which amazes me. Tristen and Todd look good too. We really need a good heavy weight though.

nice job last night coaches and wrestlers.. not having a full squad is the only reason you lost that close team match to coventry... the kids seemed to be listening to thier coaches and running basic moves well. I was impressed by LB and how aggressive he wrestled.. PM TW TB all looked improved over what I have seen from them in the past there is a nice core of potential district placers and SQ for the HS in that 8th grade class IMO they are the start of the rebuilding of the wrestling program at SHS and thats not to take away from the good HS wrestlers now competing (which there are a couple) but that 8th grade class is the first class with more than just the one or two good wrestlers.. they should usher in some pride and rejuvinate intersest in wrestling at SHS with their potential success in the future. good luck and go Spartans!

We wrestled at Crenshaw duals tourney tonight. It was the hardest night of my life coaching and my sons wrestling life. It was with heavy heart but we both needed it at this time. The team showed their character both on the mat and off and made it memorable. We finally have a trophy for the school trophy case. It couldnt have happened at a better time. If you have a son that wrestles for me let them know even though I cant tell them right now. They made me proud to have them represent our school and me and the other coaches tonight. I will forever be indebted to them for what they did tonight even though they will never understand and really know what they did.

It was a 3 point difference. Payton, Todd and Larry had pins that really gave us the extra points needed. Tristen had a good match as well and won on points he wrestled good and smart. Colton had a wierd match that I thought was going to end up in a fight rather than a match. Opponent was slapping the head a poking the eyes. Went to OT, then a ride out situation. Team is looking good though. We also have a lot of parents and fans travelling to see them this year. Thursday will be a good measuring stick for us. We have Woodridge and Garfield in a Tri Match. I heard they are both pretty good this year. Especially Garfield.

Deadline for entry is noon Febuary 18th...
After your PTC tourney the season is basically over if your not going to compete for JH states and JH states is not governed by the OHSAA it is ran by the OAC you must qualify for the state tournament thru one of their district tournaments which the link above will walk you thru entry.. The competition is the best you will see almost all of Ohio's best JH wrestlers from every part of the state compete in this tourney. I believe the top 6 placers from each weight and from each district qualify for state tournament...

71.. whats Larry got to expect for competition if he qualifies for state? besides Zach.
locally the 205 weight class is weaker but state wide there are about 6-10 very talented wrestlers with the bulk of the better ones in 205 from the Cincy area the 2 favorites would be Gunner Lay from Moeller and Jerry Thornberry from ??? both were JH state champs as 7th graders.. States will be a meatgrinder in 205 with big strong quick wrestlers with lots of experiance. Larry will do well if he trains hard and gets with a practice partner who can push him and give him a good look at what he can expect at states... I think I know a wrestler that can do that:) ... It would benefit them both to have some mat time together, after this weekends PTC and Federal League MS tournaments we can see if we can make that happen in some form.

ok so how did the Spartans do at the PTC's?
spartans87
01-31-10, 09:51 AM
Not good. It was almost like we didnt want to be there. Payton couldnt get out of his emotional rollercoaster (3rd), Tristen got stuck in a meat grinder weight class(4th), Todd lost twice and I am still trying to figure out how he did that(4th). I think it has something to with not listening to us. And Larry just got beat in the semis because of inexperience. He is the meanest person I have met on the mat. When he learns a few more moves he will be unstoppable(3rd). Colton took (3rd), Holmes (6th), Jenkins (6th) and our heavywieght took 6th without winning a match. WTH? There are some really good wrestlers in the PTC now though. We just didnt have desire yesterday for a multitude of reasons I guess. Maybe Polster has a different view frm the stands, but I was just not hapy with the effort and focus our kids had yesterday. And I say that about all of them from the top to the bottom of the lineup. See you at the qualifier.

I liked that tourney. My camcorder batt would not stay charged so I only got a few recorded. Payton man handled that kid he lost to. I still dont understand where he got those points to win. LB lost to the kid from Norton. I will put that match up and the ones i got before tomorrow. Todd pinned himself from my view not paying attention trying to get the kid pinned.
spartans87
02-01-10, 09:12 AM
Todd is a strange one to figure out. He did get himself pinned. I dont know if you can hear me all the time that he is to high when he rides legs. He just slid over the guys head onto his back and had his legs stuck. One day he will listen to a coach hopefully. He has everything but a head on his shoulders rights now. He will figure it out. I agree Payton did handle the kid, took him down at will and controlled him. But he would get a blank look on his face when he would look at my mom in the stands and stop wrestling for a few seconds. He would then get in trouble for a few seconds. Then when he realized what he did and snap out of it,he would get a reversal and take charge again , but then fall off again. It was not like him at all. I need to get his head straight before the qualifier. Oh and did you hear me yell at Larry in the last match when he came up with his fist clinched like he was going to throw down with the dude. I had to tell him he already had him bleeding. He cracks me up talking to him on breaks in the matches. I dont know if you could tell with me laughing at him all the time.

no doubt 87 LB is so fun to watch he was bringing tears to my eyes yesterday i was lauging so hard because of his aggressiveness and demeanor everyone from Lake was cheering for him it was cool he is going to be a force in HS... Payton was awesome ytd too and he is only going to get better could not figure out how he lost that one match he was working that kid for 2 and half periods! I have been looking for some other district results and the only one I saw was Moeller their weight brackets were barely half full only 4 kids at 209 we had 16 and some of the good wrestler I thought would be at 209 from there were 176... Brecksville is the one I am waiting to see then I think we will know better where this district stood overall but reguardless of what happened yesterday its what happens at states that counts! polster and 87 pm me if you want our hotel info so you guys can stay where we are but I was told rooms are going fast because of limited hotels in the thriving metropolis of Marion Ohio...

What are your boys trying out for in track? Ldog is going out for what ever he can get and I don't think to many of the positions are taken.

Moe is hoping for the 100M and 200M Hurddles along with the 100M sprint. Also would like to be on the relay team. The shorter Relay, whichever that is. Not real good with my track knowledge.

Is going to run the 1600 and 800. After that I think he wants to run the 200 hurdles and long jump maybe. Although the coaches may have other ideas for him with the second two. Who knows what will happen though. But he will definately run the 1600 (1st in the league meet last year) and the 800 (2nd in the league last year. I would like to see him save himself a little this year and run some shorter races in the other two events.
Irish boy will most likely run the sprints like he said. Probably along with the 4x100. And Polster I know Larry wants to run the sprints and he probably can. But they have some guy who was a discus and shot guy at Kent States helping out. He might want to look at throwing a little bit this year with his help. I think he could dominate at those events and get some points for the team in the league. But who knows with himm he is a strange one to predict. He is a lot faster than people would guess.

Moe87 should do well in the 100 or 200. Payton also should shatter some distance records this year as long as he doesn't toy with his opponents. Larry is trying out for the shot, but I urged him to definitely give the hurdles and 100 a try.

I agree he should do a couple running events. But with his strength, size and agility he should for sure try thorwing as well. He could be really good I think.
