They have your face in the webster dictionary next to Optimist.
However the swim team is much improved from 10 years ago, they do a nice job and we should be proud of their accomplishments.
I think hockey will be pretty good and we will once again contend for the state title. Certainly hope we can keep all the Eagles playing for St. Eds and not one of those junior teams.

Eds will compete for a state title this year because in reality in any given year there are only 7-10 legit contenders in hockey. I think everyone here can name them, though the contender(s) from NWO tends to rotate on a yearly bass a bit from about three or four usual suspects.
Looking at the schedule, it looks a bit incomplete. I suspect there will be a tournament around Thanksgiving. Turkey Bowl Red, perhaps?
EagleFan
10-21-09, 06:15 AM
You are probably correct about the Turkey Bowl Red at Iceland, but it was not on their schedule so I did not list it. If I counted the games the right way (tourneys usually count as 1 or 2 games, despite playing 4 or so), I think they still have room for the Turkey Bowl, plus it does not make sense to start the season a full week late.

The Eagles played well against SFS Saturday. Whidden pulled his starting goalie midway through the game, just to split playing time. Score was 1 - 1 at the time. They lost 3 - 1, but the last goal was an empty net goal. Ref's called it tight. Probably due to the bad blood from States 2 years ago. Lot of penalties. The Championship game was Sunday morning at 8:30. I think the Eagles just mailed that one in to get out of town. SFS looks good.

I was working the scoreboard on Rink 2 , across from the St. Edward vs. Dublin Coffman game on rink 1. From what I remember the final was 5-3 in favor of the St. Edward Gold team. I couldn't really watch much due to my clock duties on rink 2.

I can see your confusion, the 2 teams broke down close to this.
Gold Team: comprised of 1/2 Varsity, 1/2 JV Team
Green Team: comprised of 1/2 Varsity, 1/2 JV Team
St. Edward was short 1 team for the tournament (due to a last minute cancellation, that was no ones fault), so it was decided to run two split teams, so no brackets needed to be folded.

In perhaps the first ever matchup between the two teams, St. Edward continues to struggle with a 3-2 loss to Walsh Jesuit at Winterhurst on Friday. The Eagles have a month to get things together for the Baron Cup.
Scores posted on Cleveland.com show that the Eagles are getting a much needed shot in the arm this weekend by beating Northview and Mt. Lebanon, they may play Ignatius this afternoon in the championship at Meadville.

I dont believe so. Historically, the top 4 in the red north go against the top 2 in the red east and top 2 in the red west.
What is more alarming is that in years past, the last place team in the Red North is relegated to the Red East/West. Would be a huge embarrassment and blow to the Eagles to be out of the red north next season.

St. Edward will not drop out of Red North. St. Ignatius finished last in 2005-2006 (and 2000-2001 and 1997-1998) and did not drop. University School finished last in 2004-2005. It may be an option given to the team or voted on. I think St. Edward, St. Ignatius, University School, and Padua would have to have several bad years in a row before they consider dropping.
It will take a lot of wins (maybe need to win out?), starting with two wins vs Padua in the coming weeks, to get in the Baron Cup.
If there is one thing cleveland hockey has showed us over the years its that the Baron Cup doesn't matter. How many teams won the Baron Cup and then lost in the state playoffs? I would love to see Ed's in the Cup and lose every year because they play quality competition as a tune up for the state tourney. Hopefully this weekend is the start of a team that will peak at the right time in February.

The relegation is a relatively new feature for the Red North. I believe it went into effect for after the 2005-2006 season. And yes, Ignatius did drop to the Red East for 2006-2007. The team with the best record in the Red East/West has the option to play in the Red North. It is the option of the team with the promotion right to determine if a team goes up or down.
*In 2005-2006 St. Ignatius finished last and for 2006-2007, they had to play in the Red East while Trinity was promoted.
*In 2006-2007 Shaker finished last and in 2007-2008 they had to play in the Red East while St. Ignatius was promoted back.
*In 2007-2008 Trinity finished last. However, it is my understanding that Strongsville chose not to be promoted, so Trinity stayed.
*In 2008-2009 Trinity finished last and Walsh was promoted.
While the Red North is the sexist division, this promotion/relegation occurs for the White and Blue as well. In addition, teams can move from the Blue to the White (and back) and from the White to the Red (and back).
If you dont believe me, take a look for yourself and compare divisions year-to-year:
2005-2006 - http://www.shutout.com/shutout06/standings.asp
2006-2007 - http://www.shutout.com/shutout07/standings.asp
2007-2008 - http://www.shutout.com/shutout08/standings.asp
2008-2009 - http://www.shutout.com/shutout09/standings.asp
2009-2010 - http://www.shutout.com/standings.asp
This is how almost all leagues in Europe work (best example is the English Soccer Pyramid System). From what I understand, many up-and-coming teams (specifically Walsh and Trinity) were complaining that they had no shot to improve their programs and move to the Red North. There was talk of a breakaway league where the Red North teams (the classic five of SE, SI, US, SH, Padua and possibly LC) making their own league. However, this promotion/relegation system was struck as a compromise.
I am not 100% this is still the case, but in recent years there has been movement in and out of the Red North. If things keep up, Eds may be moved out.
EagleFan
01-20-10, 09:50 AM
I did not realize Ignatius spent one year in Red East. I have a hard time believing they would not block a move by the Eagles to Red East, but I guess we shall see. Perhaps the rule is not flexible anymore. Perhaps other Red North fans can weigh in, but I think the philosophy of moving down the last place team has existed for years, but was always a loose rule...
Perhaps the team will make a run and make the question moot...They may need a win over Walsh on 2/4 to avoid the last place finish...
Eagles tie Padua 1-1 after OT. Should be another good game next weekend.

Eds took a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period and lost 3-2.
With the loss, it looks like Eds will miss the Baron Cup for the first time since 1984. (Pre-Whidden days)
Also, a year out of the Red North may be looming, though I do not know if that is a big deal. They can schedule lots ot tough non-conference games and still be prepared for February hockey...
Tough loss yesterday, the Eagles had it won but fell apart in that 3 minute span defensively. 2 goals in 30 seconds never helps the cause but it really hurt a team like us who struggles to score. Not sure if we will make the Baron Cup but it does look like we will be ready for the playoffs. Big win over Padua on Friday and a close loss to Ignatius shows me that this team is playing very good hockey right now when it counts.
