I hope the coach mixes it up today. Id like to see a well balanced attack today on offense with all the weapons. 3 weeks and no competition should knock the cobwebs off. If the line blocks and puts a helmet on each player , Chapman should look like another young D-bo Matthews. And the power running of Younkin, Woods should crack a bottle.

I like their chances... Field if my memory serves me correct had a pretty good team at this level when we played them in SYF 2 years ago but Springfields 7th/8th grade is tough.. I will see you there Polster I'm really interested in how they perform considering i have been riding most of their arses for the last 2 years...

1-0 record with a 14-10 win against field.
I guess the middle school will split in the weeks to come with a 7th, 8th squad. Too many kids as the 7th graders climb from 9 to 18 players. To bad they cant be redirected down to byf.

8th grade:
Defense gave up one big play, about a 35 yard run off tackle for the Waterloo score. Other than that, not sure they gained another yard all day.
Offense scored on 3 big plays and a short pass.
TW broke two long runs of 65 yds for TD's. DC also had a nice 35 yard scamper and TM hooked up with BH on a nice fade route pass in the corner of the end zone. Nice balanced attack this week.
Also should mention ZY had two circus INT's that were very nice.

I know I said I would keep you in check irish but I cant help myself. That game tonight should be considered a loss. And fall on the coaches and their decisions or lack of good ones. You give your self a chance to take the lead and let your defense hold. I dont care if they know who I really am at this time if they want to respond. The phrase "Go big or go home" doesnt apply if your 4th and 5 inside the ten with 2 miutes or so left in the game. You can kick a field goal that can basically win it. It would have had a better chance of converting than the last play call. There I feel better, thanks for letting me vent.

Spartans ran the ball good till the red zone. This is jr high ball and you will get jr high blocking, running, throwing, decision making. Very inconsistent. But the Spartans should have won this tie game. Everyone has the sholda woulda concept, but we aint the coach.
Irish87
09-24-09, 08:20 AM
Just not a good game over all.
Information I found out, was out of the 6 or so passes attempted, 4 of them had WR's run incorrect routes. The time everyone was on the same page, a bad pass was made because he rushed it. The Slant was wide open and the QB knew it. Nobody is taking it harder than the QB. A few QB "checks" were made at the LOS, and maybe shouldn't have, but as you said Polster, this is MS ball and at times you get MS decisions. Sometimes they work(as in the winning pass at the Field game) and sometimes they don't. Key is, these kids learn from their mistakes and become better ball players becasue of them.

8th graders defeated Crestwood last night on a mud coated field. The score was 20 - 8 and they remain undefeated at 3 - 0 - 1. TW had a nice 10 yard scamper off tackle for a TD, then Moe had a QB sneak for a score after a nice 25 yard option run where he was tackled at the one, and later a TD was scored on a slant pass to ZY where some great concentration was shown as the ball was tipped up in the air and gathered in for the score. Good job Spartans.
On the down side, I believe the 7th graders lost to the 2nd and 3rd string Ellet 8th graders last night, 34 - 0. Wasn't there, so I have no update.

8th graders beat Norton last night 9 - 6 to remain undefeated on the season. Norton scored first but missed the xtra point. Then the Spartans came back and scored on a 42 yard pass from Moe to BH. The extra point was good to make it 7 - 6 Spartans. The second have, Norton had a bad snap on a punt deep in their territory and DC and a few other teamates smothered the punter in the endzone for a Safety. Norton still had their chances but turnovers late in the game sealed the victory for your Spartans. The 8th graders raised their record to 4 - 0 - 1. They take on Ravenna at Ravenna next week.
Some nice blocking and tackling was done by Larry. :)
7th graders lost 44 - 0 to a good Coventry team. No details available.

I'm sure coach Sands has them doing that now... who is next for the Spartans MS teams??
just an update for former coaches and friends on Yappi, Ex-Spartan team member ZM has recovered from stress fracture in lower back and has worked his way back into the starting line up at DE and FB for the LBS MS team.. Not many carries at FB yet (just started back on offense last week) but has been productive with 1 TD on 3 carries so far and some devistating lead blocking (i've got some game film Irish/polster i want you to see:eek: can you say pancakes?? lol)... 10-15-09, 08:29 AM
The ref on our side actually told our coach the reason he didnt call the obvious face mask penalties against Ravenna is because he couldn't see them. He then went on to blame our team for them and said, "You keep putting your reciever out here running the same route and he is blocking me". What the ---- then take a step sideways we shouldnt have to change our formation because he is lazy. This is the same guy who was able to see the penalties that cost the TD's at the end of the half. Oh well you get what you pay for and obviously we weren't paying for the refs, Ravenna was.
Irish87
10-15-09, 09:31 AM
Still think there is a shot at the Championship. We are still
undefeated at 4 - 0 - 2, with one game to go. I think everyone else has at least one loss. Not the way I want to win a Conference, but you take what you can take.
And by the way, Moe said he was in on the last play. His hip hit the pylon as he laid out and the ball was clearly across the goal line. If the Ref wasn't still standing at the 25 yard line, maybe he could have seen the play a little better.
MyKids58
10-15-09, 10:24 AM
I think a ref should at least be able to run down the sideline. The guy we had a Copley yesterday could barely run. Not that it would have made a lot of difference, but I thought their guy stepped out of bounds once on a long run. Whatever. They're no Ed Herlihy! Good luck to SMS!

Hey Irish. I think I actually asked people about this at the end of the Coventry game. It didnt make any sense they wouldnt have OT. They have it in BYF and HS. Penalties are penalties, referees are referees.
You have middle school games, you get middle school referees. The game was not decided by any one, two or three plays.
The refs call it like they see it. Sometimes we are, and we aren't happy with what they call. However, nobody can change it unless its simply a misinterpretation of the rule. Both teams played hard, simple as that. It was a tie. In the NFHS rules, no teams are allowed to play out a tie in overtime unless they are going to be playing for "postseason" play. Therefore, 7th, 8th, 9th, and Junior Varsity do not have "any overtime".
By the way, I seen the kid get pushed out of bounds at the last play. He was just simply not in before he touched out of play. He definitely crossed the goal line, but was out of bounds first.
BallRep08
10-15-09, 12:47 PM
Nobody paid any referees, thats just ridiculous. No agreement was made for the Overtime prior to game. No coaches really think about playing overtime, they plan on winning the game. Besides, it was beginning to become very dark.

Just kidding baller. Its all in fun. Agreed, both teams played hard, but I'll tell you, the first TD that was called back because of a block in the back on Ravenna's side, was a horrible call and if you were there, you would have to agree. And I agree, Refs are not always perfect. I think we all understand that. But what we are saying is, there was more than one bad call in that game, and every single one went against the Spartans, but we still managed to almost pull it out. Hats off to the kids. Once they got down early in the game, they kicked it up a notch and battled back time and time again to put them in a position to win.

Ok,
Couple of things here, first-
There are no such thing as "middle school" refs. You have a Class 1 and a Class 2
Class 1 refs- Can ref all high school games - Pee Wee, MS, Frosh, JV and Fridays nights.
Class 2 refs - Can do all the above except Friday night games (Varsity).
Many Friday night refs do MS, Frosh and JV games. It all depends on their regular work schedule and availability.
Secondly,
Here's the entire rule from the OHSAA website:
2009-2010 FOOTBALL
SPORTS REGULATIONS
6. FOOTBALL BOYS
A. GENERAL REGULATIONS
1) Interscholastic Participation
1.5) LENGTH OF PERIODS
1.51) Grades 7 & 8 Maximum length of each quarter is eight minutes.
Halftime intermission is 10 minutes, maximum.
1.52) Grades 9-12
Ninth grade Maximum length of each quarter is 10 minutes.
Maximum length of halftime intermission is 10 minutes.
Sophomore, Junior Varsity, Reserve, Varsity Maximum length of
each quarter is 12 minutes.
(I think most JV games are 10 minutes long, I'll double check this saturday.)
1.53) Overtime procedure. Regular season varsity high school games which are tied at the end of regulation time shall be continued by using the OHSAA 20-yard line overtime procedure. The overtime procedure shall be permitted in non-varsity games when there is mutual agreement, prior to the game, by the opposing coaches to do so. After every third overtime period, there will be an intermission of three minutes.
(non varsity includes, JV, Frosh and MS games)
1.6) NO CONTEST
Any scheduled regular season football game which is not started due to unforeseen circumstances, such as failure of a team to arrive, strikes, school closings, is a No Contest. Games not played are not included in won-loss statistics.
1.7) GRADES 7 & 8 SPECIFIC REGULATIONS
1.71) GAME BALL
The football used in games involving players in the 7th or 8th grade shall be the youth football. Specifications are listed in Rule 1-3-1, National Federation Football Rules.
1.72) MODIFICATION
In games involving only players below ninth grade, teams will not free kick the ball. In place of a free kick, the receiving team will put the ball in play by a snap. The snap shall be made from the yard line 25 yards beyond the kicking teams free kick line that would have been used for the free kick, subject to any carryover penalties. This modification does NOT apply to scrimmage kicks (punts or placement).

From the film you cant see that from our side. I just looked at the ref and didnt see him motion out of bounce. I don't complain much about refs but clearly we were called for two breaking the huddles with 12 and ravenna defenitly did it twice. The face mask that I seen didn't look intentional but the blocking in the back was bull and they called one TD back for a lineman down field on a swing pass. Alright, everyone in the forum just continue to discredit the refs and say "we shoulda won that game" until your faces are blue. What can you do, send the film in? I mean, it's MIDDLE SCHOOL football. Point is you tied. Your qb scored on a busted QB sneak from 25 yards out. Sure you were starting to move the ball in the 4th with 3 minutes left, but apparantly from the final score it was too little too late! I'm sorry but, Goodluck next year.
Suck it up. Make the PAT and win the game outright!
The refs made the calls, whether they are good or bad you can't change it. You can't ammend the records after the season.

that QB also scored on a 30 yard run on the last play of the game. Also, #34 scored previously, 2x's, back to back, with 2 minutes left in the game where both were called back on penalties, one being horrible(see youtube video above) the other call being legit.
