Why is there a charge for 7th graders?

Irish87
03-04-09, 11:27 AM
In the past Springfield Youth Football has competed for Players with the J.H. thus the reason to need players and keep costs low. With the new BYF League and the support of the Athletic Director/H.C at the H.S., all 7th graders will be playing BYF. There is no reason to allow 7th graders to play for free any longer.

Trust me, if we could let all players play for free we would, but reality is, for a non profit organization, we need Register dollars to operate efficiently and safely. If you look around, you will see, Springfield Youth Football is still amoung the cheapest to play football in our area.

In the past its always been free because the jr high is free. I think you guys just opened a can of worms that cant be closed if this continues. You know as well as i do we cant keep kids in 7th to stay down at byf. No matter what KV stresses to the parents or the players. That was one of the main selling points for Kevin to consider. I think you guys should run it by KV before you really try to inforce it.

Your wrong about why it was free. Sorry to burst your bubble. In fact it was pay to play just a few years ago, if they could have gotten enough players.
We've already discussed the plan with KV.
Polster, with all due respect, you need to let us run the Program. I appreciate your comments, but really, its $60.

Few years? OK your 60 dollars will guarantee you wont have a A squad next year. The plan you discussed with KV must of been a dream because I know for a fact he did not agree with that.

The plan was discussed with and agreed upon by KV, that all 7th Graders will be strongly encouraged to play BYF. He also gave us his full support in going forward this way.
I don't know why I even bother with you Polster. You're gonna disagree just because you enjoy being argumentative. I suppose your next suggestion is to allow all Lakemore kids to play for free again as well, with the intent that Lakemore will cover these Registrations with a Grant. :wallbang: That plan worked out real good for us didn't it? Do you have any idea how much money it takes to run a Youth Football Organization? Why not let all the kids to play for free and maybe the Township and Village will cover these funds? :Ohno:

This years 7th grade team will be down on numbers, no matter if we charge or we don't charge. I believe there were only 3 or 4 6th graders playing football last year, so we have our hands full with recruiting. We don't need your negativity. $60 is nothing an we are even willing to work out payment plans, whether it be 5, 10 or 15 bucks a week/month. I don't see $60 being the downfall of our 7th grade team.

I guess not, and furthermore I mearly stated if you charge a fee you will make it harder for KV to keep the kids from moving up to the jr high. He cannot make these kids play BYF, so we put the stipulation in kids in JR high dont pay. It is true I love to argue but jeesh.

Its 60 freakin dollars!! I mean really. Its not like were charging $125 bucks or anything. And as I've stated before, we have worked with people on an individual basis for payment before, and would do it this year as well.
And no Ed did not tell me you dropped off money. We would gladly work with the Villiage again this year, if they front the money before the season.

let me comment here.. as 7th grade coach i am not happy about the $60 to play, but as a board member i understand how badly we could have used the funds (from last years 7th graders who did play for free) to accomplish the list of upgrades that we have been given to do to the facilities by the schools to bring them up to code per the buisness manager... or the new building projects we have been planning to make our field one of the top notch youth fields in the league... i see both sides of it. i would find it unacceptable if even one child does not play due to money and at the assemblies we will make it clear that if help is waranted it will be given.. payments can and will be set up, but until we can see some money upfront from the football boosters for grades 7-12 we can no longer, after last years Village issues run the organization on promises and IOU's.. if things pan out as expected with the boosters this will be the first and last year they would have to pay $60 to play 7th grade football.. if the school was to run a 7th grade team it would cost them some serious extra $$$$ and probably would not be approved by the school board.... we are here to help each other not battle as in the past....

I think Tallmadge was $125 last year, but we do have raffle tickets you can sell for $5 a pop. Sell enough tickets and your football is free.

Polster, do we need to make arrangements to have this money delivered to SYF? Am I correct to assume this is money from the Village?
Send me a PM if you have more information for us.

Why do you guys keep bringing up the village issues. Not one thing asked of the byf members was done correctly or paperwork filled out. Only when Money was getting tight is when everyone was asking were the money was at from Lakemore. Not one piece of paper work was filled out for the grant money. Ed and you guys knew to get the appropriate forms from the mayors wife so the parents can get them filled out to receive monies. But heres the kicker, the mayor dropped off money out of his own pocket to me to give to you guys.

Just think you guys wanted to waste another 20 thousand on a trip to Tennessee, all the while we needed field repairs. That goes for the year before also. Need to know your priorities.

Once again your wrong Polster. If we had gone to Tennessee last year, all money would have been fronted by the Players and Parents. The only thing the League was going to assist with was the entrance fee which was only a $150 or so. Maybe if you had payed attention at some of the parents Meetings we had, you would have know this. Get your facts straight.

If there was paperwork that needed filled out, our Director would have known about it and taken care of it.

Ed did know, he may of forgotten with the stress he and only he had to overcome. I commend Ed for keeping it strong while he had to get served over and over again by those idiots from the jack shack. I have a strong feeling something is going on fishy behind Eds back and the side I will be with is Eds. I hope he doesnt get stabbed in the back for the struggle him and his family was put through. God bless

Nobody said he didn't know. My comment was, if Ed knew about it, I have to believe he took care of it because this "paperwork" never came up in any Meetings that I'm aware of. As for myself I had no idea there was paperwork that needed completed by us, nor did any of the other Board Members. We had numerous contacts with the Mayors Council and not one time was there mention of filling out paperwork. Just so you know. Maybe Ed knows something different.

Not sure there are any sides to chose, but congratulations on your choice.

Good for K through 6. Doesn't look good for 7th graders. Only had 8 sign up. We'll hold out for late sign ups as long as we can, but doubt the Youth will carry an "A" Team. I've spoken with the Athletic Director and he has agreed to allow the 7th graders that did come out, to play at the M.S.

Numbers without 7th graders is approaching 110 kids. At this point, we will carry 2 Flag teams, 1 D Team, 1 C team and 1 B team.

Really disappointing Irish. You guys had a nice A team with a JV A team last year and only 8 kids this year? Don't give up get out and recruit would hate for you not to have an A team. Get the dads out there recruiting!

I'm with ya. Fall baseball has really hurt this class of kids, as far as Football goes. There is a very talented group of baseball players in this 7th grade and they have been playing spring and fall baseball together now, for 3 years. If we could somehow get this group of kids, we would see more follow.

We've done a ton to communicate to the kids of the community about sign ups. Mass e-mails went out 2x's a month, we held Assemblies in the Schools in front of the kids, we've published in the Suburbanite 2x's, we've had Sign up information on the local cable channel for 6 months, we posted signs last weekend at major intersections(even though two of them were stolen) and we put out a Public Broadcast to every kids home that attends Springfields elementary schools. Seems like the other 110 parents got the information ok.

We realize we will have some late ones, but in order to field one A Team, we will need at least 10 more kids to compete(give or take a few). We'll keep trying.

And thank you for the compliment on last years team. Its a good group of kids who we all feel have good potential in the near future.

80 7th grade boys and only 8 play football???? :wallbang: :wallbang: :wallbang: :wallbang: where is the community support?? we are trying to build for the future not give up on it.... if anyone reading this knows any 7th graders from Springfield not playing football please encourage them to, they only get to play this game while they are young we have a good experianced coaching staff ready to work with these kids... things are on the up turn here lets not let it falter with poor numbers every other grade.

any word on what's going on with the SYFL as a whole? Just wondering, I haven't heard anything, been too busy with the GBYF transition. Any new teams over there? any others on the chopping block? I figured one of you Springfield boys would have the scoop.

BTW, Spartan71 I need D McM's number, I have changed phones and lost it, can you hook me up? PM me.

Haven't heard much from the other League. Just heard recently, there are a few more Teams lookng into the posibility of a change. I'll leave it at that, for the time being because we've heard this before, and nothing happened. We'll wait and see.
