Do you support the current format where each district gets a certain number of swimmers that 'automatically' qualify to state from each district, or do you believe that the top 24 swimmers should go to State no matter what district they're from?

Who are we mourning today? Gores in the 500, because two guys from Hudson got in at 4:54+? Or is it worse that Buchanan at 1:44.70 is the first at large non-qualifier while two northeast automatics at 1:45+ compete at state?

I think the 3 guys over 2:00 in the IM is worse. Weither or not you want automatics or not you have to agree they atleast need to redistribute who gets them. Giving the northeast, which is easily the slowest disrict, five automatics is rediculous.
The worst is the 400 free relays. The top northeast time is 3:13.99. The top four southwest times beat this relay, and the northeast gets an additional four automatics that are even slower.

My take on it is that its necessary, but maybe not to the extent that it is today. Face it, you swim faster if you are racing fast people, so a fast swimmer in a slow district is at a disadvantage.
I think each district should get two.

To me it's not a who, it's a what. The who changes every year but the what stays the same. The State meet is supposed to represent the best swimmers in the state, but due to so many automatics that doesn't happen. If the OHSAA is worried about representation from each district, fine. Give one automatic qualifier from each district to garauntee that each district is represented, but other than that let the best swimmers represent the state.

I agree with that. Each district should get one and then the next 20 fastest times should go to the meet. The 200 IM and 500 Free a lot of swimmers got screwed from our district because of some slow times.
The sad thing is they might never change.

Guys, It is called the State Championships. You have you have to swim fast and earn your spot there. Automatics don't make sense to me because they are keeping the people that earned the spots out of the meet.
I agree with the automatics, though it should definately be readjusted. Don't give more than two to each District. I mean the Southwest and Central don't even need the automatics really.
It doesn't really matter if it puts slower swimmers in the state meet because that just the way it is. Nothing will change it, at least in the near future. Teams just have to accept it, and plan their strategy accordinginly.

agreed. the plan laid out by the ohsaa is agreed upon by the coaches and such. it is better for the sport and the state if there is representation from all over the state. yes, SW is the fastest district in the state, but a STATE meet is not a STATE meet without representation from all over Ohio. there is a reason why it is called the STATE championships and not the SW DISTRICT STATE MEET.

Well you can still get full representation from the state without auotmatics. Usually there is always a few guys from each district in each event that can make it. My only problem is giving the slowest district the most automatics.

Yeah, the automatics should be based on a combination of speed and size, not size of district alone. That would be a better representation of the state anyway.

Automatic Qualifiers are a joke. It cheats the South District out of multiple bids every year, mainly St X kids. I say the best of the best goes no matter what district you're from
