That's a pretty good result for a Columbus team. Coffman even beat Padua, which is almost astounding.

The Shamrocks lost to University School and Walsh Jesuit, but overall, if you're the Coffman coach, you have to be pretty pleased with the results going up against that group of teams.

I hope to see a St. Edward-University School matchup in the state semi-finals, Saturday March 14 at noon.

I think US is the clear favorite in the Kent District, but St. Edward and St. Ignatius will fight it out in the Brooklyn District. Eds and Iggy hit the ice Friday night @ Winterhurst.

St. Edward routs  St. Ignatius 11-1 last night. St. Edward has not lost to an Ohio school since 12/13 (Ignatius). Their only other loss to an Ohio school was 12/5 to University School, who they play this afternoon out east. Could that be a preview of the Baron Cup final and state semi-final? We may see if US is the clear favorite starting today.

Overall, St. Edward is 21-4-5, unbeaten in their last 17 games (5 ties)

I think both St. Eds and St. Iggy fans are both in a state of shock with the Eagles dominating, mercy rule, win over the Iggy...11-1. It will be interesting to see how the Eagles play against University school today. The Eagles 4th game this week.

Anyone else attend the Padua game last night? I've never seen so many penalties in one game (by two teams). Very disappointed in the level of play the first two periods when it was obvious that St. Edward had a serious physical and skill advantage over Padua.

Baron Cup I Bracket is out.

1. University School
8. North Olmsted

4. St. Ignatius
5. Walsh Jesuit

2. St. Edward
7. Strongsville

3. Lake Catholic
6. Hudson

I like the draw, it should give St. Edward a spot in the title game vs the Ignatius/US winner.

That's true, while it's good for the sport in Ohio to have huge upsets like the past 2 years (Strongsville over Ed's in '07 and Mentor over US last year) I hope the Eagles learned their lesson. Hopefully it's Iggy's turn this year.

Implied in your remarks is that the Eagles screwed up. Based on Strongsville's season so far (wins over LC and US, for instance), don't they possibly deserve some credit? Didn't see the game...lopsided shots on goal advantage for the Eagles?

In any event, very strange hockey season and it appears the Mustangs belong in the North.

I would agree, Strongsville built iceland usa a few years ago and hockey has been growing there ever since. They should be a program to contend with in the coming years.

The Eagles did screw up, they didn't play three periods of hard hockey and therefore let the Mustangs keep the game close. The lesson they should have learned a couple years ago is to take Strongsville serious every time the Mustangs step out on the ice, they have a good program.

You have to figure Ignatius should be the favorite tonight versus Strongsville, but a Strongsville win would not be huge surprise considering they have knocked the Wildcats (2006) and Eagles (2007) out of the playoffs in the last few years. Ignatius won 4-2 back in December. Strongsville is 13-1 in their last 14 games.

Yes it was! Luckily we ate beforehand because the concession stand closed up in the 3rd period. They left a lot of money out by closing up 2 hours early!

Great win by the Eagles, getting the goal 13 seconds into the 6th OT period. 9 periods were plenty for me. I'm too old to be up this late!

What a game! It looked like Ed's was really taking to the Cats up until the goalie was knocked down. After that it was Ignatius outplaying us until the last few minutes of the 3rd. As the overtimes wore on you could tell Ignatius couldn't match the Eagle intensity, the only thing that worried me was their goalie played on his head, had a few saves I can't believe he made. The puck was in their zone probably around 80% of the time during the overtimes, I really thought they would catch us with a breakaway and bury the puck in the net to win. Hats off to our guys for keeping the pressure on and hats off to both teams for adding a new chapter in the great rivalry, they will be talking about this one for years to come. The best thing about the whole game was watching the players mutual respect for each other after it was over.

10PM or so. OT periods are 8 minutes, with 15 minute breaks after the 1st, 3rd, and 5th OT's.

the refs did a good job just letting them play in OT. 0 power plays in OT periods.

Other than closing the concession stand way too early, the rink did a fine job. Parking was a little tight; only a couple of cars illegally parked got ticketed and towed away. I didn't see evidence of any poor sportsmanship or fights break out.

The kids played a whale of a game and were all totally exhausted towards the end.

Were there places to sit and etc?

Yes, seating didn't seem to be a problem. OHSAA didn't want folks standing along the glass blocking spectators' views during the playoffs, but toward the end of the overtime periods, lots of folks were standing along the walls on either end of the rink. I think they were planning to leave, but just couldn't do it untill the game was finally over. Never been to a 4-hour hockey game before. Don't think I want to see another one, either.

Eagles had a good year and would have been in the finals if the draw had been different. From what I understand the Eagles have been in the final four 18 times advancing to the title game 14 times. I am wondering how many of those semi-final losses could have actually been the best two teams playing on Saturday. I would say this was one of those years the best two teams in the final four played on Saturday.

It happens more now since the OHSAA took a bid from Toledo and gave it to Columbus/Dayton/Cincinnati. The fact is that those teams haven't been competitive. Back in the day, when Northwest Ohio usually sent two teams to the state semifinals, those teams were almost always right on par with the Northeast Ohio representatives (sometimes even better). Since I think the draw has almost always been random, I'm sure there were other occurrences of the best two teams facing off in the semifinals. However, it was never as blatantly obvious as it's been since the Columbus district was given a berth in the semis. Now it's gotten to the point that the team that plays the Columbus district winner in the semis pretty much has a bye into the finals.
