A 10 year deal is being finalized to keep the State Championships in Canton until at least 2019.

It was approved today. They also picked up the 2 year option on the football finals.

...and this made the news? canton seems to have the ohsaa wrapped around their finger.

in all honesty, there was some speculation about the meet being moved to OSU's new pool, but since they plan on hosting NCAAs every few years the schedules would collide.

Also, OSU's facilities aren't even close to support the number of swimmers on deck and fans in the stand.

I disagree. With the meet now split into D1 & D2 sessions there is enough spectator space and the deck space at OSU is significantly more than in Canton. Nonetheless, OHSAA has made their decision so we will not find out how well OSU could host for at least 10 years.

I agree with thedutchman. Now that boys are split up into D1 and D2, their will be enough space at OSU.

the state meet should be moved. the ohsaa is too involved in canton's economy that they fail to recognize that northern teams benefit far more from the location than do teams in cincy. the meet should be held in a central location, such as osu

How do Northern teams benefit more than the southern schools?

the travel is less taxing and less of an issue for northern teams than for teams in southern ohio. granted, i realize that the location of the state meet is always beneficial to some. a central location in the state's capitol would be best, not to mention osu's facilities are much nicer and i believe have the capacity for seating. yes, i know that this benefits teams in the central district, such as defending champion st. charles. columbus is a far nicer town and osu is a far nicer venue than the venues that canton has to offer.

Hasn't seemed to hurt St. X over the last "umpteen" years.

ok, so out of all the teams represented from cincinnati and other areas of ohio, only a handful of teams, such as st x and a few girls schools travel well. a majority of the people represented from the state meet are northerners.

I don't know what tell you. The Championships are here and are staying for at least the next 10 years. If you don't like it, protest by not coming up. I wish they would make the same bold move and sign a 10 year deal to keep the football championships up here. Oh well, I guess Stark County will have to keep settling for 3 year contracts with two 1 year renewables  .

Actually, on the boys side the Southwest District generally has the most swimmers at the state meet. Now if you consider all the other districts "northerners" then you are correct that a majority of the people are from the north, but that would be the same if the meet were in Cincinnati.

i agree. i think it would be best for the ohsaa to have a "revolving" location for the state meet. perhaps, one year in canton, cleveland, columbus, cincinnati. the ohsaa should be able to find pools with adequate space throughout the state, at least just a couple. canton should not just have a monopoly on the state meet.

Only problem is not many places have the seating capacity of CT Brannin Natatorium. I'm sure most of the swimmers don't mind the location either.

In 10 years that option can be explored.
