Just wondering if anyone has any ideas/thoughts/predictions on who will be the top 5 swimmers at state this year in each event. List in the order who you think will win to fifth place.

The 200 free may be the most difficult to get an at-large qualifying time, especially risky if you try to save your taper for state. Any reason why thedutchman has Schuttinger switching from the 200 free to the 100 free? As of today, it looks like it should be much easier to qualify in the 100 than 200, with only five returning state qualifiers in the 100 free. Willets, Lawley or even Vigar could swim the 100 if they wanted, especially if they expect to swim in the 200 free relay immediately following the 500. If you include Aaron Buchanon who swam 4:37 as a sophomore, that makes six guys already with a time under 4:40. Will Andrew Abeysinghe of Beavercreek swim high school this year? Two years ago as a sophomore, he swam 4:45 in the 500 and finished 7th in the backstroke at 51.76. That backstroke time is faster than all the returning swimmers from last season.

I moved Schuttinger to 100 because he led off St. Charles' 400 Free Relay with a 47 mid. St. Charles has Sam Kocher who is only .2 behind Schuttinger in the 200. Although now that they will swim the meet all in one day, the fly/100 combo isn't quite as attractive. I forgot about Abeysinghe, who will be swimming this year for Beavercreek. Probably need to move him into first spot on the back. Neither Schwartz nor Lapari matched their district times for St. X last year so I moved them down on my list. I just overlooked Hart in the fly, but Svagerko is D2.
Anyway, the list is based on last year and many if not all these guys and others will go faster. Especially the younger ones.

My bad, I thought Svagerko was from Toledo St Francis rather than Columbus StF.
Those that had peak times at district rather than state probably tapered for district: Lipari, Schwartz, Perkins, (and many others). Will they be able to qualify this year while saving their taper for state? It will probably be easier for Schuttinger, Mai and Kelch to get an automatic berth from the Central district without using their taper. In the SW, it could take sub 4:40 in the 500 for an automatic, while in the NE 5:00 would send you to state. Kelch, Schuttinger and Kocher could take the three autos in the 200 at 1:45/6. If Schuttinger moves to the 100, that almost gives Kocher a free pass. In the SW district, there are probably 14 guys that could go 1:45 with taper, so most are almost required to taper for SW district in order to qualify for state via the at-large berth.

You moved lipari and schartz out for adding time at state, but you failed to recognize how of the 16 finalists at state in the 200 IM Mai had the slowest time and barely broke 2 mins. And how do you over look Hart he is the number 2 returning flyer, maybe you should just use facts and times rather than what you think is right

what about top 5 for d-2. I think they will be quicker then some imagine. There are a great swimmers that go to d-2 schools. Think of Austin Gregory, Sam Mitchell, Max Mantkowski, and Mack Rice. Many people like them will make it more competitive.

do you really think that St. X's Schoenling will make top 5 in the 50 free? Coming into the year, he is 7th in the SW District...
I know St. X has a great sprint program. (Kyle Gallagher's improvement last season) but even he didn't get top 10 (11th) as a 6'3" kid. (brett being maybe 6'.)

Not bad, but you have some D2 swimmers on the list (Barrett, Svagerko, Chapman , McHugh, and University) and I think its a mistake to leave out St. Charles on the relays.

your list seems pretty legit, but i'm just gonna go over a few points were i disagree (many will be in Xs favor b/c im kind of biased  , and there are only a few people i know how they did this summer
First off in the 200 free i think columbus will beat krone based on krone's 1:57 compared to Matt's 1:55 this summer i just feel like matt is improving much faster than krone
200 IM im not sure if andrew will swim it but other than that it looks good
50 free looks good to me
100 fly i actually think hart will win this again b/c he is improving alot more this summer
100 free- I think Will Lawley will swim this for X and could be in the mix with Krone and Barret, but Huffman is the definite favorite
500 free- At sectionals Matt Columbus beat Vigar by 7 seconds in the 400 free so that should be a good race, and i have no idea what kelch did
100 back- my only change is that Andrew Abeysinghe is the clear favorite so just move everyone back one
100 breast- I dont really know whose gonna win that one
As for the relays
200 free- You forgot oakhills, which was 3rd last year and returns all of its team, they're the favorite to me
200 Medley- This is actually the one relay i think x has the least shot at winning, just b/c they lack a backstroker and flyer
400 Free- This I don't see how x loses to Moeller. Seeing what X has in store i think this is the only relay that x improves on from last year
stxbomber999

they'll still beat centerville, when i said i don't think they'll win i was talking about St. Charles.

how do you see the St. X's 400 free relay getting better? just curious because losing Jimmy (45.26 at state) was a lot bigger than Moeller's loss (Brian Howell). Plus X also lost Ransenberg (46.56 at state).

Yes losing Jimmy and Ransenberg was big, but it isn't crucial the St. X has both of them. Lawley is capable of being a 45 high or a 46 low and Columbus is capable of being a 46 low as well. Also there are plenty of other unknowns on the St. X team who are capable of stepping up and going fast. I agree that the 400 free relay is maybe the only relay St. X can improve in from last year.

Just remember after the 2007 season X lost 3 of the 4 swimmers from its 400 free relay, including Dave Mosko, but they were still able to drop time in 2008 in what was really a lack luster performance from really all 4 members of X team.

The fact that SC already had the meet won may have affected their performance. If the meet had been on the line I bet that relay would have been faster.

Agreed and with SC's slow starts they could have been faster as well. I think that if the meet was on the line both teams could have been 3:05 or better

Some things about your predictions seem a little far out there. For Example:
200 Free- Having the St. X kids go 1st 2nd and 3rd seems a little too much. Roman Willets getting 5th and Michael Krone getting 4th. One of them will take out one of the X guys from 1st-3rd. One of them will probably get third.
200 IM - Looks good, but maybe move Sam Lipari up a spot or two. Over all this is pretty accurate.
50 free looks good too, but maybe move Kevin Koenig up and Logan War down a lot. David Sanders might need to be moved up.
100 fly- Having Roman Willets last is a pretty big stretch. And Travis Schieman 3rd is too. Willets came into the state meet with the second fastest non senior time. Last is way to far.
100 free- Michael Krone needs to be moved up. He might even be a contender for the state tittle.
500- Aaron Buchanan is not going to get 7th.He had a bad swim last year and will definitely swim a lot faster. He will easily get top 3. Matt Columbus will probably get 1st.
100 back looks good maybe Frankie Dyer 2nd?
100 breast to me is the most messed up. Putting Travis Schieman 1st is a little ridiculous. Him beating Joe Albers or Erik Mai is very very doubtful. These two will be on a whole other level. They will probably race for 1st and beat everyone else by over a second. Then having him beat Sam Lipari and Evan Schwartz is going to be tough. I believe it will be a fight for 3rd. At best Schieman would get 3rd but doubtful. His time might be faster than Sam and Evans but they have plenty of room to improve.

ill go ahead and put in my two cents on this list aswell
Diving- I dont really know much about, so ok by me
Medley Relay- No way Centerville wins this, St. C and St. X should beat them in this, if not definately St. C
200 Free- Love the St. X 1,2,3 and i think it will happen if they all swim it
200 IM- You're the second person who has put Abeysinghe in it, is he going to swim this? otherwise looks good
50 Free-Brian Barret should be on that list
100 Fly- You dont give schuttinger enough credit, it will be a duel between him and Hart for first
100 free- A couple of things here. You're missing Brian Barret, and (i know you cant really include him yet) i think Will Lawley will swim this for X. Also you have Hart and Schuttinger in this, and because of the new state format, i dont know how well they'll do. Finally, you Mike Hart and Mike Krone listed as Mason swimmers, i'm sure it was just a typo.
500 Free- First take Lawley cause ithink he wont swim it. Over the summer Matt Columbus beat Zach Kelch. Also Alex Miller beat about half that list at sectionals this summer. Why is ty perkins first? his best time was a 4:38 last year
200 free relay- you're not giving X enough credit. With Lawley, Schoenling, Columbus, and who ever their 4th is they will be much better than 6th
100 back-looks pretty good
100 breast-Why is Schieman 1st if Mai and Albers are both faster than he has ever been, why is Litinov ahead of Schwartz when litinov's best time is 1:00 and Schwartz is a 59
400 free relay- looks good

That is an odd mixture of DI and DII teams. You have Perkins, COSF listed, but you left out University. I'm going to assume you intended this to be a DI list. If that is the case, all these DII entries should be removed:
2.) Jeff Craig (Field)
5.) Josh Campbell (Madison Comprehen)
6.) James Engelhart (Charagin Falls)
8.) Columbus Academy
6.) Jimmy Chapman (Perkins)
7.) Carl Svagerko (COSF)
7.) Perkins
4.) Jimmy Chapman (Perkins)
7.) Kevin Lancki (Valley Forge)
And it appears St Francis gets an A and a B team in the 400 relay.
Medley Relay- No way Centerville wins this,
100 Fly- You dont give schuttinger enough credit, it will be a duel between him and Hart for first
500 Free- Why is ty perkins first? his best time was a 4:38 last year
100 breast-Why is Schieman 1st if Mai and Albers are both faster than he has ever been, why is Litinov ahead of Schwartz when litinov's best time is 1:00 and Schwartz is a 59
Notice any sort of pattern, giving swimmers from a particular Dayton school the edge?
In addition to Lawley in the 100 free, there is a good chance Willets could swim the 100 free rather than the fly. His summer time in the 100 free LCM at junior nationals was 53.07. That is just a heartbeat from Huffman and a full second or more faster than everyone else in the 100 free LCM this summer.

Please, times at this time in the season mean nothing. Most of the senior class hasnt been in town enough to train to be going that fast. That is, if they have been recruited this fall. Look at times again in december/january and you'll be able to say who is good at what. It is pointless to compare swims at this point in time.

Also, Columbus comes out of the summer season with the fastest 400 free time, and I wouldnt leave Alex Miller far out of the mix. He has been swimming like a champ since state last year, and will be the underdog this year.

200 medley- word from columbus says that they will not swim schuttinger on the 200medley
It does not appear that anything is set in stone in Columbus. The following is from St. Charles website:
"200 Medley Relay – Despite the graduation of Kyle Jennings, Alex Schaffer and Neil O’Kelly from our state runner-up relay last season, we return one of the fastest Ohio breaststrokers in Erik Mai. In addition, we have several talented Cards who have been waiting for their chance to compete on a relay. The backstroke leg will primarily be covered by Jay Schuh, Sandy Whitaker, and Orion Swanson. Mai, Eric Grunden, Justin Shotwell, Corey Taylor and David Yarnell will handle the breaststroke leg. In the ‘fly, we’ll look to Nick Schuttinger, Mai, Taylor, Matt Brown, and Chad Rankin. In the anchor role, we’ll have our choice of Whitaker, Sam Kocher, Shotwell, Ira McCrystal and Mark Stechschulte."
The site has an preview of the season. It can be found at http://www.eteamz.com/scswim/index.cfm?

Any St. X swimmer would put Schuttinger down as one of their favorites, especially when he came from behind to out touch their two top dog seniors.
What about St. Charles medley of Schuh - Mai - Whitaker - Kocher

no any one who knows anything about swimming would out him down as a favorite, he got 4th last year and 1-3 graduated. Even if he got 6th behind x's two guys he would be a favorite

Relays...just too much speculation prior to the state meet. Some of the relays won't be decided until after the district meets when the coaches try to optimize points and matchups. What two relays will guys like Lawley, Schuttinger, Dyer, Huffman, Willets, Kelch, Mai, Krone, etc. swim in order to have a shot at being relay state champion or at scoring the most team points? Much of that depends on how much the rest of their teammates improve during the season.

Going on recriuting trips should have no effect on how a swimmer is swimming because colleges give swimmers time to practice and the swimmers practice during the week with their team. So if seniors are going best times its legit.

Gammell and Litvinov have already gone best times in their 100 back and 100 breast...
while in the 100 fly glaser-garbrick has already gone a 51 this year which is a best time and schieman a 52.12
ty perkins has already gone a 22 flat start this year
Rumor has it that the Centerville coach got arrested for distributing steroids to his swimmers, which explains all these early season best times.

But somebody already posted. Using the previous poster's logic, Mike Hart could win the 500 free at state:
1 Hart, Mike H 17 Mason-OH 4:48.60
2 Koch, Stephen D 17 Mason-OH 4:48.62

It is nice to go fast in the beginning of the season, but it really is not a valid show of what you will go at the end of the season. People won't win state in november, they will win it in february.

what about top 5 for d-2. I think they will be quicker then some imagine. There are a great swimmers that go to d-2 schools. Think of Austin Gregory, Sam Mitchell, Max Mantkowski, and Mack Rice. Many people like them will make it more competitive.
Michael Murphey from Wyoming, and Brad Hines from Taylor are going to be the top two 100 flyers, Murphey will also be up there in 100 free, and Hines will be up there in 100 back.

Discussion of his academic situation aside, Nick Schuttinger is back with the team. He beat Eric Huffman in the 50 free style in the SC vs. UA dual-meet over the weekend.
Huffman didn't swim his best (I'm assuming from the times), but it is still an impressive swim for Schuttinger considering he went a lifetime best in the event mid-season right after tough winter training.

It will have to come down to Hart v. Schuttinger. remember Schuttinger did go faster at State than hart.
Will Lawley, 3rd last season.
Matt Columbus 7th last season.
Alex Miller 1:43.5 at the first meet of the year (this was only .7 off of making finals at state, and he wasn't rested/shaved/tapored)
They have the #3,4,5 times in the state, behind 1 kid in D2, and Roman Willets... Roman (if he swims it) has to be the favorite. But to say they won't make 3 to finals if ridiculous

Yeah you really cant base what going to happen at the end of the year off of classic, it can help make educated guesses, but not completely accurate predictions. It doesnt include other swimmers from around the state (ie Schuttinger may still beat Hart and win the fly) and with the added events, such as the 200s, some swimmers dont swim their best highschool events (ie X only had 1 of their 3 200 guys who are currently 1,2,3 in the district), also allowing people to swim on all relays doesnt necessarily give an accurate pridiction of those (Moe should be the favorite in 2 of 3, but Im not sure if they can win all 3 at districts)
Also my comment about Xs 1,2,3 in the 200 free was based off of X having Frankie Dyer who was a 1:41 last year which would have given X the 1st, 2nd, and 4th best returning times from state last year, with Krone being 3rd ahead of Columbus, but since krone went a 1:57 this summer and Columbus a 1:55, it really didnt seem like an impossibility. You see there is really no point in critisizing a prediction from over 4 months ago, thing change and there is no way ti predict the future

I think Moeller has very good shot at winning all three relays at classic and at state. They put up a 1:38 without fast suits at GCL and they wouldnt even have to weaken any of their other relays now because a kid went a 21.4 in free. Their only down fall would be their freshman flyer. But they have albers and koenig to make up for it. X has a good relay too. With columbus schwartz lipari and schoeling it should be a good match up. Both relays are not a stacked relay but are very fast. I wouldnt underestimate either of them, mainly moeller.

Especially since Koenig is finally dropping time in his 50 back. (at classic he was 25.95 with a leg suit. and went 25.6 without one)
State champion will be a toss up. X, Centerville, Moeller, and you can't forget about St. Charles up north too.

oakhills beat centerville at the classic. and beavercreek beat them at their conference. better move centerville medley down to at least 8. sycamore and loveland are close behind. centerville will have to fight to make it to top 8 at state.

actually centerville went a 1:39.3 on the first day of there conference meet with a 26.5 from backstroke....this beats beavercreek best and best oak hills, and sycamore and loveland havent gone close to this so give them a little more respect than that, just from a bad conference final race and a classic final race which for some reason they didnt seem to gave there best season lineup...idk

Well most likely SW District because if you notice its only SW swimmers...
No Huffman No Willets etc.

It looks like all the obvious choices for event winners are listed. McKee in the backstroke should be mentioned. All of these guys are probably tapering for state, so might not have their ultimate best time at district.
Is there anyone that is tapering for District to make sure they qualify for state in a second event? Who might have a surprise showing with a District taper? The only one I can think of is Kanzari. If he tapers for District, he could come up with a 4:3x 500. Will anyone go under 4:35 at district?

well the meet is still fast and i am sure those swimmers will go anywhere from 50-90% taper for district...i could see all the names listed go under 4:35 in the 500

I think you could have a lot of sub-4:35 guys. Alex Miller already went a 4:36 to win the SW Classic and Ty Perkins has gone a 4:37 in season. Also, Matt Columbus, John Vigar and Ty Perkins were all under 4:40 last year at Districts. I don't think it's a question of IF anyone will, it's a question of how many. I would guess there could be upwards of 5 guys under 4:35.

Isn't it fun trying to predict tapers? Vigar and Buchanon did not make the podium in neither of their events. Both were over 4:40. Kanzari did indeed hit 4:3x. Perkins, Columbus and Miller were the only three to go under 4:35, but they were also the only ones coming in with seed times close to that.
1-2-3 in heat 4 was a nice battle to watch. 1-2-3 in heat 3 was just as interesting (Kleinhenz-Rice-McNamara), with two guys finishing under 4:40 and reaching the podium.

Buchanon's time especially surprises me, I thought he would have been right up there. And if I could have redone a prediction after the 200 free I would have said maybe 4. You never know how someone will do, but it's still fun to guess and hope you're right, haha.

Here are the top 5 swimmers at the SW district meet by points:
40 Albers
36 Sanders
36 Miller
33 Perkins
32 Schnur (tie)
There were a couple swimmers tied at 32 points. As a tiebreaker, I looked at their relay splits. Schnur had the fastest 50 fly split at the meet (for example, compared to Columbus who also had 32 points, but was fourth in the fly split), and the second fastest 50 split in the 200 free relay. Sanders was the only swimmer to have the two fastest relay splits at the meet.
