Summit beat Fenwick 1-0. Don't take them lightly at home on their field!!! They are MUCH better than they were last year. Their field is really narrow and they pack it in.

SCD_Fan (I am still trying to figure out who you are ....) I have to agree with you. They did play us very tough. Andy Vollmar has then playing inspired and his players worked hard for him tonight. They play in the GCL, so they will take their lumps. But in D3, they will compete.

I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that they handled Turpin in their last scrimmage. Not looking too much into the result because it was a scrimmage, but it does speak volumes for their improvement.

As an FYI DC played Fenwick on August 14th. The score was DC 0 Fenwick 1. Very tight game. DC dominated the first half. Second half was more balanced. DC outshot Fenwick but just couldn't put it on frame.

Normally, when someone hears this it means they quit and then return to the same position at the original job. Going by the Cincy State website, it looks as though Combs went back but is now the Fitness Center Director (as opposed to the Mens' Soccer Coach). I wonder if this is almost like an Associate AD position?? Still, Loveland was really looking forward to him leading their team but now appear to be in good hands with Dr. Quinn..

Alter 2
DC 1

1-1 at the half, Alter scored in the first 30 seconds of the 2nd. DC pressured Alter in the last 20 minutes and scored a goal in the last minute that was called back (questionable offsides call). Alter was very fortunate tonight. They are going to have some problems in the GCL without a solid keeper. Good game. DC probably deserved the tie.

Bad game for SHS. Princeton is a team that SHS coulda, if not shoulda beaten. SHS was off their game and Princeton took advantage.

I am not familiar with SHS players but for a DIII school to beat a mid level or better large school soccer program (like you find in the GMC) is a pretty ambitious take. Many of these larger schools will put 11 on the field with higher level club experience with at least a couple of players who have upper level Buckeye or MRL experience. I suspect there was probably a reason why SHS was off their game and it had a lot to do with who they were playing. But then again, I did not see the game so that is speculation on my behalf.

I'm not saying it can't be done, especially with me not knowing much about SHS other than they are good, but if I were a betting man . . .

Gotta agree with Thunderflames..... D3 may be able to beat a GMC team but I wouldn't count on it. To much horsepower and too strong of a bench for D3 to hang for 80 minutes with GMC.

cincysoccercoach

Thunderflames you are way off. SHS has more premier level players than Princeton hands down. SHS is fielding several CUP players and a top quality Development Academy player in Michael Fink.

Generally when you play a lower to mid-level DI team you are competing against more athletes because the DI school's pool of players are larger. I can tell as a DIII coach that there is very good quality within the top DIII teams. Most of the top teams, Summit, SHS, Mariemont, CHCA, even Reading have 4 - 5 premier level players on the team. Those players would start on any of the top DI programs.

CSC, thanks for your input. I actually mean that sincerely.

As I stated, I am not familiar with SHS players specifically so perhaps they are an exception. Also, my comparison was not to mid level D1 schools and "lower". It was to mid level D1 schools and "higher". Although the season will tell, I believe Princeton falls into the range of mid level and higher.

Something I did not mention in my earlier post is that I would also consider what a large school has to bring off the bench as compared to a small school. If a small school can put 11 high end players on the field, can they also put 14? How about 16? What does a small school do when the injury bug bites? I think there is a grain of truth in the saying that a team is only as good as its weakest member.

I believe that quality big school soccer programs do not have as much of a problem with depth on the bench. There are a couple of these schools that have the problem of how they are going to retain the seasoned, quality players that get a JV assignment because the school has too many high end players.

I still also believe that all of us, at times, sells short the efforts of the opposing school by insinuating that the outcome of a match was entirely because one team did not play well. I have been around that block waaaaay too many times to know that with very few exceptions, the opposing team was the likely cause of that disarray.

Sure there are exceptions and perhaps SHS is one of those. But if I were a "betting man," I would take a mid to high level D1 team over a high level DIII team any day of the week. As a "betting man" I only need to be right more often than I am wrong.

Good luck in your season.

Okay, cincysoccercoach, while I agree with there being plenty of quality in D-3, I'm wondering if you were at the game or just sticking up for D-3 in general. To say Seven Hills had more quality than us on the field is a great overstatement. Since when does 1 OE kid (Fink), who loses the ball more than any other acadamy player I've ever played against (Lavigne, Weddle, Patterson) make SH a better overall team? And then you say they have several CUP players, but how many are upper-classmen that can actually control a game? Yeah, the answer is one, and I play with him. Who are all of these premier level players you are referring to, please give some names. I'm assuming you weren't at the game because while SH may not have played their best, neither did we. Nowhere close. Did you see their goal? It was a complete joke. So don't go lauding SH over Princeton without seeing the game.

Princeton I was there for about the first 35 minutes and saw the 1st goal by Princeton. Since I coach several of the premier players on my team and I am involved with a premier club I know the amount of players within each high school team in DIII. I talk to my players to make sure we are aware of each team's players and capabilities but I don't know names. You are correct that some are underclassmen but that is irrelevant to me because the leading scorer in the city last year was a DIII sophomore. Now I know your going to say that his competition wasn't as good but their schedule was one of the strongest DIII schedules in the state. And scoring 35 goals is impressive against that schedule. This player was also invited to participate on a Developmental Academy team in Columbus.

My point is to defend the caliber of top DIII teams against all the other divisions. There is good quality at our level and some of our best teams can compete with DI teams.

First off, Mike had a bad game, he lost the ball way more than he had all season and he wasn't getting as much support. The play in the last 10 seconds summed up his game: He had a open header in the box for the tie, which he would score 80% of the time, and he hit it over the bar.

Secondly, SHS has 3 CUP players who are upperclassmen(2 juniors and a senior) and 1 who is an underclassmen(soph). All 3 upperclassmen CUP players had very below par games.

Dude, you are only fooling yourself. As Thunderflames mentions: "maybe that's why they were off their game." Princeton does not have the numbers that one would think. With that said I think Princeton does have 7 players that play at a high level. Bottom line - shoulda woulda coulda - they lost 2 -1. Peace!

Pretty even match with Mason getting a few more opportunities. Boro GK played well and #20 Ward had a strong 2nd half, eventually getting the game winner late from about 18 out on a nice feed to the outside of the left back. Shot beat the GK low to the back stick. Good match to watch.

One has to wonder with the game Taylor was having why the choice was made to take him out and ruin his shutout. Chad, you are smarter than that, so could it be that the goalie trainer made this change? Either way it was a careless move and these are the types of choices that will keep ff out of it.

What exactly happens in this situation does the game restart or resume where it was when it was called? Watched the game as well. Two glaring things stood out. Mason has to hit frame when they have wide open opportunities or this is going to be a long year in the GMC for them.

Second, Princeton's goalie was a beast. Great game. Saved a shot in the first half that was one of the few really good strikes Mason had by coming out on Eifert. He got a hand on it and saved a goal. He was really solid.

Princeton had about four or five good opportunities to Mason's dozen or so. Well played game though I agree from both sides except finishing by Mason. Bad refs though. Missed a lot of calls both sides.

Very even game back and forth. Indian Hill scored the 2nd goal with 6 minutes left in the game and the 3rd with 2 seconds to go on an open net. Goalie was caught out trying to keep the ball forward. The first goals by both teams were quality goals. Score in no way reflects how close the game was.

This is as an unbiased observer at this match....

Mason controlled the first half, but was gifted a pk with about 7 minutes left and Patterson scored. Then West was correctly given a pk with about 2 minutes left in the first half and Bowling converted.

The second half seemed to favor West in the beginning, but Mason was far and away the superior team tonight, and were rewarded for their dominance with an absolute blast by Patterson from about 25 yards out with 2:30 left in the game to win it. The West keeper didn't even move. All in all it was a great GMC contest and Mason is still top in GMC standings.

Mariemont 3, Finneytown 2
The Warriors won a tough game at Finneytown Tuesday night. Mitchell White scored twice for Mariemont.

Things got a little chippy in the second half; by my count, seven yellow cards were doled out. All in the 2nd half. Near the end of the first half, a Finneytown player took down Lee Rogers with a pretty nasty sliding tackle from the rear, which was inexplicably not called. Horrible job by the refs. I guess they were trying to make up for that in the 2nd half and keep the game in hand.

You should read the game summary in the CHL thread to get another perspective of how this match played out. To address the "pretty nasty sliding tackle from the rear on Lee Rogers" that was not called.........it was not called because it was actually a clean tackle. Watch the game back on Waycross and you will see for yourself, I promise. 7 cards were dealt (maybe more total in the game) with 2 going to Finneytown I believe and 1 finally going to the Mariemont coach.

You can watch replays until the cows come home, it was still a hard sliding tackle from behind, blindsiding Rogers, who went down like he'd been shot. That's not a "clean tackle," it's a reckless, dangerous play and there is no place for it in scholastic soccer. The rule is clear on this:

A player must be shown a Red Card and sent off if:
serious foul play (includes any use of excessive force or brutality against an opponent when challenging for the ball. Examples include a dangerous slide tackle from behind, or an "over the top tackle" in which a player raises his foot so the cleats could hit a player, or a two footed tackle that takes down the opponent. FIFA has broadened this definition by saying that "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play. For current rules visit www.fifa.com, Laws of the Game. The above quote is from Questions and Answers, Additional Instructions for Referees). The rules now include "Decision 4", which says: "A tackle, which endangers the safety of an opponent, must be sanctioned as serious foul play".

I can only assume when you say it was a "clean tackle" you mean, the defender got some ball. The rule as I read it above does not CARE if he got some ball. The "ball" caveat only applies to a tackle from in front. The player with the ball needs to have a chance to protect himself. Rogers had no chance, he was mugged. It is only sheer luck he didn't have that right leg planted or his knee would look like Swiss cheese right now.

The officials need to enforce the rules for the players' protection. They failed to do so, and spent the rest of the game trying to keep it from getting out of hand as a result.

Furthermore, Mariemont dominated the game throughout. They controlled most of the midfield play, got to many more loose balls, and took better care of the ball when they had it. Finneytown, to their credit, rallied for short stretches a couple of times, but it was clear to me they were outmatched. Not badly... Finneytown has some really good players. Rakoczy, Gaines, Seibert. Kalemera's hustle energizes them. Steinnecker was the better keeper in this game. But it's hard to hide weak spots at this level, and Finneytown has more of them than Mariemont does, based on what I saw last night.

BTW I'm not a fan of either team, I just like good soccer and it was in the area.

I have to agree with x-daddy. A tackle from behind is a tackle from behind, regardless of intent or if "they get ball."

On a side note, I feel people confuse intent on fouls. Fouls are part of the game and intent should not be in the equation. If a player means well, but is reckless, he should still be held liable for his actions.

acmilan13
09-24-08, 02:47 PM
It is subjective and we will agree to disagree, however I don't believe that this tackle was from behind. If the rules are going to be followed to the letter of the law, then my point would be made that Mariemont should have received 2 red cards then correct? One for the striker (Rakoczy) taken down going to goal as the last defender pulled him down. The rule clearly states a red card should be given for this infraction. Also, with the excerpt that you pulled above, Mitch White (intent or no intent) should have been issued one for going into the keeper studs up and cutting his face. Am I not correct? Since you are a neutral observer I would expect you to agree with me on this at least.

Game tape would prove missed calls, which I certainly know are part of the game. Please don't question my credibility.

Finneytown was outmatched & Mariemont DOMINATED the game throughout??? Interesting take. Maybe you need to watch the game on replay just so you can re-evaluate that assessment.

I would love to hear Summit's opinion (if they were there) if Mariemont dominated the game. Or Ross' or any of the other coaches/players who may have been there.

Yea what happened in the Milford-Turpin game? I remember last year Milford had a double digit amount of shots in the first half, but only about two were on frame because the Turpin defense harassed them and hardly let them get a good shot off. Was that the same thing this time?

backtip
09-24-08, 08:11 PM
Pretty much what I said...Milford dominated the game (they had possession for probably 70% of the game) and I'm guessing they had about 10-12 shots on goal, maybe more. The Turpin goalie made about 4-5 spectacular saves, the other shots went right to him. On the other hand, Turpin had less shots on goal and the Milford keeper played well. Turpin pulled their team back on every Milford possession, but it was really their goalie that kept this score so low. Although the final score was 1-0, it easily could have been 3-0 or 4-0 without that keeper. He was fun to watch.

Was it a clean tackle. Go watch it again, because he tipped the ball and cleaned both legs out from under rogers from behind. If you can say that that is not a foul then you shouldn't be posting anything about soccer because you don't know anything.

Mason looked really sharp offensively with all players healthy as far as I know. Didn't stay for entire game, but Eastham is looking sharp (had injury earlier in season) and Patterson is peaking right now. If they stay this sharp, could be threat to run deep into tournament. East has some really GREAT younger talent. Have an incredible soph class. Look out for them the next two years. They will be really tough in the GMC. They just lack experience and bulk. At times their strikers made deep runs into Mason's defense (actually a lot more offense than Milford had against Mason), but could not finish their opportunities or Koutny had great saves (he had at least three great saves first half).

Yes, this was a good score for Turpin, and IMO it was due to their outstanding keeper. One of the best I've seen this year. Milford out-shot Turpin by at least 2-1 and controlled the game. Turpin pulling back their entire team on every Milford possession (until they were forced to play soccer after Milford scored) to clog the middle also did not hurt them.

I stand by my original assessment of this after watching it over and over again on film, and perhaps you should study it some more before you attempt to call me out and say that my credibility sucks. Since Rogers was whipped around and landed on his backside it looked worse than it was but this was a clean tackle. Have you played the game yourself I wonder?

Watch it again, please. Pause the match at 37 seconds remaining in the half. Then use the cursor keys to review the next frames in slow motion and you will see that I am correct.

I also like how you failed to comment on the other missed calls in the match that we debated before. Each point is valid after having reviewed the game, even the penalty that was called by the ref. Guess what though, the match has been over for nearly 10 days and I am only bringing this up because you have chosen to re-hash it. What's done is done so let it go.

Before you try to call me out on something though you should be sure you are 100% correct, especially when there is video to prove otherwise.

Tied 0-0 at the half. The inevitability that is Tyler Popolin finally led to two goals early in the 2nd, one by Jay Barnes off a rebound and the other by Markus Lackey after a beautiful cross.

Lackey scored the final tally after a nifty fake on the left side, carried to the middle and ripped it lower left.

in my opinion, no one in the state could beat Milford. The dynamic duo of Ryan Grothaus and Ben Jones is killer in the midfield! The only loss we have all year is in a preseason scrimmage vs. Centerville 1-2 off a bad PK call with 10 minutes to go. But i think the milford mason game is quite possible in the 4th round of the tournament!

To say no one can beat Milford is insane. I'm sure you are very enthusiastic about your team, but four or five teams could potentially beat Milford in Cincinnati alone. Sycamore, West, FF, Mason and Walnut Hills and possibly St X would all give Milford difficulty. I think I would favor Sycamore over them right now. On a state stage, Dublin Jerome, Worthington Kilbourne, Beavercreek and many more (St Eds, St Ignatius, etc, etc.) If they get to the final four it would be quite an achievement and fans should take pride in the great season they have had.

I agree, no team is un-beatable. But my take on last night is different. After the Mason-Sycamore game last night, I don't see how either of those teams tied Milford this year. Recall that Sycamore played Milford early in the season when Milford did not have 2 of their starters. I thought Turpin and Walnut Hills played at least as well, if not better than both Mason and Sycamore did last night. Milford will likely play Turpin in state.

...anyone have info on how west tied middletown 1-1??

Middletown outplayed them. They actually led for the majority of the game even with a missed PK. West tied it in the final 10 minutes.

Sycamore - 4

Walnut Hills - 2

This might have been the biggest joke of a game I have attended in a while. Walnut's starters played a half, and didn't seem to care while they were in there. Sycamore's started the second half but came out quickly. It seemed like their bench (sycamore) was deeper, as some of the walnut bench players weren't very skilled. Walnut scored on 2 pk's, one given with 19 seconds left in the game. Not a good test for either team. Sycamore seemed to dominate, but hard to tell since Walnut players were not caring. Maybe they will match up again

Walnut starters played until 15 left in the 1st half, came out immediately after the pk that made it 1-1. Disappointed we weren't able to have a real match, hopefully we meet somewhere down the line.

Did Wilmington really beat Goshen 20-0 ? If so, Wilmington should face the same amount of heat Milford received last year. There is no way you can win by 20 without trying to run up the score.

It was 2-0, Wilmington.

I'm happy to get that clarified. The Cincinnati Enquirer website had it 20-1. The print version had the right score.
